18:18 they are forgetting their more and more the longer they are dead. That’s why the baseball guy (can’t remember his name) got abducted could remember a lot but not his name. When Robin spoke to him he could remember everything because he most recently died. The one kid could remember where they put the combo to the lock but not at all what it was or her name cuz she had been dead for longer than both of those 2. Honestly I thought it was pretty clever and consistent

Sadly short stories usually don’t make very good feature myth films. The Netflix movie “In the tall grass” was also a Joe Hill short story (very, very short) and I liked the movie but they basically took the idea of the short story and made it into a movie. It is VASTLY different. I read the story as well.

My biggest issue was this: it was heavily implied that the sister has psychic abilities, like her mother may have. So when Finn was hearing the dead boys, seeing the dead boys and moving bottles and stuff, I thought "oh okay, so Finn has psychic abilities as well". But then I was like "well how does The Grabber even just hear the phone ring?" But then I wrote that off as maybe it was actually ringing in real life because of static or whatever dumb excuse, but Finn was the only one that could hear/see/ interact with the dead boys. BUT THEN when Finn is killing The Grabber...the Grabber can freaking hear the dead boys on the phone!!! Like what? So is Finn not psychic at all and the dead boys are just plain ol ghosts that can make themselves heard or seen to anyone whenever they want? That's so dumb, like why even setup the storyline at all of their family having psychic abilities? In the end, the sister's visions did not help Finn in any single way. And if the ghosts could appear to anyone, then again, there is no need for any kind of psychic power element in this movie. Also, I thought that maybe The Grabber was punished down in that basement when he was a boy by his parent or something. Because he said something like "yea that phone used to ring all the time when I was down here too but it doesn't actually work". So I thought maybe he used to be abused down there and now he was repeating the cycle. I don't know though because so many things in this movie didn't add up. Even though I did enjoy the movie overall, it did really irritate me that there were SO many unanswered questions, loose ends and nonsensical decisions

Ok cause i just watched it i will say all the plotholes because i am fucking disappointed. Naughty boy game? None . The killer was in the basement at some point? Why didnt explore. Why couldnt the kid see the dead children but saw one that had his back broken for no reason showing him the telephone that didnt ring and still had someone on the line? Why did they explore the bsckstories of the dead kids when none had an interesting backstory. One beat up kids ok whats the point. The other one gave newspapers. Ok? Whats the point. the girld had powers that proved useless? They helped at nothing. There was no game. Why is the boy smart? He was always told what to fucking do.such a stupid movie

@elenarodriguez7809

I kind of agree but not completely. It wasn't great but it wasn't terrible. From my understanding Finn like his sister does have an ability. His sister gets future visions and he can see and hear dead people but because of his lack of understanding the dead kids have to use the phone as a conduit. Also the Grabber also has the same abilities as Finn. Its the Grabber's childhood home and when he was a kid he was abused and locked down there. So the dead kids know the Grabber has this ability which is why they want revenge on him and go crazy at the end yelling at him. The Grabber denies his supernatural gift because it will make him feel guilty, which is why he says he sometimes hears the black phone

Linoleum tiles don't go directly onto dirt. To shift that much soil would take days by hand. A toilet lid would shatter the moment you hit it against a concrete wall. You can't thread a cable up a 9ft carpet roll. You can't be deeply asleep sat up on a chair with no arms. A reactive dog wouldn't wait for you to get to the final combination then decide to bark. A child cannot snap a grown man's neck with a phone wire.

That much soil wouldn't take long to move if you have nothing at all to do. I believe the wall was made of gyprock, which could easily be smashed by a toilet tank cover. A person can fall asleep anywhere if they have not slept for days ( I personally have) The cable is very hard and course and would easily fit up the carpet, think of a drain snake.

Glad you were honest about it. I didn't likeit either and waited so long to watch it. However, I think it has potential to get a prequel. Why not? Maybe the short story is the problem. I would still believe, the script's dialogues and changes from the original are contributing though. I watched it in German which made it more difficult to watch the actors play their emotions. It came off stiff.

I thought that the film thrives off the unknown. The movie builds a lot on what it meant to be in the 1970s in the midst of the technological advancement and mental health advocacy that’s easily accessible in our era with 2010/2020 optics. The child’s doll house and religious sentiments, watching films such as the referential 1974 Texas Chainsaw Massacre (which was common than the film stays on the big screen for a few years because there wasn’t the invention of home video yet), the bullying and and hardcore fighting, being oblivious to peoples sensibilities and welfare, socioeconomic disparities, and the hammered depressed Father was common in the 1960s/1970s/1980s. No one got through untouched. Berating and beating children just what it was back then. I enjoy how the director didn’t try to sensor the reality of what things were back then. But then a lot was left to to imagination, just how films used to be made. It is what it is. I think that the mood of the film was built on how much we didn’t know about the grabber’s story, while the film spent a great deal of the time with the progression and character development of many of the supporting antagonist. I understand people thought the film was too mid, but for what it was worth, I strongly think it was a solid film 4/5.

The movie wasn't bad, BUT I feel like they wasted the concept of "The Grabber." Ethan Hawke did such a great job of making that character terrifying & yet they chose to under utilize him. Don't know if this was because they kept the film at a PG-13 rating OR if they just wanted to appeal to teenage audiences. If they'd bumped the rating to "R" & really went for it with Ethan Hawke, I think we would have had a very different movie.

I am sadly very very logical and literal (it might be my autism idk) so while there is things I can overlook, all the things you listed sound like they’d irk me wayy too much. For example the children not really helping, because how did Coraline give you a brilliant example of how that can be done and you have such a scary aspect of voices on the phone and you ruin it by showing them, making them not helpful at all AND basically just throwing together a lot of other horror movies. It definitely has a promising premise and wayy more potential and great visuals but yeah one thing I can’t stand is if things just don’t make sense at all, even in fictional standards if you understand what I’m trying to say?? I think there should have been a lot more build up before he was taken to the basement. Particuarly the relationship between Fin and his "friend" needed a lot more flushing out. I didn't feel anything for these kids who were taken because you only got two minutes with them before they were gone. I haven't read the book but according to someone who did, in the book the brother of the killer shows up as an unexpected guest and that's what causes the killer to leave Fin alone and creates some time (although not days) for him to escape. That makes a lot more sense rather than this game of "naughty boy" he was playing.

I really appreciated the film left a lot of things unanswered. We knew only as much as Finney which I thought really worked in adding intrigue and mystery

Thank you 😫!!! This movie was dry dry dry. You guys reminded me how much I didn’t like this movie. My EXACT thoughts watching this. It was very disappointing. The people I watched it with loved it I was like did we just watch the same movie?!?! I mean it was bad lol. I’m so glad I didn’t pay to watch it. People were exclaiming how good the kid acting was but I’m sorry even that was mediocre. And Nick I have the same issues with Sinister and the way the spirits show up. That movie goes from horrifying to bland in an instant. This was actually painful to watch 😂 You guys are so on point with your reviews 🙌😎

At 5:11 :) No wonder there's many similarities, in many items/reference - like *bullies and balloons*, pointing to Stephen King! I never checked origins of a story to a movie. Surprised myself that I have seen my 1st ever horror movie - Salem's Lot (1976) and Cujo, The Mist and a few more. So, yeah, found both your opinions here easy to agree with on many points. If possible will watch it just once.:)

I really appreciate this honest review. The short story is worth a read. I liked it. If you guys like reading ghost stories, Stephen King has a great one called Later that came out a year or two ago. It’s going to be made into a movie soon too.

The idea of it was extremely good.. The execution and delivery wasn't the best. But overall a good picture. I like the subtle connection of the son ALSO having abilities like the mother and sister as well

So Stephen King's son ineptly ripped off his dad's style and gets it made into a movie? Quintessential Hollywood. 😂

As for the black balloons I guess everyone had black balloons back then in the 70's because how did the cops not find the one person that actually owns and uses black balloons. haha

Just watched this and thought I was going crazy for thinking this movie was completely predictable and unoriginal! I kept hearing how much it made at the box office and figured it must be amazing and I’m missing out if I don’t watch it! The entire movie I kept waiting for a twist or something unexpected but it played out like every other movie that came before it! Yours is my favorite review so far because your not afraid to be honest and I agree completely!

I just saw the Black Phone and Elvis. I love horror movies but I liked Elvis a lot more then the Black Phone lol. I agree with you this movie was a miss for me. I did not understand towards the end of movie the Grabber lost his mask and stop attacking the kid. When the Grabber, was outside he did not have mask on all the time. I thought that part was lazy writing.

I realize this is a tad off topic. But you guys should know what it is like working at the front desk of a hotel sometime. Because talk about constant and annoying phone ringing. Then half of the time no one even answers! Perhaps there are spirits calling such as with the phone in this movie.

Nice review y’all. I’m glad you were honest. It’s both over- and underwritten, unsatisfying, and scattered. It’s just a bunch of ideas with no webbing pulling it together. I actually thought the child acting was pretty decent and Hawke was good, but it was wasted. At this point, I’m under the impression that I don’t like Scott Derickson’s filmmaking and I’m not sure what everyone else is loving about it.
