It's not true that Bond did not connect with Lucia Sciarra and I think that that character, played by Monica Bellucci, is an important one to understand the evolution of the Bond Girl trope. First of all, there is the age factor: Monica Bellucci played a Bond Girl when she was over 50: she demonstrated that Bond can be erotically attracted to more mature women. Also, she looked like a 'sacrificial lamb' but she did not die and actually gave important information to Bond.

This is one case, where I would have wanted to see her die in the end, because it would have underlined the reach and threat of Spectre. It makes them look inept when Bond can stop her assassination and just calls a CIA contact and she is safe. Apparently she was supposed to be killed, but this was changed probably because death of Severine caused quite a lot of criticism, which I get. It would have been nice if Severine had survived Skyfall and Lucia wouldn't have survived Spectre. Also I kinda wanted Lucia to be Blofeld.

@@eimearc I'd actually like to know why you consider his preference for women between 20-30 to be sexist. If anything it's ageist, and even then it's hard to blame someone for their reproductive instincts. Regardless of what you may believe, it is a biological fact that women are most fertile in their early 20s (the best age for a woman to reproduce with the least risk is somewhere around 23). It is not surprising that men have evolved to select their mates based on fertility, for which youth is a reliable proxy. This means that, for the majority of men, women in their twenties are the most attractive on a primal level. This isn't sexist, or playing dumb, it just is the reality we all live in.

@@christopherbrown5409 Because it was interesting to see the journey of someone supposedly ‘meant’ for this life; her mother, grandmother, & great-aunt were all a part of it, but she initially feels like a failure- then there’s the exploration of her changing friendship with Gaston - the conversation of her awareness of her future role* was very sad & moving. I haven’t read the book, I only saw the movie, so I don’t know how long she was Gaston’s mistress- I always assumed that the movie (given when it was made) might well have glossed over her ‘career’, as it were- except for that conversation*. It was also interesting that they talked about ‘mundane’ things, like what living arrangements would be put up for her- arranging for her to have a care/ driver & the like - I don’t know, while it’s interesting & often fun to show off the glamour of something like this, or make everything about the sex/ exploitation- people forget there’s more nuances to people in this world. While there’s a big gap of time between ‘Dangerous Beauty’ (it’s known as ‘A Destiny of Her Own’ in Australia, & maybe some other places) & ‘Gigi’/ ‘Cheri’, they all have something to say about mistresses, though more specifically those trained as courtesans- ‘Dangerous Beauty’ had some interesting things to say about the contrast between wives & courtesans, & the rights/ freedoms & limitations of both.

Vesper Lynd (and Eva Green by extension) is not only the best, but is also the most important Bond girl, her presence and Bond's love for her informing all of the five Craig era Bond movies. And if you consider Casino Royale as the prequel of the entire Bond canon, Vesper has shaped the man and the hero that Bond has become. :-) The writers of Casino Royale -- Purvis, Wade, and Haggis (I have a feeling Haggis is the one that gave CR its emotional heft) -- and director Martin Campbell deserve a lot of credit for making Vesper a beautiful, powerful and unique combination of the three Bond girl archetypes. And Eva Green's performance elevates the character into someone we really believe Bond could fall in love with. Of course, Daniel Craig gives a nuanced performance too, making us fall in love with Vesper as Bond did. Their chemistry is so strong and sparkling that this insistence in Spectre and No Time to Die that Bond is in love with Lea Seydoux's Madelaine Swann is just that -- pure insistence by the creators. Seydoux is good actor, in other movies. But in the Bond universe, she doesn't quite fly. And if acting is reacting, Craig's is not really reacting to a lot in these two movies. I don't know if it's a language barrier problem (maybe some feelings get lost in Seydoux's delivery of a story that is not in her native tongue), but she and Craig just don't click. Watch their interviews together, and they hardly connect. Craig has more chemistry with Rami Malek, and he displays a real interest in what he has to say. He's even more engaged by Lashana Lynch. Madelaine Swann is both a failure in casting and writing. It's part of the reason why Spectre and No Time to Die do not rise to the level of greatness that Casino Royale achieved -- they do not feel real and emotionally grounded. Quantum of Solace, for all its deficiencies, had that emotional continuity and believability because its seemed Craig and Bond were mourning the loss of Vesper along with the audience. The last two Craig era movies are asking us to believe in something that isn't really there -- a life-altering love for a woman that makes James Bond want to be human.

Why is it always conveyed as “surprising” when the woman matches bond in fighting skills/strategy/intelligence. Whenever a capable woman is introduced, the films’ direction imprints a “yeah, she’s cute AND kickass, a real rarity, bet you didn’t expect it”, and it’s getting OLD.

@@reinhartgregory Actually, getting girls is an average gynophile (woman-lover) accomplishment, especially for straight guys. All kinds of het dudes have girlfriends and wives. "Alpha men" is a biology myth, debunked by the very biologist who coined the term. Human leadership varies culturally, as in other primate groups. Male chauvinism is a conservative political ideology, not an animal instinct, since some animal species and human cultures are female-led. Some men are chauvinists, others are feminists and still, others are neutral. All of these attract women, mostly due to pheromones, social skills, and beauty. The fact that most men of average income and social status date and marry women disproves the "Alpha Male" myth. I also know several feminine guys who are married. They are all vampire kings, lol!😎😁 Whether nice guys get women or not depends on your definition of "nice guy." Sincerely friendly dudes get women by the above means. Incel stalkers do not because they are too shy to express their attraction clearly, approach attached, or incompatible women, act insincerely charming, expect too much of their crush and love life due to narcissism and make hostile remarks and behavior to them. Masculinity is really just body functions such as facial and chest hair (which men called "twinks" or "pretty boys" shave off), rather than violent or risk-taking behavior. Much of Bond's appeal is that he is rich, handsome, British, and an action hero who saves the world often.

clearly biased video towards Craig era since Bond girls have been saving his life for decades (Mayday, Bouvier, Octopussy, WayLin) and his relationship with M was more professional in the Brosnan era with mutual respect; she`s more like his mom with Craig, scolding him and showing up in the field to babysit him constantly cause he`s a loose canon. Bond girls started to be taken more seriously from the Dalton era on - making Bond fall in love with Kara, and combining the femme fatale & heroine in Pam. The Brosnan era went one step further by not only improving the characterization for many but mostly by having Bond treat them more respectfully. Brosnan`s the 1st (and only so far) to not abuse his position of power for sexual favor, force himself on a woman physically, blackmail a woman for sex or demean a women due to her sex. Craig walking unannounced into Severin`s shower (a former child sex worker sold to brothels as a kid) is still creepy on rewatches and would have never happened w Brosnan. What the Craig era has contributed is less sexualized women because Bond is emotionally available and less focused on sex, but its taken a step back in showcasing kickass Bond girls as an attractive kind of woman. Craig is more attracted to demure, quiet types, and steers away from the assertive badass types.

My favorite James Bond movie is _GoldenEye_ in large part because I've taken to watching it as the story of Natalya Simonova, the Level 2 programmer at Severnaya. The movie makes total sense with her as the protagonist facing her nemesis Boris, from their interaction in the office before the attack, to the end where she defeats him with her superior coding skills. (He does finally break her code, but too late...) My favorite scenes are when she's stuck in the back seat of an attack helicopter with some strange dude unconscious in the front and she's got to wake him up so he can hit the button next to his head; when she's got to figure out whether and how far to trust this British guy vs her boss; and top of the list, when they're stuck on the armored train rigged to explode, and she calmly explains to him that she's doing her job, before telling him to get on with doing _his_ job. And throughout, she's got _no_ romantic or sexual interest in or chemistry with Bond. He's not on her mind _at all_ like that, and he doesn't approach her like that either. And while she's obviously very easy on the eyes, she's not glammed up at all - she looks like women I've seen in offices all the time. ... ... all the way up until "Cuba" (Puerto Rico) where she first calls him out on his macho bullshit ... and then jumps him. I'm in no position to say whether that makes sense or not, but it did feel ... obligatory to me, like "this is what the Bond Girl(tm) is supposed to do, so we'll have her do that". So that's the big weak point in the story for me. But aside from the obligatory, and unconnected with the actual story, fling with Bond the night before the main event, she's the one woman in a Bond film I've seen* who has a complete story in the movie that is not subordinate to 007. And I guess the fact that I'm an office worker, and have known people like the 3 in the office at Severnaya (and so, I thoroughly enjoyed Boris's comeuppance at the end), might have something to do with my love for it as well, relatability-wise. * tbh, I haven't seen anything since _Quantum of Solace,_ which took a real-world super-important issue (water privatization) and completely blew its chance to do something with it. I understand the subsequent movies have been good, and I'll eventually get around to watching them, but I guess I just fell out with the Bond franchise after _QoS._

The Bond Girl truly has become a sub-genre of it's own. Though I firmly believe the Femme Fatale is the authentic nature for majority of these characters at their core. Even the Sacrificial lambs such as Contessa Traci, Vesper, or Strawberry, exert the ability to match Bond's endurance. As they all proved to assist Bond in the field as they did emotionally. While of course Elektra King, Xenia Onatopp, or Miranda Frost could easily be classified as Femme Fatales, so does Jinx, Melina Havelock, or Triple XXX who equally qualify. Jinx matched Bond's killer complex and performance in the field, the same for Havelock who was an ally, but motivated by revenge, Camille Montez as well, who was also motivated by seeking revenge, which is why Bond assists her after her inadvertently stops her. At which point the last acts of the film becomes just as much her conclusion. Triple XXX who was ready to kill Bond by mission's end. These are all good girls with bad girl tendencies, the classic Femme Fatale, "a woman scorned" Like Bond, the formula to a brilliant Bond girl is not that she has something to prove, but she is already proven. Honey Ryder's bikini knife ensemble Octopussy's ecclectic troup Galore's man handling and flying fortune's Contessa's swift Swiss Alp escape Wai Lin's high scaling catsuit Jinx's assassination turned summer soiree These are moments that Instantly cemented these extraordinary women as provocative fatales with a complexity of Bond in the female epitome. As to why I'm just as excited for No Time To Die. With the new 007, Paloma, and Madeline's contempt. The Bond girl's presence seems just as integral this time.

This is a great analysis, but it sounds like The Take team is hoping for a Bond film that isn't focused on James Bond. It's possible, similar to how Mad Max: Fury Road is more about Fury than Max, but ultimately extremely unlikely, especially with the Bond formula in the past. However there are plenty of "Super spy" franchises with female leads. The formula works just fine with a woman. Though of course for it to be worth the investment studios need to know that women want to see it to a similar degree as men watching Bond.

Bond leaves the Service at the end of Spectre too to be with Madeline. So he left for love 3 times. I’m surprised they didn’t discuss Madeline at least in Spectre.

@@witchplease9695 lol Bond girls are overrated. Having to chase after a man in this case James Bond. Why did they turn the black girl in this new movie into a man. Btw I didn’t even realize she was black until you said it, all I saw was her profile name which said she was a model and her posing, which why I said what I said, I wasn’t thinking about her ethnicity. I just wanted to say something off the wall. I don’t think she’s manly, she’s pretty I’m just tired of women thinking they have to fulfill a role by this backwater industry called Hollywood

You ought to write a movie about Moneypenny (you could call it (although you probably shouldn't) "The Ultimate Bond Girl"), where SHE essentially 'makes a Bond-Girl' of James ... or maybe it's revealed that Moneypenny was actually Peggy Carter (one reason why it's important that Captain America's eventual wife was British!)
