The Bleeping Multimeter Project

9 ай бұрынI've demonstrated many times how continuity and diode test mode should work on every multimeter. We want a continuous bleep on a short, and a quick bleep on a diode junction. That way you don't need to look at the multimeter screen while probing around a PCB unless you want to see the actual voltage drop across the semiconductor junction. Simple yes? So why do only a very few multimeters work this way? I have no idea but let's see how we can make our own bleeping diode tester from any cheap multimeter

Richard .. Question ... Why don't you use the internal bleeper of that meter ? there should be no need to use that external one if i am not mistaken .

Suggestion for the standalone version i see the output to a volt meter ... well why not get a led or lcd display and use that... then you can have it all in one housing and you got a full testing device and no multimeter needed the little device does it all a SDO (short/diode/open) tester so yeah make it a fully standalone with builtin voltmeter guys that would be soooooooooooooo much better and i am sure you guy will figure that out !!!! .

What happens when you measure voltage with the modified meter? Is there any protection against misuse? Did you provide any input protection for the standalone version?

I suspect 100V or so would produce a very long bleep, not necessarily from the buzzer, ho, ho

Yes, must have skipped that. The best place to connect the integrated version would be at the input pins of the ADC chip, so the uC would be protected from all odds. Most probably the signal would only be in the 100’s mV range so it would be necessary to figure out whether the uCs ADC was sufficient. An external reference might help mitigating that issue. The way it is designed now makes the multimeter useless for any measurement exceeding the supply voltage. The stand-alone version should definitely have an input protection with at least a Zener diode and a series resistor in case a powered circuit is probed or a capacitor still holds some charge.

Rather than connecting the chip directly to the probe connection, wouldn't it be better to find the point on the pcb which is connected when the dial is on the diode setting. I'm not sure how much protection that would give when in diode mode but it would certainly give protection when other modes are selected. Edit: And 20 seconds further into the video you made my point.

Excellent! A really informative and educational video, that is achievable for the beginner, but also produces an meter that would be beneficial to any tool kit, also educational on the software front, so a win win win.

Great idea but if implemented like now will make shock hazard when somebody connects this to mains 230V.

It's not a shock hazard it will just be destroyed. Mention is in the video - get a cheapo multimeter and use it only as a continuitly/diode tester. Anyway who (in the right mind) tests continuitly/diode mode on a live circuit??

Don't like modifying meters ! Just put it in a box . If you must make it a external add-in / plug-in for the DMM so you have the meter reading . Don’t poo poo strip board ! It’s fast , low cost & acceptable for most small one off projects . Just don’t push it past about 20 MHz .

Can someone help me with my uni-t 139e error. the multitester reads the probes are short connected even though the probes are not touching. I have tried to analyze the board, but unfortunately I got lost, because I don't understand how the multimeter circuit system works. Or at least someone knows where I can find someone who talks about this problem?...

Gents, I admire your efforts but the lack of protection on the multimeter inputs is in my opinion a show stopper. To be successful the meter characteristics (including input impedance) must remain unchanged except perhaps a slightly shorter battery life due to the power requirements to provide theadditional functionality which should be acceptable to most. I believe you need step back to think this through and write a proper functional specification of what you are trying to achieve.

This is intended as something you can put in an 'el cheapo' multimeter and use it specifically for this purpose. Use a DIL socket for the ATtiny and if you accidentally blow it up by testing for continuity on a device that is still powered, then just fit another chip. They are really inexpensive... one could even say 'cheap as chips' LOL. There are no doubt ways to improve on our work so far. Hey, we can all discuss this on the next live stream of The Electronics Channel (28th August 17:00 GMT time) and maybe between a lot of heads we can make this into perfect mod to fit on almost any multimeter. Why not join us?

Of all 16 personality types, INTPs and INTJs are the powerhouses of problem solving. Put these two types working together and they can solve pretty much anything they set their minds to. I think we have such a pairing here. Both types have dominant cognitive functions in thinking and intuition. Introverted thinking and extroverted intuition for INTPs and introverted intuition and extroverted thinking for INTJs. For example: Einstein was a INTP and Newton and Tesla were INTJs. Wouldn't this circuit be destroyed if you use your modified multimeter to test for high voltages? A stand-alone version seems to make a lot more sense to me.

@@LearnElectronicsRepairYes, my point was that it is better to have stand-alone gadget for specific tasks with known limitations in mind, and still have a safe, fully working universal multimeter on the bench. I see very little benefit in modifying multimeters, at least in unsafe wqys that will severely limit its practical use. An oscilloscope can easily kill you, but multimeters are generally extremely safe and fool-proof. I have to admit I quit watching after seeing the attempt to connect a small microcontroller directly to the probe lead plugs and the proposed method of testing floating voltages. This one was just not for me. Love your other videos.

Having silkscreen printing on the pads will not work, it pretends correct soldering. Some text elements overlap with part bodies and will not be readable after component’s assembly. Something to improve…

Hi Richard and Detlef! Nice project nice simple coding. A question if I may, If this is stand alone and you plug it into the meter when needed I do not foresee any issues..... However, if this is built in and and becomes part of the meter, because this is on the voltage terminals how will you compensate for higher voltage readings so that the ATtiny is not damaged? I would defo go for an add on to my multimeter rather than doing a "baked in" just because of this reason, if I did mis this please point me in the right direction, though I know an AT tiny can do no more than 5V dc on the ADC pins, more than that and the chip will die... I know one can say add a resistive divider but. this loads the existing meter input and also it changes the input readings... Will be watching this one as this is defo something I will use, thanks to both of you for your efforts....

Where's the Github ? (the Code for the MCU ?) I would like to see it... and maybe contribute... and why can't you use the lil buzzer that's already on the PCB ?? or will that have feedback ? Also how can we add some diodes & caps to restrict flow and smooth out ? I see you also have 2 more pins available that could do stuff (PB0 & PB2)... when you guys finalize and post all this.. please post all the different versions... the meter one.. with & without protection & smoothing... the standalone.. with and without protection & smoothing... Also for the standalone you could use like a 1602 LCD.. small & easy to use.. female banana plug jacks... the ultimate repair shop tool !

I just want my bleeping (🤬) diode check to beep like my fluke. I’ve spent a lot of money looking for this feature, and failed. I really like the eevblog meter with its 15v diode feature but no damn beep. Only reason why I just don’t want buy fluke is because of the huge price for cheap parts that are not sold cheap.

@@akierum I have this meter, yea it has diode blip, but in diode mode when shorted it still produces short blip, but not a continues bleep, this is the exact feature Richard is after.

It would be helpful if your schematic is drawn conventially, not with each component scattered and pins not labelled!

Too much pedantry here so let me make my contribution 😂. Don't let the grammar police intimidate you Dutch. I'm vintage Uk and have always used "spelled" as opposed to it's alternative, "spelt" and it is perfectly acceptable and correct. In the USA I understand that "spelled" is the normal form of the word but in the UK both are correct @blooze5479 😂

@@stanecauldable It is kinda funny to read "IsInRage" though, maybe rage for not having this proper standard in the first place. Basic testing has been going on for decades now, so we should be way past implementing things that are basically useful being included in the first place.
