Experience the thrill of angling for large big bluefish, also know as gator blues. Each spring, in the back bays of Long Island, these powerful predators cruise the shallows, perfect for visual targeting.
However, preparation is key; ensure your tackle and gear are primed for the intense battle against 15-17 pound behemoths determined to break free.
Delve into exhilarating footage capturing the excitement of engaging these bluefish with both fly rods and conventional tackle, watch them chase and take down poppers. Witness firsthand the consequences of mishandling these formidable adversaries in this captivating video.
Get ready for an amazing adventure on the water!
Tight lines!

I grew up on Long Island also. Fished every chance I got. Worked @ Captree as a Mate for a while back in the 1970s. Now in SC. Miss those days back on LI. My PB Bluefish was a hair under 22 LBs! A real Bruiser. Taken off a Wreck out of Fire Island Inlet in November.

I am a big fan of the speed, power, and aggression of bluefish. Every spring as the water is warming up in western LIS and stripers have begun getting active, I'm getting excited for those "choppers" to start moving in. I still enjoy catching stripers, but pound for pound, bluefish are easily stronger and faster. In saltwater fishing in the Northeast, there's nothing better than ripping a topwater through a huge bluefish blitz and seeing those choppers slamming the lure over and over before setting the hook and fighting the fish as it does its tarpon-like jumps. I definitely had to subscribe after seeing this.

Great editing on this video. I've never seen someone put so much effort and passion into Blues. Striped Bass sure but blues aren't usually an exciting fish, especially when I use them as bait for larger species off shore. But this got me a little excited and looking forward to blues again. Hi, Bluefish have sharp teeth and will bite trough even heavy fluorocarbon leader. We use wire, metallic wire to avoid loosing flies, lures. Wire leader is rated by lbs (pounds) and we use anything from 15lbs for flies to 30lbs for spinning rods. Good luck!

@@thesearethebreaks2124 for the blues, any cove or are that has shallow water with deeper channels near by will attract these fish. Obviously boat traffic doesn't help so the quieter the better and get there early in the morning.
