Even in his old lore his life is nothing but the blade, I think they are making him more emotional about that, given the fact that he named his knife "Katarina", he wants to remind himself of that, of his pride, he wants to be nothing more than the blade, a perfect weapon. At least that's how I see his story

Honestly I actually would like if Talon having ocd were to become canon. Cus no matter how much of a perfect weapon he wants yo become he is still a human and sometimes humans are born with mental disorders. It would be really cool seeing him kind of having an identity crisis, because one one side he wants to be this edgy, emotionless weapon, but on the other hand no matter how hard he tries he just can't help but give in to his obsession of everything going exactly how he thinks it should because he wants to be the "best". But because he wants to kill every target perfectly this will keep making him fail missions so he won't be the best. THIS IS THE BEST PARADOX EVER!

My anime instincts say that Talon felt like he didn't deserve the kill because during his combat with her, Katarina was matching Talon in strengths but her wounds kept her at a disadvantage. So maybe he grew respect for Kat, since not only she was able to dodge his first lethal strike but also she continued to fight with such ferocity to almost kill him.

Katarina failed her mission due to pride and arrogance. He was sent to kill her, waited for the perfect moment to cut her down in a single strike and he fails because of his pride and arrogance. He assumed he only needed that one moment, not to mention he made three critical mistakes before she made one, even if she didnt capitalize on it or even see them. He didn't feel he deserved to win and she earned his respect like her father had before her. I assume that's why he let them both walk away, they both failed their mission for the same reason.

Yeah, when you think of it at first, sparing Katarina after failing the first strike doesn't sound rational but so does him not claiming his freedom when his master went missing. I think he has a certain sense of honour and respect for people that don't fall to him and I also think he sees the child in Katarina that he was when he survived through the streets, hence why not only he spared her but named the knife after her

i agree, its strange and part of his character is not being prideful, not having a name, staying in the shadows honor is not something talon should care about. Yet he thought he didnt deserve the kill, very out of character he is betraying du cotou which is even more out of character

The more one trusts in his skills, the more humiliating to fail Talon's own pride is the reason he let Katarina live

The reason he didnt kill Kat is a similar reason why he joined General Du Corteau. By all means Kat should have been dead, but there she was. And he let the opening pass by him for a similar reason he says " _after my failed strike, i would not try a second_ " in that paragraph which to me indicates that while it was an opening, she's proven that the perfect plan isnt perfect. Katarina is dangerous af no matter what mental state she is in (though since this is told from his perspective, im sure that wasnt her actual mental state) If he f*cked up again, he'd be dead.

@Necrit As to why talon didn't killed Katarina the first time was far more complicated than just having an OCD. You see they are both assassins, and after failing with his first strike their blades clashed and on this moment Talon got a sense of what is happening with Katarina. It is those small gestures conveyed in combat that Talon understood that him and Katarina are no different from each other. The author tried to simplify these through the phrase, "He didn't feel like he deserve the kill in that moment". On a narrative writing this was the perfect phrase but not all people would see what meaning lies beyond those words.
