Red imported fire ants (solenopsis invicta) are native to South America and an invasive species in the United States. One of the adaptations that makes them so hardy is that they can build large structures by linking their bodies together. This is how they form rafts that can float during floods. When they're aggregated together, fire ants can be seen as a material and the Hu lab at Georgia Tech has been testing that material for years.

If you are curious this is for scanning electron microscopy. It’s standard operating procedure to sputter coat the thing you want to analyze with gold. Look up “sputter coating” if you want to see how it works, it’s really cool!

I was fascinated and a little disturbed at the same time. When I was in high school my English teacher showed us an old 50-ish animal horror movie titled "Them!" It's a movie about how some ants exposed to radiation grew to ginormous sizes, made a colony of hundreds more ginormous ants, and the colony spread out across the country attacking everybody. That movie stuck with me for the rest of my life.

Important to note, The reason they can do this is because Aunt don’t have individuality or personality like humans and other animals, The ants or essentially just drones which is why they don’t have much if any infighting unlike humans and other animals, comparing them to humans would be an unfair comparison since human mind more resemble other mammals like creatures such as wolves or lions (which these creatures do sometimes fight each other for the sake of securing territory for their packs or pride) Also while they have peace with humans have intelligence to realize and discover things these animals will never even see

So interesting. When i was little i used to play with fire ants. I did an experiment submerging them in water vs black ants... ti my surprise the fire ants survived while the black ants drowned (or appeared to drown). Never forgot that ever since cause it fascinated me so much.

@@user-yd2ft7kb3c it is because of the how the sting feel, it is like a fireish hot pain and you get like white bums on your hands for weeks that are really itchy, they got a 2/4 on the schmidt pain index which is relatively high. Anyway they are named after the venom solenopsis that they insert when they sting you. Which gives you the hot pain and can be deadly if you are allergic. I got em as pets, they are really awesome but painful😅
