In both cases people are speculating about the extent of the future applicability of the underlying value, and are just being too optimistic, but the actual value is clearly non-zero, just not "THAT high". In the case of crypto, the main value comes from 1) Immutable trustless contracts (no other way to do them, useful in some cases) 2) More stable and uncontrolled currency in authoritarian states or hyperinflation states (it's less stable right now than USD, but much more stable than Venezuelan or Turkish currency for example... and gets more stable in the future), and 3) Countries that use USD as a reserve currency get effectively robbed by the US when the US prints money and doesn't spend any on them. Even with high volatility, crypto is a more reliable bet than this for those countries than USD is when printing goes heavy.
