In 2022 the U.S. Army will choose a new aircraft to replace its Reagan-era UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter. Two contenders from Sikorsky-Boeing and Bell will battle it out to become the winner of the Service’s Future Long-Range Assault Aircraft program and the Army’s next combat helo when it deploys in 2030.
The Defiant X will square off against the Bell V-280 Valor for the FLRAA contract in 2022, with Army aviation units receiving their first aircraft by 2030.

Interesting note about the tilt rotor; the MV22 replaced the CH46 medium lift when I worked on it (basically a baby Chinook). It's a great aircraft, but a downside I remember is that it can't land in as small of a confined space. It can't be armed as heavily either. I don't think it would make much sense to replace the relatively small UH60 with a bigger aircraft which may not be able to have the same mission capability. This reason, in addition to the Defiant being able to share commonality with the Raider X, is why I believe it would make more sense and probably be chosen.

As an engineer, I love seeing this stuff. I did work in defense for a good part of my career. As a taxpayer, I wonder if replacing the Black Hawk and Apache is a good idea given that defense continues to be the largest part of the discretionary federal budget and US spends more on defense than ~10 of the biggest countries combined. A good part of Defense spending sounds like corporate welfare to me. I mean look at what was spent in Afghanistan and look at how fast the Taliban took over.
@PlutozReal
@PlutozReal 2 жыл бұрын
Well when you think about how fast the taliban took over you need to consider the fact that we didn't control as much land as the media led us to believe. We'd been reducing our forces for several years and every time we reduced, the taliban regained ground. They mostly stayed out of the major cities but they were there just waiting outside. When we finally pulled out they didn't have to retake the entire country because they already owned most of it. They just moved into the last few cities. And when the Afghan government tucked tail and ran it was over.
@SuperKillroy1

@@PlutozReal , I agree that the military did not have as much control as public thought. This was really costly for a lot of people and I don't know why the US did not get out of Afghanistan earlier. The military also was responsible for a lot of civilian casualties. Some of this is just coming to light now and the New York Times and the Daily podcast have done a good job at holding the military accountable with investigative journalism with rights under the freedom of information act.

Low ground support helicopters like the blackhawk are utterly useless in a conventional warfare doctrine against an enemy who's well equipped and trained. RPG's weren't so accurate and their shooters had poor experience, but have a TD section fire it's Karl Gustav on a blackhawk and it's going down. Like nothing screams more "useless spending" than this kind of helicopters. Atleast attack helo require guided, heat seeking missile or AA batteries to take down and is much more agile.

Valor has too big of a footprint. In a carrier, space is at a premium. And when talking about jungle insertions, space is again at a premium. Landing Valor in the jungle needs one big ass clearing. Keeping helicopters airworthy is really expensive, even just sitting there not being flown a helicopter's airworthiness declines much more quickly than other vehicles because of how they operate. The problem with the Blackhawk is that it has always been a "make-do" helicopter, there have been some extremely impressive variants over the years, but it was always the minimum viable choice, that and the thing crashes a lot. That may speak more to the fact that they're an overworked asset of the U.S military and there's only so far you can push that platform before newer technology must replace it for a greater margin of safety and performance. We're now entering an era where all modern military hardware is going to start looking really weird and sci-fi'esque, it no longer looks in the way we would picture military hardware, that is having coarse features and being ruggedly designed.

@@cookiesupervisor2211 by that logic, the Defiant and Raider are suped up versions of the Cheyenne so they are likely more vulnerable. With the quality of the applicants, I think that you could acquire all 4 models, I believe that they are different enough to accomplish the Army's goal. The Defiant is a much better Blackhawk and an amazing insertion platform, but the Valor is much faster and much longer range. The Invictus is great scout helicopter, the Raider is a splendid attack helicopter. They are all excellent designs. Bell has the advantage in FLRAA, Sikorskey has the advantage in FARA.

Is a scout helicopter still needed in the drone era?
@Rowrin
@Rowrin 2 жыл бұрын
Maintenance is the big issue. For every hour of flight time there are several hours of maintenance. Trying to maintain 4 different model helicopters from different companies with different parts is going to be a logistics issue in terms of training (both flight and maintenance crews), parts supply and manufacturing and increase maintenance costs. Imo, this is potentially where the Defiant X and Raider X could win out. Does the Valor really do anything significantly better than the current production Ospreys? To me is seems more of a horizontal upgrade, one that isn't a real generational change that warrants the cost of replacement. Tilt rotor craft also have a must larger footprint which affects how and where they can be deployed, especially in today's urban conflicts. Just this year a black-hawk had to make an emergency landing in a roadway in Romania with little collateral damage (a few street lamps knocked over). There just isn't the same space for a tilt-rotor attempting the same landing. Defiant X and Raider X looks like they would simplify production, maintenance and training while also accomplishing their intended roles and fitting within the same operational scopes as their predecessors.

@slashd ever since Iran hacked into and stole a US spy drone, having a control point closer to the action is critical. Also if the war goes into megacities, or if satellites are targeted then you want to still be able to deliver ordinance.
@generalrendar7290
@generalrendar7290 2 жыл бұрын
@Rowrin well the Army doesn't use the Osprey, the Marines, Navy, and Airforce do. You also have to think about the next battle spaces at near-peer level. The Western Pacific and Eastern Europe. Maintenance is one factor in a sea of other logistics situations. FOB, operational footprint, combat capability, and range. The valor is a more compact, smoother flying, less Maintenance heavy transport. The Valor is far superior in my mind in the Pacific Theater whereas they are almost evenly matched in the Eastern European theater. Which is why I suggested having all 4 and completely replace the Apache and Blackhawk, and Kiowa. The Valor is a superior medivac, while I'd give the Defiant the edge in insertion.
@Jeremy-jw6nn
@Jeremy-jw6nn 2 жыл бұрын
@@generalrendar7290 The biggest advantages to the defiant that make me lean a little more towards it is the size, and lower maintenance costs. Also with already having the Osprey it wouldn't be far fetched to simply modify it and make an Army version. They're talking about all the branches using the Armies helicopters, might as well just ask for more ospreys for the Army and take the Defiant.

Contractors KNOW they can screw the taxpayers because the Military always pays for the over runs, no questions asked. Have you EVER heard of the military saying, "OK< cancel the contact then if you can't produce them for amount signed at CONTRACT". NOPE, they pay and pay and pay, look at the F-35. What a money pit that plane is. ALWAYS need more and more and more. Like if after you got you new car and they say, "Hey, send us another 10 grand because the car you ordered is going to cost more" and you would pay it.

Sometimes you don't always need a stepchange in performance. You just need new airframes with 0 hours on them, and where possible, simplified maintenance.

I think it really depends on performance. If the newer aircraft are significantly better at the roles they're being used for, and increase in cost is worth it. Besides, the older craft are cheap now because the designs are so old. Sure, a new vehicle can't match the cost per unit of a vehicle nearing end of service, but if you compare the overall cost per vehicle across the entire lifetime of the design, it could tell a very different story. Especially when you take into account the better performance of the newer vehicles. The US military is not nearly as dominant technologically as it was even 10 years ago, you can't keep sticking with decades old designs if you want to stay ahead.

there's a design flaw with helicopters like the huey and blackhawk, they require a tail rotor on the back to give them stability, they learned the hard way back in the 90's (black hawk down incident in somalia) that if the tail rotor is destroyed, you lose control on the helicopter.. the better design was that of the russian helicopter using coaxial twin rotor which eliminated the need for a tail rotor.. this design is incorporated in the new defiant heli, with an additional push prop for more speed, so basically this is progress.. i still remember back in that day, the 90's it was morning and i was about to go to school, cnn announced the death of 11 soldiers in somalia with the blackhawks crashing down etc... if the US can get a better helicopter than the blackhawk can offer, then its progress... no need to stay stagnant, the flaws of the blackhawk were evident on that somali incident

Well I think personally that our power is just a physical manifestation of our blessings from God. Along with our beautiful landscapes, our geography, our accomplishments like no other on earth Ever! We have been given alot. The Bible says from whom much is given much is expected. And we have given more than any other country on earth by far far. And I know we make mistakes but the United States remains blessed through all that because Jesus loves God's children no matter if they screw up. Really, why the United States has achieved so much in every way. Why, because of God. We have never lost a war, Ever! Yet, it is not because of the number of our horses or chariots, but because of God. The United States is known as The Wings of the Eagle in the Bible. We have many believers here. The Bible says "Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord." That is Jesus my friend. God bless!

Or, and here's a wild thought, the army looks to smaller manufacturers, who, similarly to the jet industry, use computer models to cheaply create blueprints and then outsource the manufacture to others. Thus, the wild chokehold monopoly of current manufacturers is reduced, even if a tiny bit.

I used to work for Textron. The US government could probably cut costs by 50% if they broke up the development into smaller groups e.g. mid sized engineering firm designing the unit (let the government give requirements (e.g range, lift requirements, speed) but not the specs (e.g. x heat limits on fuel pump - their specs were often incorrect), small business in charge of gathering quotes, large construction group in charge of assembly with the original engineering firm in charge of quality control. The truth though is the politicians want the overspending as it somehow shows their concern for their consituents even though a huge percentage of that spending just goes to the top execs.
