I saw them four months earlier in Barcelona: they played three tunes in 10 minutes for the photographers. as soon as they were gone the started High Head Blues, played it as in the record and just when the song would have finished they began a 20 min jam that raised the roof... even with the technical imperfections that now I can see (but couldn't then) they'll always be in the top few for me

@d.a.thorndike87725 жыл бұрын
I always love that about Chris. He has never changed in all these years. He's not going to compromise the music for nothing. I admire him so much for that! I'm so sick of hearing Hard To Handle and She Talk To Angels that i am glad they weren't playing them alot live- even though they were the big hits. I am one that really digs the deep album cuts, so when they pull out gems like P25 London I am in heaven. Plus, it is so cool to hear them play Ballad Of Urgency and Wiser Time back to back in the proper sequencing as they were meant to be heard. That is pretty darn cool as well.
@kiekko6734 жыл бұрын
Sterling Music I agree...IF they get to play for 2 hours. Saw them like one week after this gig, another festival, and just like right here, they only had like 45 minutes, and they played 2 covers, and a similar jam like right here...only 1 song from Amorica, and that’s my favorite fucking record!!!
@ChadHuskey4 жыл бұрын
@@kiekko673 Totally agree. I love to hear them jam as much as anyone, when it's a whole gig. For a 45 minute set in front of a huge crowd it seems self indulgent. I wouldn't want to hear Hard to Handle or She Talks To Angles, but if I went to a festival looking forward to hearing the Black Crowes I'd want them to get as many songs in 45-50 min as possible. A couple of weeks ago I read Gorman's memoir about the band and this gig fits what he was talking about. Starting during this time period Chris got into the Grateful Dead and was trying to force the Black Crowes to become like them. The BC could jam as well as any band out there, but they were also a GREAT rock and roll band. Watching footage from 92-94 they were a lot different of a live band. They were on fire! It's amazing to watch. I agree with you, Amorica is my favorite record as well!! Also I'm not saying this is a bad performance. I've watched this version of Ballad into Wiser times A LOT! But I get to do so via KZfaq and then watch whatever else of theirs I want to next. I didn't have to go to a huge festival for a few days to not get to hear the songs I'd have wanted to hear from the Black Crowes ;) I think the 2005 version of the band may have been the best of both worlds. They had regained some of that fire and were playing lots of great material. And they also had some AMAZING jams. The Freak N Roll CD/DVD is still one of my favorites by them. Unfortunately it just seems they could never maintain their peak. Too much drugs, booze, and ego. All these rumors of a 2020 reunion have me bracing to be let down. Gorman 99% won't be involved and who knows who else will be in the band. HOPEFULLY Marc and Sven will be. Especially since they are already playing with Rich in Magpie Salute. But knowing Chris he won't want them in the band because they would be on Rich's "side". It would be awesome if all those guys could check their egos and just go out and be great again as THE Black Crowes.
@kiekko6734 жыл бұрын
Chad Huskey Totally agree. Read the Gorman’s book right away, when it came out. That period with Luther was fucking great. I heard some rumors, that Rich had some kinda falling out with Marc Ford, and that The Magpie Salute is finished. Fucking shame if it’s true, it was a great band. In the end I think that both Robinson brothers have huge egos, and want to be the leaders of whatever band they are playing in, just like Gorman wrote. Another thing might be, that Ford just didn’t want to tour that much, but spend more time with his family instead, while the Robinsons seem to wanna be on the road all the time. While Marc had a solo career, he was just playing gigs every now and then, and was living pretty easy going life. Touring is fucking ruff, especially when you’re not young anymore, plus people are different... Anyway, the reunion of the BC is just about the money, which kinda turns me off, even though I don’t know who’s gonna be in it. I wouldn’t surprised though, if it’s in the end going to be Gorman, Sven etc. I doubt however, that Marc is in. Luther got tired also in the end, and they had to call Jackie Greene, so it might be him. who knows, it won’t last long anyway. I remember them playing Hard to Handle, Sister Luck plus 2 covers and a long jam, Thorn in my pride, Remedy, and only one song from Amorica like I said, luckily that was High head blues which was the opener. They should have thought about the audience more, especially when they knew, that they only had 45 mins, PLUS that was in Finland, where they almost never came to play (that was their last gig ever in there, and the last chance for many fans to see the band, but they just didn’t give a fuck... Well, peace to you, brother! ✌️

Nothing but love for the Crowes here. But still....Chris' Dead infatuation hurt them. They were at their best when they were a bad-ass, bluesy, soulful hard rock band. They sabotaged themselves - i.e. Chris sabotaged them commercially - by insisting on being the hippy jam band that they really weren't.
@afmartin27344 жыл бұрын
Nah. They showed they could do it all. American Records was going under. That's what sank them. American wasn't going to spend money on a band they weren't going to have. No one could touch that band in the 90s, musically, anyway. You're talking about a band that raised the bar in l like 18 months transitioning from some awkward shit hair metal and whatever else, with a pinch of Grunge thrown in, where they grew under the radar. This lineup was completely in another stratosphere in terms of stretching out. They were like Traffic, but heavier.

@Divataster🛐 I'm still with the initial post - I like the jams, but Robinson's total 180 on the Grateful Dead lead to him dropping all of that crazy, manic energy he had as a frontman. How he went from being so anti-hippy to embracing it was disappointing but not surprising. And I'm sure drugs had a lot to do with his suddenly liking their music. It's just my opinion but it would take me a LOT of drugs to enjoy... hell, even tolerate The Grateful Dead.
