The problem is your pastor doesn't know any of this. They preach the same old same old, the Bible colleges and seminaries teach the same old message devoid of critical content and they actively discourage critical thinking or reading outside of a very narrow band. I discovered the Epic of Gilgamesh and it accelerated my journey towards atheism because I understood I'd been lied to by well-meaning but ignorant paastors and teachers. I even wrote a book on Genesis 1-11 to help myself understand not just the what, but the why. Took two years and it was fun. This was a great episode. Thank you.

Absolutely a powerhouse of an interview. I studied koine Greek in college for a year and was able to do translation work. But what Dr. MacDonald Is talking about regarding Homeric Greek is nearly A new language to have to learn, and most academics already have full plates. It literally requires someone like Dennis McDonald to have specialized in what seems like an extremely niche line of antiquated History to be able to tease out how the logic and heuristic ways of thinking of the people of that era would have influenced the development of some oral stories about a Jewish apocalyptic, messianic rebel. I mean seriously, is it any wonder why the story of Jesus as told by the Greek born Hellenized Jewish authors of the Gospels would have caught on with people in the Greco Roman world?

You are spot on. I read Dr Mac’s book and after digesting it it’s clear that 99 percent of religious scholars are not going to take the time to read the Greek Epics and then see the correlations in the Gospels, nor are they going to even listen to Dr Mac, Miller, Carrier, and others. It’s actually quite sad.

The good doctors talked about the very thing I have thought about. People like my brother, a retired pastor, would find it next to impossible to admit they were wrong about the reality of god, the multiple errors in the Bible and the manmade aspect of the entire mythology. His former career, reputation and ver identity hinge in god being real! Not to mention the pride factor. Makes me wonder how many pastors don’t actually believe it is true but, once they based their whole lives on that one thing they are basically unqualified for any other career. What can they do? I once heard Billy Graham didn’t believe god was real as far back as the 1970s but, his entire empire hinged on god being real so he was stuck with it. Intellectual integrity should override the pride and fear of starting over but, it doesn’t always.

Well said ... as long as the scholars using the classics are doing it responsibly. Dennis and Richard, here, are trustworthy, scholars with integrity. On the other hand, a completely invalid method to use which can only yield utterly fabricated results, is to isolate single words from the NT written in Koine Greek, consult the LSJ, cherry pick an irrelevant connotation from a Classical work that suits an existing confirmation bias and then force it back into the Koine text.

@@kariannecrysler640 Hi. Thank you for replying with what I judge is authentic concern - just as mine is for all of you who don't understand what he's doing. I can assure you that it's not the subject material that is prejudicing any judgements I'm making. I think those texts he finds are wonderful - I have learned so much from his knowledge of the Classics and those obscure texts. I have no criticism of him as a Classicist. That's his field and he excels in it - and in teaching Greek. (But my polite pushbacks and questioning in M&L were not welcome in his echo chamber so he booted me.) But he is not an exegete. There are logical rules of good methodology for valid interpretations of a passage - and he breaks them all! What he is producing by his invalid methodology cannot possibly be "truth" but rather, his own fantastical fabrication. His is another fairytale on the other end of the spectrum. Jesus was neither God nor the monster he's been made out to be. I thoroughly reject both fairy tales about the historical Jesus from the standpoint of a textual critic and experienced exegete who knows the rules of judging the reliability and applicability of sources and for handling texts with integrity in order to get somewhere closer to a "true" reading. His isn't. I have fond memories of my former interactions with several of you and also wish you would wake up. In fact, I recently tried to alert two individuals who share another server with me to the invalidity of his New Satanic Version of Mk 14:51-52. Neither of them actually engaged with and processed my information, but very usefully repeated several untruths that have been propagated about me. Not surprised that that was the tactic used to discredit and ignore my scholarly objections. They would have done well to have paid better attention and had their eyes opened.

@@alirowan1999 agreed on the information being low brow discredited. I could care less about what image Jesus gets from the texts. I think they are all valid, in that we have no reason to trust anything written is about a genuine person. It’s all written to tell the stories the writers wanted to establish, not genuine facts about a person. I believe the more creative ways to interpret the text do less harm than theology alone has done to genuine scholarship without biases. I don’t give anyone a higher status based on their stances. I use intellect, work ethics, out of the box thinking, etc (merits of character) but I don’t use what I see as superficial information in my assessments. I will never tell anyone to just believe something because a scholar has had a go at it. To be honest, Jesus’s character is a close simulation of other prophetic organizations of the times written. It’s specific to that culture, but it did not exist without outside influences. Denying that is a lie. I personally think that looking at the texts with any ideas of genuine information about the supernatural is folly, that includes theological ideologies. Everyone gets the same respect in their research from me, if they are not boxing themselves in by assumptions. See you and I are not that different lol. That’s why I like you 😁

I think institutional inertia is a big part of it. But I also think there's a personal component. A lot of modern scholars who otherwise do good work are also blind to their deficiencies in this area. A lot of said scholars tend to be former believers and, from what I have observed in interviews, reading, etc., I think there may be a tendency to defend their past selves to an extent. Sort of an ego thing where the absurdity of their past beliefs becomes somewhat galling. And so a defense is built up over time to excuse the erroneous nature of the beliefs by assuming that there was at least some rational basis for holding them. The idea that there was no rational basis, that they were simply too ignorant to even notice the purely literary elements of their beliefs becomes somewhat offensive. That and I think a lot of these people have basically no experience with actually making art. Certainly not in any kind of sustained way, not in a way that engages with a community of artists. MacDonald is completely correct about the the kinds of dynamics that arise in such communities and NT scholars who can't recognize how this impacts the way the gospels were written are necessarily operating with an incomplete picture of the social process underpinning these texts.

I have the impression that the author of Mark was merely a mercenary, a professional writer composing stories in exchange for money for various kinds of clients in Rome, among them a group of a Jewish sect called Christians. Now, with the impressive work of Dennis and Richard, the hunch that Mark was just a hired professional writer is almost a certainty.
@sciptick
@sciptick 2 ай бұрын
'Mark' is the overwhelmingly most innovative of all NT writers, creating from whole cloth the human character Jesus traipsing around Palestine in historical context, saying Paul's opinions, and acting out mythic acts prefigured, and taken as prescribed, in LXX and Homer. Most likely 'Mark' believed, like Paul, in sky-Jesus, but found the earthly Jesus filled pews better, and thought the misapprehension could be corrected after initiation. Correction turned out to be superfluous, in the end, and was quickly abandoned. The degree of creativity on display is wholly incompatible with hired ghostwriting.
@TheJacrespo
@TheJacrespo 2 ай бұрын
@@sciptick why not? From ancient times until the precontemporary age, and across various fields of artwork, hiring anonymous authors was the norm. This was precisely because skillful individuals, like the author of Mark, were a ridiculously tiny minority at that time. On the other hand,even in more recent times, examples such as J.S. Bach and W.A. Mozart, wh composed universal masterpieces despite being hired , illustrate that different norm. The concept of art as something more than artisan work is very recent in history, emerging mainly in the 19th century.

If Tabor gets added to this panel then it would imitate Zeus, Hades, and Poseidon. After all the superb content he's been publishing, I'd love to hear his take on Homeric Mimesis. And man, that first question from MacDonald, holy cow, that was a doozy! Great question though. I just finished Virgil's Aeneid and can't help but think Mark's abrupt ending was in imitation of Virgil's similar abrupt ending and that Mark thus intended to do with his Gospel what Virgil did with the Aeneid and wrote an origin story of Christianity. And then Matthew & Luke said, "Hold my beer" and wrote their gospels to correct and one-up Mark. Miller makes a great point that if Mark was sufficient, they could have just re-copied Mark and distributed that but instead, the authors of Matthew & Luke felt the need to modify Mark to correct him in some places, to elaborate on him in others, and to emphasize different parts.

I've seen some otherwise intelligent people be very dismissive of MacDonald's work. While I don't agree with every aspect of it, his placement of these authors within a creative community and what that entails is incontrovertible in my view. The only way to arrive at MacDonald being wrong here is through ignorance of the creative process and of creative communities. In effect, denying these aspects of the authors dehumanizes them. It's a really bizarre tendency in my view. You'd expect it from christian scholars to some extent but you get this from secular people too.

I kinda feel like dr jorjanis philosophy applies to this dialogue. His platonic view of the noble lie is profound. People are either goats or sheep. So there has to be TWO psychological explanations as to why people do things. Ine for those who take and one for those who are complacent.
@DoctorBiobrain
@DoctorBiobrain 2 ай бұрын
First off, I think you missed the point: They’re not saying the Gospels are lies, they’re saying the Gospels are historical fiction that was meant to tell a message, not be literal history. He specifically said Mark and Luke weren’t meant to be historical and wouldn’t have been understood as historical back in the day. That’s just a mistake later people made. Movies that are “based on a true story” are also historical fiction that use real events as the basis for inspirational stories. And no, people aren’t one dimensional. Most people are both “goats” and “sheep” in different situations. In fact, conmen typically use greed as a tool to trick people by making them think they’ll be rewarded if they listen to the con artist. And we see that in religion, like how Prosperity Gospel teaches that if people give money to their church they’ll get even more money in return. So both the “goats” and “sheep” have the same motivation: Money. And a preacher might get a car salesman to give him money, but the next day that salesman might trick the preacher into overpaying for a car. The idea that we’re either takers or suckers is provably false. Moreover, you’re completely missing a third group: Smart people who act morally because they know it benefits them more in the long run than acting immorally. Takers are short-sighted and almost always end up sad and alone because they burned everyone who trusted them. I don’t know who Jorjani is but if he teaches that people are either takers or suckers then it’s because he’s probably a taker who doesn’t know why immortality is counterproductive and shouldn’t be teaching philosophy.
@MuktiArno
@MuktiArno 2 ай бұрын
@DoctorBiobrain uh... I totally got that. Jorjani says the same thing but with a different dimention. To propagate a noble lie. Seems you just want to be oppositional without comprehension. Lol
@DoctorBiobrain
@DoctorBiobrain 2 ай бұрын
@@MuktiArno I understood your point. You didn’t understand mine or you’d know I disagree with you. The Noble Lie is a well intentioned lie that needs to be believed for it to work. And that’s its greatest flaw because so much effort needs to go into maintaining the lie. Like people who believe America was a perfect nation founded by God, so they attack anyone who wants to tell real history or fix our problems because they’re afraid America will collapse if we know that America is imperfect. But as I’m sure you understand, fiction isn’t lies because you’re not supposed to believe it’s true. The point is to inspire and entertain, not trick people. You can be inspired by Star Wars without thinking it’s a true story. Historical fiction is about using real people/events to pull people into the story, not to tell a history lesson. When James Cameron made Titanic and Mel Gibson made Braveheart, they weren’t lying; they were using true events to create stories that were more inspirational and entertaining than the real stories. And every biopic Hollywood churns out is full of fiction in order to make inspirational stories even more inspirational. People in ancient times did the same, even adding magic into their historical fiction just to juice it up. That’s why we have four different gospels. It’d have been easy for them to rewrite the gospels to match one another, but early church leaders just wanted to collect the four best Jesus stories, not tell a history lesson or create a Noble Lie. Most of Jesus’s message is good even if he’s entirely fictional. Now people believe the lie that all four gospels are eyewitness testimony with no contradictions. Once they’re exposed to the truth it puts them on the path to atheism, since it makes them doubt everything else they were told about the Bible. Again, that’s the main problem with the Noble Lie: You have to keep the lie going forever. And more importantly, I showed why your moral system is obviously wrong. We’re not divided between “goats” and “sheep”, that’s just something takers believe to rationalize their selfishness. Most people are both takers and suckers at various times and some of us are neither takers or suckers. And honest question, have you actually studied philosophy or is Jorjani your main source? Because if any of my philosophy professors had said this kind of stuff I’d have dropped their class. He’s not teaching philosophy, he’s rationalizing immorality.

Would love to see all those "criterion" analysis (embarrassment, dissimilarity; multiple attestation; cultural and historical congruency), which surprise, surprise, "show" that ALL the stories in the bible are true - and apply them to Homer's works. Would be interesting to show apologists these can be used to "prove" each and every story to which they are applied. (On the other hand, one can simply take any biblical story these "filters" indicate are real, and merely change out the names. Like taking a biography of Washington, use every textual analysis to demonstrate its veracity, and then rewrite it with Lincoln's cohorts' names. Bet you didn't know Lincoln chopped down a cherry tree and threw a silver dollar across the Potomac!)

Seems that people miss the obvious. Most try to spiritualize faiths, rather than realize reality. Jesus taught observation of reality - not discerning spirituality. It has never been spirit versus flesh - it's about observable reality of the difference between good and evil. God said it is about observing His teachings to do them - and Jesus taught likewise. Most are deluded by spiritualization because of the paganization of Christianity by Paul and his followers. There was no fall of man - God said: "Surely, if you improve yourself, you will be forgiven. Sin is at the door, its desire is towards you, but you can conquer it." (to Cain) Onediscipletoanother Truetogod Most of our Bibles are perversions and full of contradiction against God given facts that are common sense.

Interesting discussion as usual. One problem that I find with these scholars, Pastors and other member’s of the clergy, Christians, Atheists. Derek and MythVision is not being open to the possibility that God does or does not exist. Only being open to one view allows for complete Confirmation Bias and GroupThink. In fairness, I consider myself a Philosophic Christian, acknowledging the multiple mistakes made in the writings by accident or intent. My academic and faith journey through Quantum Physics, the existence of an Infinite Metaverse or not, String Theory, the texts, their historical influences, and non-Canonical sources all combine with my actual life experience. I see the same Bias for their opinions as I do with many Pastors. I wish your podcast, Derek, would humbly acknowledge the possibility that you nay be mostly wrong. In that light, not being so giddy for deconversion . That is a poor goal for life.

Hi Scalps. You have here two former seminary professors who, through decades of research have concluded that the NT was a set of texts best explained without divine action. I think that is about as fair and “open” as you can get.. that is, having the evidence drive you out of your own worldview and career. As for agnosticism, well, that becomes a kind of confusion from special pleading. No known scholar of ancient religion is agnostic concerning the Incan gods, Apollo, Thor, or Vishnu.. We rightly study such figures as evolving cultural figments, persons of religious mythology. Inviting guests onto Derek’s channel who are confused on such fundamental questions would constitute a wild move away from the secular humanities and into a world of delusion.

*The Book of Revelation and the misinterpretation of scripture* Modern Christians consider the Book of Revelation to be about the end of the world. *This is not the case.* It was written by a Jew who may or may not have been named John, *but definitely not one of Jesus’s disciples, while he was stationed on the Greek island of Patmos.* It is likely that the author was a preacher. *The book is principally about what the author considered to be the end of his world, specifically the fall of Jerusalem to the Romans in AD 70.* At that time 60,000 Roman soldiers stormed Jerusalem, burned down the Temple, and killed countless Jews. *It was end of the world for those Jews who had expected Jesus to return and restore the holy land to God’s chosen people. What happened was the exact opposite of these expectations.* The author was trying to rally the Jews and present his vision that God would return to destroy the Romans and restore the Kingdom of the Jews. *The reference to an anti-Christ is a metaphor for the Roman Emperor, Nero, and the number 666 spells out Nero’s imperial name with the Jewish numerology system. The author did not feel safe at the time to actually spell out Nero’s name.* So, in essence, the Book of Revelation is a lamentation for the disaster at Jerusalem, a call to rally the Jews to a brighter future, and a screed against the ‘demonic’ Romans, the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. *Elaine Pagels, one of the world’s leading biblical scholars did extensive research to untangle the mystical nature of this book.* religion.blogs.cnn.com/2012/03/31/four-big-myths-about-the-book-of-revelation/ Modern Christians have used their misinterpretation of this book, which was one of many similar books but the only one that made it into the Bible, to define a whole host of religious dogma, including the appearance of an Antichrist, the Tribulation, and the Battle of Armageddon, all seen as future apocalyptic events. What this shows is that scripture is widely open to being misused and thus it becomes an unreliable guide to defining reality. The Christian failure to understand the Book of Revelation, its inclusion in the Bible, and the false doctrines that it spawned is solid evidence against the authenticity of Christianity.

And it was hijacked...for the obvious threat it was. The divine will establish a just society on this earth according to those principles and according to that man. The ashes of the phoenix will arise again and "thy kingdom come, thy will be done ..on earth as it is in heaven. I was on a different trajectory from day one. Ok. Let's get started. Take out your textbooks on the crucifixion story as imagery and prophecy. The story may be borrowed but, the content is given a different context. Yahweh judged the heavens themselves and became the Ancient Serpent of Old (snake/ Shining One or Morning Star). Adam, who had a university of trees to learn from, wields the fiery sword as the Lawless One when he judges the Earth. Are they unjust to inflict wrath? Of course not. How else could they judge. They are Transfigured and revealed to be the Ancient One of Days with Christ washing his feet. Earth is Yahweh’s Everlasting Lake of Fire, his furnace of roaring flames where, in his furious wrath, he will gather you up, put you in, and smelt you. If your name is not in the book of life, he will refine you, remove your dross, and purify you until the Devil, the False Prophet, and the Beast are cleansed from you. The crucifixion story is imagery and prophecy for two appearances, the sacrifice and the resurrection. They take place within the same generation, at the end of the ages, the time of the harvest. Warning of the impending Day of the Lord, he was swallowed by the Beast out of the Sea (sacrifice) and spewed out upon the shore as the Beast out of the Earth (resurrection), as the sun beat down upon his head and a burning east wind began the Way of the Lord in the Desert. Adam is a third party to this world and these heavens. Adam ascends beyond the heavens. His domain is forever peaceful. A kingdom was prepared at the foundation of the world. Yahweh's kingdom will be forever peaceful. Adam is the Root and Offspring of Yahweh. Yahweh and Adam have been among you from the beginning. Yahweh goes about in a tent of cloth. Adam was clothed from the nakedness of the day of judgment. David (Yahweh) the Morning Star rides the donkey and the Bride of David rides the foal of the donkey. Save me, I pray, from the hand of my brother Esau! (Gen 32:12 NABO) Esau ran to meet him, embraced him, and flinging himself on his neck, kissed him as he wept. (Gen 33:4 NABO) Jacob was born 'striking at' the heel of Esau. To 'strike at' the head or heel means to protect, watch over, or guard. Isaac blessed Esau saying: Ah, far from the fertile earth shall be your dwelling; far from the dew of the heavens above! (Gen 27:39 NABO) (beyond the heavens) I've decided to put an end to all mortals on earth. The birds of the air and all the great beast will have a great feast. The oceans will be drained and the waters placed above the dome of the sky. No longer will the sun beat down and scorch you. No longer will there be hurricanes and tornados. The waters will refract the rays of light and there will no longer be night. Looking forward, we will all speak the same language. What to you see? A flood story? The Tower of Babel? By all accounts, you should be nothing more than a pillar of salt. Ok. Let's get started. Take out your text books on the crucifixion as imagery and prophecy. Let me know when you are ready. The horse of many colors or, aspects or, perspectives. Verses can be added according to context. White - The wine press I have trodden alone (Isa 63:3 NABO) Red - Do not think that I have come to bring peace (Mat 10:34 NABO) Black - Scales of judgment Pale Green - Christ rising up from the Abyss - all of Hades is at his heel - to strike at heel or head meant to protect, guard, or watch over the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that will produce its fruit. (Mat 21:43 NABO) Do not say… 'Who will go down into the Abyss (nether world)?' (…to bring Christ up from the dead) (Rom 10:7 NABO) We saw his star (of Bethlehem) at its rising (Mat 2:2 NABO) Up from the Abyss (Rev 17:8 NABO) The star was called "Wormwood” (Rev 8:11 NABO) It was given the key for the passage to the Abyss. (Rev 9:1 NABO) I hold the keys to death and the netherworld (Abyss). (Rev 1:18 NABO) Its rider was named Death, and Hades accompanied him. (Rev 6:8 NABO)

@Archons88
@Archons88 2 ай бұрын
@RichardMiller-ym5jc Thank you Dr. Miller. Respectfully, my comment is not necessarily directed at you or Professor McDonald, but the skeptic movement in general, which appears to be more concerned with endless egoic critique regarding factual merits of Christianity instead of exposing WHY it was developed and FOR WHOM belief benefits. The consequent, immediate threat of extinction we face is the result of actions informed by this belief, and the cowardly deference to those 'chosen by G-d' to rule Earth ensures they succeed. The despotic identification of Western Civilization as Esau/Amalek (Milhemet Mitzvah) is the principle reason America's resources and prosperity have been irreversibly drained by Christian leaders who direct trillions in tax revenue towards military conquest and eradication of all nations surrounding Israel, who authorize depopulation/democide of their own citizens by overt and covert means, poisoning the air water food and "medicine" we consume, drawing nations of the West towards mutually assured destruction...all in the name of fulfilling so-called prophecy. The Torah/Mishnah/Gemara and all subsequent, illogical, self-serving rabbinical commentary, are plainly declarations of war masquerading as divine inspiration, with the stated goal of INVERTING CREATION into darkness. Christianity appears to be the theological means by which "Rectification in the Sabbath Millenium" will be achieved and survivors of rapture (i.e. extermination) to be subjected as Noahide slaves (see Public Law 102-268). Ignoring or dismissing this as the fanatical fever dream of a small minority who ironically control the financial and political mechanisms of puppet governments acting in concert is intellectual dishonesty at best. Given the intentionally limited information or scientific means to identify an ethnic origin, the scribes are probably an asiatic tribe who infiltrated and occupied "Edom," adopting the established techniques of usury, sorcery, and barbarism of the Old Religion (ex. human sacrifice noted by Theophrastus) under Babylonian captivity, and later identified as 'Judahites' who plagiarized Berossus, Plato, Aristotle et.al in Alexandria to form the program of theocratic domination and destruction we call scripture. Their despotic ethnostate was established by Rothschild which means Red Shield and Edom means Red. Esau, descendent of Cain the first murderer, was born red and hairy. Thus Kabbalists display their allegiance to Cain with the Scarlet Thread, a symbolic reminder of their hatred of Creation and all its inhabitants. Of course, this post will be discarded as 'racist paranoia' which is not an argument or refutation, but is proof of spiritual bondage that requires no religious identity.
