In his own words and "own own" music, Lightnin' Hopkins reveals the inspiration for his blues. In Les Blank's film (www.lesblank.com) he sings, jives, ponders. He boogies at an outdoor barbeque and a black rodeo, and takes you with him on a homecoming visit to his boyhood home of Centerville, Texas. --Carmen Moore, The Village Voice

I would've given almost anything to be standing there with all 3 playing guitar with them. 3 of the baddest cats to represent the Blues.

I just noticed that. Lightnin is the f'n man. No one better. I really miss Billy Bizor though, you know, Lightnin's cousin who's blowing harp. He was such an undiscovered, underrated, and unappreciated talent. Mance, is just as damn good in his own right as I love Mance Lipscomb. God bless the Texas Blues.

i know, thats another reason i love this clip. lightnin's playing rhythm for a significant portion of the song. i've seen most of the other clips of him performing with others and this is the only case where he ever seems to defer to anybody. he respected his elders!

I love it when Lightnin says "The blues comes so many different ways, It is hard to explain" & also seeing Lightnin' cutting it up with Mance Lipscomb. I had never see that before. Thanks for posting it.

Particularly this part of the film completely misrepresents hopkins. Hopkins did not live in Centreville Texas where this was filmed, He had lived in Houston texas, one of the largest cities in this country since the late 1930s, nearly 30 years, Rather than the image of being a folk performer suggsted here, Hopkins was an electric urban bluesman who was most at home in black city night clubs. He first made commercial records in 1946 and had made hundreds of commercial recordings sold to African Americans before folk blues enthusiasts began to dominate him around 1955 putting acoustic guitars in his hands even though he prefered electrics which he used for almost every recording Hopkins made for Black people. He waqs a great musician I was privileged to meet, but he was not a rural blues man as this film suggests, He is a big contrast with his cousin Mance Lipscomb who remained in the country

Yeah he didn't live there, he was just born there and lived till age of 8. The whole point of the film was to show you where the blues CAME from. the blues didn't start in the city, it started with the songs sung in the cotton fields while working, which is exactly what lightin escaped from by using his music

Thank you for clarifying this. I was confused about the surroundings and thought maybe they shot most of the doc along the outskirts of Houston. Do you know whether it was LH's decision to film in Centerville or Les Blank's? Or both?

Is Lightnin' your uncle? I cannot begin to express in words how much his music has meant to me. i only found out about him a couple years ago. I'm 42 and was never exposed to his incredible music. I actually own more of his CD's than anything else I have. He's touched me in a place i didn't know existed...
