I'm planning to major in molecular biology but right now I'm at a junior college to get basics and math out of the way entirely. Right now I'm taking math classes 1 at a time until I've done them all. I'm horrible at math but I'm determined. I will major in this and I will be successful. I just hate that I have to slam through so much math. Where there is a will, there is a way. No excuses.

Just keep persisting and you will get through it. Math might always be something you struggle with, but your math skills will improve over time. As you progress through the Molecular Bio major you won't need calculus, but getting a good understanding of Algebra 2 concepts is pretty important. It will make everything so much easier when you take chemistry, and various labs for your major.

dude the highest math you're going to encounter in your major is calc 2, if that. if you just understand algebra 2 and geometry you should be fine for bio.

The only Math I had to do is Pre Calc and Calc, I’m almost done with Pre Calc and will end up with a A in it, I’m honestly expecting Calc to be Easy too

Here's some words of inspiration from a failure. I am 24 and at a Community College in Santa Monica. My first Semester I had to drop Chem 10 (Remedial 'College' Chemistry) because of a mistake the teacher made leading me to print the incorrect information and making me miss a lab making me drop the course. I had to drop Chem 11 due to me taking a very difficult professor, and his tests were brutal, although, great professor. I retook later and passed. Chemistry 12 comes around and drop due to medical issues that arose making me ANOTHER semester behind, at this time I'm 22. I take it again and pass. My major is Molecular and Cellular Bio and when I was 20, I was failing Genetics/Molecular Biology (2 classes as 1) and ended up dropping because one of the exams was VERY difficult, I retook it the following semester and passed. I passed the Biology 21, 22, and 23 and finished up my General Lower Division classes for Chemistry and Biology. I then had to take Organic Chemistry I and was passing until the Exam 3 which tanked my grade, along with 5 others, leading us all having to drop the class leading to a class of maybe 7 at the end. I have also dropped and failed Calculus THREE times, and need to take it again, as you can see, school is hard for me, but I'm wildly passionate about Biological Science. If you like what you learn enough, you will grind your ass to get the work done, I'm not even graduated yet, but I just got accepted into a Cal State Dominguez Hill for the following semester with the Cellular and Molecular Biology major track, trust, I have been there. @@cardona6615 Heyo, so its going well. Only problem was some credits didn't transfer over and I had to retake Molecular Bio; BIO 220/221 (Molec Bio + Lab) and Principles of Biology III and its lab. Other than that its going well. Currently starting my upper division courses atm taking Plant Physiology, Ecology, and Physics II.

Starting college this fall with a major in biology. I hope to go to med school some day. Hopefully it’ll all go well, and I did fairly well in high school. I’d love any tips if anyone sees this and has some! :)

Densestlemon, don't study alone all the time. Form study groups. You will learn things more efficiently with the massive amount of stuff that you need to do in advance. Attend Supplemental Instruction Sessions or tutoring for difficult classes. Do research to make yourself stand out and don't let your GPA slip. Study to take the MCAT your junior year and retake it again if you need to. At least in nursing the exams are like, "Which of these answers which are all correct is most correct?" Answering correctly can still make you lose points. That can happen sometimes in biology. Learn how to solve problems, make a diagnosis, and remember a lot of things. While you can lookup all the information in your textbooks or online, you can't do that as a medical doctor or your patients will not trust you. So imagine that is why your professors demand that you know so much. Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Anatomy usually scare students. The trick is not to memorize. It is to memorize and understand. Keep in mind that you are competing against so many people in your country from better schools (with more scientific resources/instruments) with at least a 3.5 GPA for medical school. So figure out how to get aces and experience. Have fun too!

Nice 👌I also took AP classes and currently taking AP; Psychology, English Literature, Macro Economics, Government. It's actually not bad as some people think it too be. One just needs to keep track of time and pace themselves. Also, respect to you for being involved in a sport, I'm not in one myself but I assume it can get hectic at times with practices and studying/homework. Overall, keep it up!

Ecology and environmental biology sounds fun. As cool as cadavers are, I can't imagine the smell, and it gets a little boring after a while. It'll also probably keep me away from chemistry and the temptation to make things explode for fun.

Hey I'm in the same boat as you, I'm currently a Biomedical Engineering major and just started my second year. I finished calc 1, and just started my engineering classes including calc 2. And man did I hate it. I'm very nervous about what major to choose but my idea so far is to get a MS in Biology and concentrate on Microbiology. The money from engineering is nice but at the same time it's very intensive and I'm personally not very great at math in comparison to other students in my class. Did you ever make the choice to pursue Biology?

I'm a physician board certified in Family Medicine practicing for 15 years. Completed undergraduate w/ BS in Biology. Glad I did. Felt very much at home taking basic science courses in my first 2 years of medical school. I'd like to offer the following unsolicited advise for those of you aspiring to become an MD/DO. Think VERY hard before applying your AP credit from highschool. Medical school is an extremely competitive process. Why forgo a slam dunk "A" in a 4 credit class which will boost your GPA??? This was my biggest mistake during undergrad and I still look back thinking how I wished someone had told me to do otherwise!

I want to start a major in marine biology but where I live is far from the ocean. Myself has a love for animals, especially marine animals and I want to save the ocean from the people that are destroying the ocean and killing all the sea life. If you ask me, I wouldn’t major in bio until I was 100% sure that I would go to dental/medical school. Even then, you don’t have to major in bio to go to schools like this. A lot of dental/bio schools will typically accept any major as long as you have their pre requisite courses, which is bio, general chemistry 1 and 2, organic chemistry 1 and 2, ( organic chemistry is incredibly difficult and drives a lot of pre health students crazy!) 1 course of physics, English writing and (usually not required) math. Biology, believe it or not, is actually an overrated degree as there’s not much you can do with it after college so it’s kind of useless. The main reason why health field students major in bio is because it has the course work for med/ dental school. If you realize that dental school or med school is not for you, you’ll be stuck with a practically worthless degree. And there are other medical careers that do not involve as much sacrifice like a physician assistant, nurse practitioner, radiation therapist etc., so look into those. You do want to major in something that can land you a job right out of college if you can, but no pressure on you, you’re the student. Also, keep on researching on your own, because I am a stranger on the internet. Hope this helps!

Robert A thanks man. I chose to switch my major to psych and although I know it’s a worthless degree, I plan on going for PT school with it as I found out that’s a common major for PT. Plus it’s nowhere near as hard as bio lol

Jango Fett no problem man. If you are absolutely sure that being a PT is for you, that’s great; it’s a good profession. I would also consider minoring in something practical like maybe business or something that is very employable as a bachelors degree. Electronics is a subfield of electrical. Electrical engineering encompasses electronics, controls, signals, electromagnetism, embedded systems, and more. Electronics is much more specific. And yes that could lead you to a job in computer hardware.

After getting braces, I've always stuck with becoming an orthodontist. I want a good job that makes me happy and successful. I have to start applying for universities in a week and it just hit me that it's going to be rough. I don't think I have what it takes to become an orthodontist. I'm an average high school student who struggles with my courses and I had planned to do a major in biology. I don't know if university is the smart choice for me. I'm afraid to waste my time and money at university. My mind's been all over the place and it's so stressful!! Should I consider going to college and maybe even pursuing becoming a dental hygienist? Having interests is a common thing yet I struggle with it. I don't know what I'm passionate about! I don't know what I'm gonna do after high school. Someone give me advice please!!!!

Hi Jasmine, omg i feel the same way. i’ve been stuck deciding between nursing and biology and it’s driving me insane. i had a therapy session last night with my psychologist and he gave me the best advice. what makes you happy? Take that into consideration and apply it to you in let’s say 10 years from now. However you imagine your life it will be, your routine, day to day activities, anything will help you decide. For example, for me, i ended up deciding for biology last night. I was so afraid that i wouldn’t make any money and as i didn’t grow up with a lot, that became an important part of my decision. yet, my psychologist told me: do you rather see your kids or your future family see you with so much money yet unhappy and stressed, or make a little less money by doing something you truly enjoy. i’m applying to school this year too and i know that whatever i decide will be tough but that’s just how life is, we can’t always go the easy route because it doesn’t mean that it will be the one we enjoy the most. i really hope this helps you in some way and i hope you find the career your most passionate about. it’s okay not to have a plan, and remember that it’s only pre grad and most people sometimes don’t even end up using their career as a job, but just as a back up. good luck and best of wishes to you 🥰

i plan on majoring in biology with a marine bio focus but all the videos on youtube are people doing a pre-med track 😅

I'm about to graduate high school in a few months. Here's my complete college plan for no reason other than to make me less stressed out: I am going to continue working as an evs tech (basically a janitor) at my local hospital through my first two years of college because the pay is very good, and it has a lot of good connections increasing my chances to get a new position as I advance my education. (I was able to get a job in evs at my local hospital while still in high school because of my volunteering in the ED, and getting recommendations, of which I am very fortunate for) Assuming I survive my first two years as a biology major (survive meaning I don't somehow drop out of college or change my major which I am extremely afraid of) , I want to get a lab tech certification and work in the lab at the hospital I work at. Or maybe if I decide to take a different route I'll apply to a med transcriptionist or scribe program. Or maybe I want to get certified as a pharmtech! I don't know honestly and I'm so scared that I wont even make it through the first YEAR. All I know is that I will work in healthcare. If it turns out that I cannot handle what it takes to be a 4 year undergraduate student, I will go to my local technical college and get into one of their health certification programs. (Which I am sure at the very least my grades and past experience and volunteering will make me competitive for). That is only my backup plan of course. Do I have what it takes to be a successful premed student? Only how well I do in college will tell. At this point I've done all I could in hs to prepare me for the classes I want to take freshman year. Typing this out really puts my life in perspective. I know that no one will probably ever read this, but on the off chance someone is, know that you aren't alone.

I read it, you will be fine you have more planned out than me, I really wanna do evolutionary biology and ecology but the job market sucks...oh well I guess Ill do it anyway cause thats always what I wanted to do ever since 1st grade. PS: don't be too hard on yourself you'll be fine

I know I'm really late but I just waned to ask because I am not too sure... how would you be able to obtain a certification as a lab tech, pharm tech or become a med transcriptionist? Don't they at the bare minimum require associate degrees? You would be enrolled in a 4 year school and a year school at the same time... that seems impossible I'm really sorry if this is a dumb question but I am at a crossroads in my life right now where I don't really know what I am doing. I am a second year biology major at a community college and will be transferring to a 4 year school in the Spring of 2020. Because biology is just so broad, I feel overwhelmed and don't know what I want to do in the long run.

Maybe you can do Marine Forensic Science or major in either Marine Biology and minor in Forensics? Always do your research and good luck on your future endeavors! ✨

you probably won’t enjoy a lot of the classes you’ll have to take up to becoming a doctor, especially the prerequisites. i would just recommend looking into specific school’s course track, and what classes you’ll be required to take and see if those sound interesting to you :)

At least in my country we can't :") wish i knew this earlier before i pursued my degree but here i am already graduated with biological sciences major and get denied any time i applied for health science school or work place (although mostly due to government scholarship since we dont usually pay for our tuition fees)
