The E86 Z4 Coupe is the summation of everything that was good about BMW. A naturally aspirated straight six engine up front, a manual gearbox and rear wheel drive. I definitely think this is one of the forgotten ones and it is such a fantastic package too.
Hope you enjoy the review!

I have mine for four years now, and every time I drive it i fell in love again with this car. Here in Germany we have the priviledge of the autobahn, and the Z4 performs very good on high speed. But I also like to cruise around, its such a versatile car. If I would sell it now I could get the money back I payed 4 years ago wich is really nice, you can park it in the garage and you won´t loose any money. Spare parts and maintance are fair priced as well as the insurance an taxes, both costs me around 600€ (515 Pound) every year. In this price cathegory youb can´t find something similar, the Porsche Cayman costs around 10k more, while the Audi TT feels like a random Hatchback. As long as we are allowed to drive petrol cars, I will keep it. Best greetings from Germany.

Glad to hear you enjoy yours too! I can definitely imagine these cars performing well on the autobahn, need to bring mine over to Germany at some point. That is the beauty of cars like this though, they are generally not depreciating and will only rise in value as time goes on! Thanks for watching 👍

Really enjoyed that review, had mine for 9 years and the enthusiasm you have for it is just how I felt when I got mine. It’s got such a great blend of looks and useable performance. As you say it’s kind of been forgotten which is all the more surprising as EVO and Catchpole rated it as a 5 stars at the time. I put it down to reverse snobbery at the time, as the French hot hatch brigade and Japanese fans really looked down on BMW’s of the time. They were seen as old man cars.

I enjoyed watching that well composed video - thanks. I've had two of them and only sold my last one because I bought an MC, which is similar but maybe an extra 20% everywhere albeit with much higher running costs! The intake noise comes from a Sound Generator from the intake into the cabin. It has a bit of foam at each end that you can cut down or remove for a bit more volume. But they aren't quite as rare as you suggest. From what I've found it looks like the UK got 2,189 Coupes, but only 1,596 were manuals. Still it's good to see them being appreciated!
@FootToPedal
@FootToPedal 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much Iain. Bet the M is a load of fun too! Yeah removing a piece of foam from that pipe has made a huge difference, not sure I'd take both out though because I think it'd be too loud for daily use. Interesting on the production figures though, maybe I've been mislead. I was finding data that showed only 260 ish manual 3.0si Coupes registered and 390 or so including the autos. Unless your figure includes multiple generations of the Z4? Either way still a fairly rare car! Agreed, love the enthusiasm around them!

Nice review. I have a low mileage (33k km, left hand drive) 2006 M Coupe version. Fantastic drivers car. Some of the key differences between these cars are the beefed up suspension, brakes (drilled and ported) and engine. The S54 engine was shared with the E46 M3 puts out 333hp. That 20% increase in power makes a great car even better. I just put on a new set of Michelin Pilot Super Sport's. I was running the original 2006 Continentals (with only 33k km they looked like new but had obviously gotten hard). The new SS's made a huge difference to the handling and the ride. Thanks again.

That's great to hear, I love the S54 and I bet it suits the Z4 Coupe extremely well. I can imagine it being a lot of fun to drive for sure, and quite an occasion to rev out to 8k rpm too! Yeah tyres can make a enormous difference, always a go to option to me. Thanks a lot for watching!

Really excellent review and a complete mirror of my own feelings on the e86. I just got one last week, having driven one first back in 2006 when I worked as a car washer at a BMW dealer for a summer job. One of the things I love about it, and quite similar to the JCW, is that it makes speed limit driving fun. You feel like you’re really driving without blowing through the speed limits. Another way, perhaps less flattering to put it, is that it feels faster than it is. Additionally, with that low down torque you really can enjoy more of the gearbox more often. Really looking forward to further reflections from you. Great cinematography, great editing. Really glad to have found your channel.
@FootToPedal
@FootToPedal 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your kind words Spencer, appreciate you taking the time to write this. I'm also glad you enjoyed the review! I fully agree there though, I think being lower to the ground further exacerbates the feeling of moving at speed, even when you're going at the speed limit or less. It definitely means you can have a lot of fun just on normal roads. Thanks for watching! 👍
@andyrichardson4710
@andyrichardson4710 3 жыл бұрын

Great review. As an owner of a 2004 Z4 E85 (convertible), I absolutely love it and concur with your assessment. It's a perfectly balanced car...plenty of performance, but also very comfortable. I know you love the rigidity of the E86, but after owning a convertible, I really wouldn't want to give up the soft drop top (provides more storage than the hardtop convertible) and after driving both cars given that I don't push it to the absolute limit, I can feel no flex in the chassis as the engine bay is stabilized and well-braced. I drive it to venues with virtually no light pollution with my wife and park and just sit in it looking at the stars. With the top up it's as quiet as my hardtops (seriously), and with the top down there is (literally) no buffeting and noise is remarkably absent. It is a truly brilliant design in both looks and engineering and I can't imagine what I would replace it with (after driving them, no Porsches...too hard-edged for my taste). Classic design, as you mentioned, along with a perfect blend (for me) of comfort and performance. BMW truly produced a hidden gem here.

The BMW Z4 3.0si Coupe with a manual transmission (828 units in North America) is a standout rarity: - **BMW Z8**: Even rarer with 2,543 units in the U.S., underscoring the exclusivity of both models. - **Audi R8 V10 Manual (First Gen)**: The Z4 is rarer in North America among only 828 units. - **Chevrolet Corvette C6 ZR1**: Fewer units compared to the ZR1's 4,684 units, the Z4 Coupe maintains a unique appeal. - **Lotus Exige S (North America)**: With similar limited numbers, the Z4 highlights BMW's exclusivity among only 828 units. - **Dodge Viper (Final Gen)**: The Z4's scarcity outpaces this iconic American sports car's approximately 2,000 units, making it a prized addition for collectors and enthusiasts.

I just bought mine E86 3.0si 2 months ago :) I already had some problems with VANOS and some oilleaks (especially the gaskets from valve cover, Valvetronic, excenter-sensor and oilfilterhousing). But that's normal with N52s in this age... Aside from this it's a really nice car! The design is suberb - I was also thinking about getting an Alfa Romeo GT V6 busso (I already had two GT 1.9 JTDM), Alfa Romeo Gulia or Jaguar F-Type. But I decided to get my first BMW and i think the decision was right. I'm not so satisfied with this "electronical" steering. But this is the only contra. Wish you a good time with you Z4 ;)

Looking to get Michelin PS4's on my Z4, do you recommend going Run-Flat or not? Are the Run-Flats very hard? My old Bridgestone run-flats are horrible.!!
@FootToPedal
@FootToPedal 2 жыл бұрын
I'd personally always recommend non run flats, as from my experience run flats always detract from ride quality and overall handling feel due to the stiffer tyre sidewall. The Z4 already has a stiff ride and I run the non run flat PS4s on mine and they work well!

I am looking at a set of 224 alloys for my E86 Coupe exact same M tyre sizes as you are running here. 225/45/R18 up front and 255/40/R18 on the rear. I have read the forums regarding these wheels with these tyre sizes on the 3.0si with M suspension which mine has. The general consensus is, some rubbing is almost guaranteed, especially on the front, not only that but the higher profile tyres will throw the speedo out also. I really want to know if you are/have experienced ANY of this rubbing on your Z4 running these wheels and tyre sizes?? You have not mentioned this in any of your videos. I really hope you can advise me on this?
@FootToPedal
@FootToPedal Жыл бұрын
You will probably get some rubbing, but for me it is almost never. I noticed on the rear wheels that it only ever rubs when the suspension comes close to full travel, I.e. if I went through a large bump you sometimes get a very slight rub. The fronts are fine 99% of the time, I've noticed a slight rub when the steering is on full lock. So in short, you may find the wheels rub in certain circumstances but it does not impact normal use whatsoever from my experience. The speedo is certainly thrown from stock because rather than overreading, it now appears to be 100% accurate when comparing to GPS for example.
@markskinner5659
@markskinner5659 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply, is the rubbing on the painted lip of the wheel arch wings or is it the wheel arch liner that makes contact? Has the rubbing that you have experienced caused any noticeable wear to the finish on the underside of each wing? Interesting observation about your Speedo now being in line with the GPS now as my GPS would always have some slight deviation from what my Speedo would show on my stock wheels. I assume you have not had any problems with these tyre sizes going through MOT?
@FootToPedal
@FootToPedal Жыл бұрын
Yeah its just on the wheel arch liner so no damage/wear to the actual wing or any painted parts. Yeah I think with a slightly bigger wheel size, for a given speed the wheel would be rotating at a lower RPM. Speedos have to legally over-read so the small difference in size then brings the speedo back down to actual speed. No issues with MOT or anything like that either, it looks and drives totally standard

Just to update on my search for a set of 224 M alloys. I have just acquired a set in really nice condition still currently on the OE Continental Contact Tyres, Fronts 225/45/R18 & rears 255/40/R18 same as your setup. Thank you for all your responses. One other question, I am yet to fit them to my stock 3.0si coupe with its M suspension like yours. Do you know if the rear camber on yours has been adjusted to give negative camber? I ask as looking closely at your videos it looks like your rear wheels are at a non standard angle, and have some negative camber, has this been adjusted because of the lower offset of the rear 224 wheel to make sure it clears the rear fender wing?

Sounds good, yeah at that price you can probably afford to fix cosmetic and mechanical stuff and not be negative into the car. You can probably pick up a used wing fairly cheaply too! As you say, mechanical is the main thing, and the N52 engine is very good if well maintained. Thanks for watching!

Fine review of a very good machine. With the gradual phasing out of combustion engine cars, I think manufacturers in this day and age no longer try all that hard to produce inspiring cars; not at attainable prices anyhow. All the various technologies crammed into cars, with few exceptions, clutter and subtract from the "good old days" driving experience.
@FootToPedal

Thanks a lot! Yeah I would agree with you, there's not much incentive since in the space of a few years they won't be able to produce combustion engined cars at all. It's sad but times are moving on now.

You're joking right 😂 calling it unoriginal is probably the funniest comment I've ever seen. The entire thing is my own culmination of a months worth of driving and note taking. This video took north of 20 hours to produce and is made entirely from scratch. If it looks like I've just "copied" Mat Watson and Richard Hammond (whatever that means because I've never even seen either of them review an E86?) then this is clearly not the channel for you sir.

@Foot to Pedal I also have the M Coupe. Loved your video, very well put together. You describe the 3.0 as more a GT than Sports car, whereas the M is very much SPORTS CAR! The suspension setup is much harder - some say too hard, and it is so for relaxed cruising, but for press on driving it's perfect - M Division know how to setup a car for hard edged handling which it has in spades. No fun around the city! There are other key differences that go to making this car so connected and sharp handling - the hydraulic steering rack from the M3 CSL, the brakes from the CSL, the mechanical M Sport Differential, and the ITBs for razor sharp throttle response and sound (even better with the CSL carbon fibre intake which sadly, I don't have!). It is far more raw and edgy than a 996 C2 Manual I recently sold, both cars having near identical performance figures but very different drives. I wouldn't want to everyday drive an M Coupe - bit I tcan see the 3.0 excelling as one. Definitely change those front tyres, stay with Michelin. I put Michelin Pilot Super Sport on because there were no 18 inch PS4S. I also have the rims from a E90 M3 because the previous owner (a car dealer) took the OEMs off and sold them, putting on some horrible 20inch 5 spoke black ones - I kid you not! They ruined both the look and ride of the car. The E90 rims I think actually suit the car better than the OEM rims anyway :). UK Production numbers: E86 3.0si SE: 297 E86 3.0si SP: 1,906 (SP is Sport I think - don't know differences...) E86 M: 588 Total E86 UK: 2791 I'm in New Zealand, we got 8 Z4 M Coupes, of which mine is one - Interlagos Blue mileage 38,500mi, 62,000kms. Thanks very much Greg! Really interesting to hear your thoughts on the Z4M (I checked out your video and that's a really nice car you have there!), it's very much how I would imagine it to be. As you say it definitely comes across as more of the sports car of the lineup whereas the 3.0si is more of a go between and perhaps more usable all round. I certainly love all the querks of the M though, most of all the amazing S54 of course! Shame about the alloys that were put on yours but looks like you have it all set up nicely now. And thanks for sharing the production numbers, dont suppose you can point me in the direction of the source of these could you? I've been struggling to find much information on it, and only had registration data to go off which sounds like it was incorrect! Sounds like you have a very special car though there, 1 of 8 must be a pretty cool feeling. Hope you continue to enjoy it and thanks for your support! 👍

Nice write up on the M. It is one on my dream cars and I am considering getting one this year and intend to daily it. What makes you feel that it is not a good daily? I had an E85 3.0 roadster for a while (and regret selling), and it seems that the M is just better in every way. It also probably helps that I don't have to commute for work, so it would be a super fun grocery car!

@@austinnafziger4159 just simply that its suspension is tuned strongly for handling and not comfort. Think hard core sports car. They deliberately didn't compromise on that, producing a brilliant press-on drivers car at open road speed. For City use it's uncomfortably hard, but if you are young and can live with that, no reason not to daily one. I have an SUV and an Aston Martin Rapide S for those other duties 😉👍
