Went to see the movie Thursday. Loved it. If you know your Biblical history you know that there were many at that time who were claiming to be the messiah for various reasons. This story is told from the perspective of one of these people who happened to be related to one of the disciples. No mocking God at all. In fact, it’s a redemptive story.

Phenomenal movie. An absolute must see. I went in with no/low expectations largely based on the trailers and marketing. That all changed once the movie started... Great performances, plotlines, story, directing and soundtrack. Had me thinking differently from that historically contemporary standpoint. And it's fiction, so I wasn't going to bother with historical accuracy. All in all, job well done. 4.65/5.

I enjoyed Book of Clarence. Quite a few mythos, theories, and plausible historical contexts mixed in. This movie will shock and even scare some people. I saw multiple people walk out on it. I guess they thought it was a str8 up Bible movie or something. Or you know some Black people get shook when White people are made unfavorable or uncomfortable. I want more movies like it!

That doesn't surprise me, what the hell were they thinking making a blasphemous movie and trynna market it towards Black folks knowing most of us don't mess around with stuff that mocks religion? I was raised in a very religious household so it would be extremely difficult for me to find any deeper meaning given the film's subject matter. Care to share any of your thoughts on what you liked about the film? I would assume someone without a religious background would be more willing to see the film

Religion is just a framework Jeymes uses to tell a more universal story of subjugation and dehumanization. It also has a good debate between belief versus knowledge. This is a good movie and not one you should skip because it "makes fun of Jesus." It doesn't. In fact, his words are a prevalent and meaningful thread throughout the story

@@asanitheafrofuturistWhat I liked most about the film was it was the story of one man’s faith. Stanfield’s character begins the movie an atheist lower class street criminal and only tries to market himself as a messiah to gain stature and pay off the debt he owes to the town gangster whose sister he’s in love with. Over the course of the movie tho he begins to grow as a person and care about others to the point where he’s willing to be crucified himself instead betraying Jesus Christ. He ends the film not only a believer but a better man than he was at the start of it. That’s what I took away from it

I agree that book III was a big tone shift but for me it was the best part of the movie, and the dramatic tone shift hit home the importance of the events of the final act. I cried so much at the last book bc it was so heartbreaking, but also so beautiful. I think to make the transition he made in the last part (trying to be vague to avoid spoiling) was completely necessary bc his character wouldn't have changed unless the moments that flipped the switch were REAL.

EVERYTHING you said! To the T. Book 3 was my fav, because it meant so much. It done so well. The only Cons I agreed with was not seeing RJ as much, but the rest of his cons I have to strongly disagree with. The romance was necessary, the twin was necessary, and Book 3 was the best part.

I saw it earlier today...and I thought it was good for the most part. I think it tried to be a lot of things at once though, some fell flat, some soared. Any biblical movie you make is a risky play but I don't see this film as blasphemous. It doesn't try to pass itself off as a true story nor does it diminish Jesus' impact on the world. It was more about a regular guy who lived at the same time and tried to capitalize off Jesus' fame and, honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if things similar to that were really happening during that time. I won't say anymore though because I don't want to give it away for anyone. I also agree, the soundtrack is DOPE. I thought that from the very first song.

The point you missed was Clarence was an atheist, and not once in the film did he ever have faith. He clearly said knowledge over belief the entire film. What he experienced was facts, so he had no need for faith. He criticized those for blindly believing in a god they never saw. The movie is showing you how this is how the black church acts today.

PHENOMENAL movie! Loved it! Favorite parts; LaKeith and David Oyelowa (Clarence with John the Baptist), and that club scene when The Jones Girls came on, "Nights Over Egypt", was just FIRE! In terms of the review, spot on, for the most part. I disagree with the comments of the 3rd book being out of place and a "different movie." In keeping with the Biblical aspect, particularly the life of Christ (and Clarence mimicking Christ's life), the Crucifixion is indeed jarring and a dramatic shift to what had been Christ's life before. So, I'd argue, the way Jeymes Samuel made that change in the tone of the movie was not only necessary but also totally relevant. Lastly, I also disagree with your point concerning the relationships between the brothers and between Clarence and the beautiful Anna Diop's character, I felt they fit well into the story. Overall, your point of the beauty of seeing Black people in non traditional roles is what I love about the work of Jeymes Samuel. The Harder They Fall, and now, The Book of Clarence ... both movies are instant classics for me!

I truly, truly enjoyed this film. I agree with the B-story/love aspect. Also, there's weight in the philosophy of "knowledge over faith" and I wish they went more in detail about Clarence's distinction at the beginning of Act 2. Regardless, the themes explored, pacing and surrealist elements really made this a special piece of ART. Definitely glad I saw this in theaters. Great to see us on the screen. Philippians 1:15-18 New International Version 15 It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill. 16 The latter do so out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. 17 The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains. 18 But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice.Yes, and I will continue to rejoice,” ~ Best book every written The Bible, I pray that many more souls get a chance to go deeper in Gods word. It had 2 or 3 moments that were so hilarious that I laughed out loud. When this KZfaq commentator discusses the funniest scene he’s seen in a while, I know exactly what he’s talking about. And I agree with him. As a student of history, theology, philosophy, political science, economics, etc., I stopped counting the film’s errors once it hit the 3-digits (100+). Some of the errors are forgivable, because it’s art. And some of the errors are unforgivable, because they take liberties that they don’t deserve to take. And I think, for those reasons, this film will die a natural death.

I can understand about the "change in tone" people say the movie had, since I went into it thinking it was a comedy. But I disagree that the third act let us down. I left feeling this was a good movie, better than two movies I saw last weekend: _The Boys in the Boat_ where I felt they shouldn't have won the big race and it ended abruptly; and _Ferrari_ (which took place a decade before _Ford v Ferrari,)_ about a couple days in his life around the big race, but I had to find out what happened later at home since there were so many loose threads.

Interesting insights. Did you notice how the setting of the movie could have been set in modern times and story could have been about same trials of a young black male trying feel valued? I talk about it in my review at Movies, Music and More here on KZfaq.

I think you didn't pay attention to the tonal shifts while there were some parts that fell the seriousness of the film was always right under the surface, and once the scab was lifted the shift happens.

It's no doubt he's very ambitious about artistic style and Flair doesn't do it anymore you have to have story and consistency with characters in a certain theme throughout the film

This is a great movie! The acting is superb! Comedy, romance, depicting the life of an everyday man, a non believer, his trials, tribulations, etc. It's just a fun, feel good movie that shouldn't be taken so seriously! Every scene in movie is great. The soundtrack is awesome! I will see it again. Black people (Israelites) don't know their power as a people! Other's know the secret and have done a great job to make sure we as a people never discern this! Lakeith Stanford plays two characters and is truly awesome in this movie. This man need's an Oscar! All the actor's did a great job!

Book III should've been just the way it is portrayed! It is a serious matter and definitely should convey that. Never felt the movie was going to end at certain points. In other word's he wanted the fun, the humor to continue, but at some point in the movie, the focus on the more serious nature of that era, The Crucifixion is poignant. It's blatantly wrong, the injustice that took place. Yet the story must be told in conclusion, especially the fate of Jesus, stating within "three day's later, ......................." Book III had many great scene's as well. Thomas, the brother. Varinia, and the carrying of the cross, etc.

I have to respectfully and strongly disagree on your Cons, except more RJ screen time, because I strongly believe in that, he was great. The romance was necessary because it’s a big part of the movie. The twin was necessary because it shows a big part of why Clarence is the way he is, and why he doesn’t believe in Jesus. And his twin kept saying he wasn’t worthy, when indeed he was. Great movie! I strongly recommend this to anyone who reads my comment. Great review! I’m about to order a bible now. 🙏🏾❤️❤️

Yeah...I got to about three quarters the way through this film and kept asking self "Where the fuck is Cumberbatch?" and then that reveal was funny as shit. I loved this film and I'm a middle aged white dude. So maybe we in a parallel universe now ourselves. Cause church groups gonna hate this film just like they hated The Last Temptation of Christ.

People are saying they did not like the trailer. I thought it looked interesting and quality. Gives opportunity for the actors. Heard other things that put me off a bit. The one that let me down was Honk For Jesus, which I actually thought was insulting. Will say this, there is vast potential for black church movies.

I'm glad i found this review. Most reviews I see being pushed on youtube are from black Christians, I'm a believer, but those who believe they know all truth and don't believe in offending someone else's comfortable racism. I wasn't gonna go see it because i thought it was trying to tell us another Truth concerning God's inspired word. I watched a few blacks talk about it being blasphemous because of the addition of blacks in the film. Stating, get your own history and make a film. Woo chile these folks out here.

@@MovieFiles that's the month studios usually drop movies they don't have much faith in. Sometimes a gem gets dropped but in my lifetime I have rarely seen it (born in 94, was a regular moviegoer from about 2012 to 2019ish, Covid really did a number on the quality of these movies they don't try as much anymore largely cause of streaming I think)

I feel like it couldn’t decide if it was satire or not and if it really believed in Jesus or not. Like most of the miracles weren’t even mentioned in The Gospels until hundreds of years after the life of Jesus and same with Mary being a “Virgin.” It’s like the characters in the movie had read The Bible or understood the story of Jesus like modern-day people would. And in the end it went full Passion of the Christ and I didn’t really know what that wanted to say. Overall, 7/10

8:37 the relationship with his brother is true to the bible as Thomas mean Twin but it really no mention on Thomas brother in the bible and thomas was also was the first on in the bile to doubt the death of Christ and was the one to question the Resurrection. So it more on the nose if you know the stories in the bible.

Whew! Had to skip a lot of these comments about blasphemy and such. If you havent seen the movie then stop making assumptions Anyway, thanks for your review. I thought the movie was quite good. Using the life of Jesus and what henstood for as a framework for other themes was a great idea. Too bad the people who should see this won't because its a "Black" movie. They might actually learn something. I do disagree with you about Book 3. I think the tonal shift was necessary since this is a parallel tò the biblical story. If Book 3 was more like the.1st 2 books, it would be more like The Life of Brian. Anyway, thanks for the recommendation. I'm so glad I follow you.

A fair review. The shift in tone makes me wonder: Is this the film Jeymes Samuel wanted to make or did he have to make concessions? To me, tThe Book of Clarence is a slice of life story with a loose biblical backdrop. Clarence is a flawed person with redeeming qualities who becomes more "Christ-like" as the story progresses. There is the perfect and unattainable view of Christ and the actual walk of flawed people trying to be better and hold fast to their beliefs -- especially when no one is looking and there is nothing to gain. There are far too many characters to successfully flesh out and tie into the main plot, which is a shame. Jeyemes is framing Black characters in film genres and narratives where we are historically present but omitted on screen. I look forward to his future work and hope the writing and character development get stronger with time. I saw him at a film festival last year and he mentioned dropping Easter eggs in his films. He kept saying "obey your crazy," which might show up in his next film (not sure what it means).
