The book explained that people from Mars projected telepathically when they spoke, which is one reason Carter learned so quickly to speak their language. He also had a super power of sorts that he did not project thoughts when he spoke, allowing him to lie. Few people of mars could ever be dishonest because of their telepathy.

Burroughs had all his main characters (Tarzan, John, Carson, et al) pick up languages superhumanly fast in the book equivalent of a montage or time skip. It's one of the weaker points in his books, but he plays it off gracefully.

I was proud to be one of the few people who saw John Carter in the theater. I knew that I liked the movie, and I bought it on DVD when it came out, but this review made me realize just how much I still REALLY like this movie. I actually shed a tear or two during the scene where John was fighting through his grief. This is a really good movie with one of the worst promotional campaigns. As many people have said, the movie should've been called "John Carter of Mars". That alone would've helped the movie's marketing at least a little if not tremendously. This review actually helped me realize that this movie has something in common with another underrated Disney movie: Hunchback of Norte Dame. Hunchback has become one of my favorite Disney movies in my adulthood, but I have no real memory of watching it nearly as much as Aladdin, Lion King, Hercules, etc. growing up. That may be because Hunchback, like John Carter, is a Disney movie without really being a kid's movie. It's got violence, death, even a little gore, plus some not-so-kid-friendly language. Those kinds of strange risks like John Carter and Hunchback rarely work in Disney's favor unfortunately, but I am very glad that they made them and gave it their all.
@jaidenbrink
@jaidenbrink 2 жыл бұрын
Hunchback isn’t underrated. It’s generally viewed as being in the same group as the lion king, ie a movie every kid has watched. Now Atlantis: the lost empire on the other hand, that movie was great, but nobody watched it.

James George I feel like this is one of those movies like Water World that you can definitely respect for how much they clearly tried to make a good movie and you clearly see every dollar on screen. Somewhere, there’s a universe where Pirates of the Caribbean wasn’t a success (maybe not a bomb, but just didn’t make enough to cover marketing or something) but this was. Granted, that’d also mean, by that same logic, *this* became a sluggish, overhyped mega-franchise with only one objectively good sequel and four shitty ones but take it for what it’s worth I guess.

@@henriquebitencourt4280 Do they even have loin cloths? I only remember mentions of belts, harnesses, and bandoleers. The Yellow Men of Mars wear furs and similar. """All were clothed in magnificent furs--the six in the black and yellow striped hide of the orluk, while he who approached alone was resplendent in the pure white skin of an apt.""" """It required but the matter of a few seconds to don the necessary orluk-skin clothing, with the heavy, fur-lined boots that are so essential a part of the garmenture of one who would successfully contend with the frozen trails and the icy winds of the bleak northland.""" Oh, here's the bit in the Gods of Mars, """Among the ornaments of Tars Tarkas' leather harness, which is the only manner of clothing worn by Martians other than silk capes and robes of silk and fur for protection from the cold after dark, was a small mirror, about the bigness of a lady's hand glass, which hung midway between his shoulders and his waist against his broad back.""" Art showing the harnesses tend to show them with a modest cloth posing pouch... which seems fair. I think it would be impractical to be running around with no covering at all... but... *shrug* Certainly when John Carter shows up from on Mars for the first time he is actually naked, and no-one comments on it, so they've clearly no concerns or taboos in that regard. Dejah's first appearance. """She was as destitute of clothes as the green Martians who accompanied her; indeed, save for her highly wrought ornaments she was entirely naked, nor could any apparel have enhanced the beauty of her perfect and symmetrical figure. """ And when Dejah and Carter are talking about Earth she calls clothing "strange and unsightly" """"If, then, you are so familiar with earthly things," I asked, "why is it that you do not recognize me as identical with the inhabitants of that planet?" She smiled again as one might in bored indulgence of a questioning child. "Because, John Carter," she replied, "nearly every planet and star having atmospheric conditions at all approaching those of Barsoom, shows forms of animal life almost identical with you and me; and, further, Earth men, almost without exception, cover their bodies with strange, unsightly pieces of cloth, and their heads with hideous contraptions the purpose of which we have been unable to conceive; while you, when found by the Tharkian warriors, were entirely undisfigured and unadorned. "The fact that you wore no ornaments is a strong proof of your un-Barsoomian origin, while the absence of grotesque coverings might cause a doubt as to your earthliness."""" So... Edgar Rice Burroughs ripped his books from real-life events that happened to his uncle in Mars... And then the Tarzan animated series reveals he also ripped-off the real-life events of a man called Tarzan and the subterranean world of Dinosaurs called Pellucidar. So... Everything he passed off as fiction were actually real-life tales, and the world was much more interesting between 1850 and 1950 than now.

Its a prestige thing. And its a issue with what animated action is perceived as. The idea was to take John Carter of Mars, and make it into something as big as Star Wars, since it already has a huge footprint. The Crux is that a gory 19th century New World novel can't freely just be a Pixar project, for no reason other than perception. It worked wonders for Gantz.

I would have loved to see a depiction of the second book that introduces the First Born (or The Black Pirates of Barsoom as they also go by, the First Born are basically a powerful dark skinned humanoid race living on Mars). John Carter has a run in with them and after several tussles he develops a great friendship with one of their leaders called Xodar. It would be interesting to see how they would have gone about casting that film, I'm thinking much akin to the Black Panther movie.

So here’s my story and take on this... I first saw the trailer in a theater and was interested in finding out what this movie is about because the trailer didn’t do anything to address that. At the end of the trailer I remember saying “Who is John Carter? What’s he so cool for?” I remember going home later and looking up the movie on a site and Wikipedia. I want to know what it was suppose to be about because the effects looked cool at least. Reading that it’s based off a book that I never hear about but influenced so many things such as Superman and Star Wars, I was “SUPER” intrigued. Love Superman since like birth, and love almost all the films and stories that drew inspiration from Burroughs series. Plus, I was already obsessed with Mars and this story takes place there, the first Book is called A “Princess” of Mars. A Princess, oooh I smell a love story (I’m a sucker for such) I made it a goal to see the film. I liked it, and I wanted more. It’s wasn’t mind blowing to me but I dug it. I was so interested in the Books because Burroughs was also the guy behind Tarzan and his work influenced so many other great creators. I buy the first book “A Princess of Mars” a physical copy and start my journey. BLOWN AWAY. I loved everything. I was I love with John Carter and his journey on Barsoom. I kept in mind the story was from the early 1900’s, so all the cliché and outdated type of structure of plot was character traits, flaws, whatever, are a product of the time. This was new in 1912. We seen, heard and watch this type of story hundreds of times since then. It was still good and unique. I was upset at how much better it was than the film. People who skipped over the film have no idea about the source material. Also, the film marketing wasn’t what it needed to be to get the masses really interested I believe. I breezed through Gods Of Mars and Warlords Of Mars and it is my favorite book series ever. I want more material based on this. Tv series, video games movies whatever, as long as it done right. Soon I will return to Barsoom and read the rest of the series. It’s been too long 😊

I watched this movie at the cinema and enjoyed it. But watching this reminded me that I read the book a gazillion years ago. Obviously I'm going to have to read it again along with the rest of the series.

I thought it was a good movie as well, though I was not keen on the guy playing Carter, but he did still handle the part ably. I hope the movie continues to gain a following so it might have a chance at cult classic status.

This movie is epic. Makes me wonder if there will be a sequel or not. I hope there will be. But let's hope there won't be a third installment. I heard that trilogies are rarely good.

Yes!!!!... I was interested to see what you’d say about john carter. I LOVED seeing it in the theater, it totally caught me by surprise. T kitsch was so much fun to watch both physically 😘 and in his characterization. I can’t put my finger on why, but I found this movie so satisfying... probs because WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME AN UN ESTABLISHED SCIFI/SUPER HERO FRANCHISE WITHOUT BIG MOVIE STARS WAS ANY GOOD OR REMARKABLE AT ALL?! This one didn’t deserve to flop, it’s a lil sad really, because I wish studios would take more chances like this ... maybe it’ll get a better rap as time goes on... k nice review thanks krimson I’ve been binge watching :)

They actually tried multiple times. One actually predates Snow White but was cut off mid production because the animator wasn’t a fan of the result. ERB even tried funding animation a second time but it didn’t get picked up. The Barsoom series has struggled to get a Hollywood adaptation live action or animated for such a long time. There’s a great book by a former Hollywood exec called John Carter and the Gods of Hollywood. It’s really sad because it’s so clear that even with the film’s failure, the actors and the production team really enjoyed working on it and that’s also why I fell in love with this film. It’s also how (at least up until the Martian) Mars is associated with movie flops with the failure of Mars Needs Moms just a year earlier.

You asked a question of what the ninth ray was and I think That it was explained that it was a new form of energy that the Thern's can harness and what allows them to use their technology and to use that ray gun thing that the bad guy uses and try to keep the people of Barsoom from learning to harness it. I'm pretty sure they explained that in the film.

I saw ads for this movie but was unimpressed, so i never watched it. Then i accidentally came across it on tv and loved it! Made me track down and read the books. Too bad i stopped at around the fifth or sixth book, but it just felt like the story was done with book 3, so the rest felt redundant. Speaking of The Asylum's "Princess of Mars", it was actually fairly decent. Just like "John Carter" it adapted some things from the book faithfully, but took serious liberties with others. Overall, if i could, I'd splice the two together to make a proper adaptation, but alas, i cannot.

I had no idea it was written so long ago as I just picked up from the fantasy section in library where the books came 2010ish. I wonder why disney did not make animated John Carter movie/series though, I hope some day someone will. Also as people have suggested, playing in barsoom as a human could make a good videogame. Good review.

watching this November 2020... entirely agree. John Carter is a favorite of mine. I was saddened when I realized it flopped in the theaters.. can't understand that, really can't! My husband enjoyed it too. I loved Edgar Rice Burroughs when young. Still do, though, I've not returned to his books in my adulthood. Read all of the Tarzan series (I think there are about 24 books) And the Mars series, John Carter of Mars. Edgar Rice Burroughs is fun entertainment. no great messages political or social, just entertainment for its own sake. Pellucidar is his hollow earth series and I remember enjoy it, also. I don't know if anyone has really done any of hollow earth stories though they may have inspired other hollow earth movies.

I've probably suggested this before but u should check out Falling Angel by William Hjortsberg and its film adaptation Angel Heart starring Robert DeNiro and Mickey rourke. It's a supernatural noir. Think...Chinatown meets Rosemary's baby. It'd make a great episode I think.

The chief villain of my second novel is named 'Tal Raquin' and while I met him in a dream, I wonder if perhaps I subconsciously lifted it from Tal Hajus in this film/the Barsoom Chronicles.

19:40 Here is a better solution to the language problem superior to both the super quick learning and babelmilk: Just ignore it. I mean, a lot of science fiction ignores it and people do not care (except in a "I am clever for noticing this" way). Some franchises try to explain it away with protocol droids or universal translators, but just ignoring it saves a lot of valuable time.
@northoftherockies

I agree. This movie could've gotten away with ignoring it because the books themselves were action/adventure stories, not hard science stories. Logical explanations were of little concern.

The movie was actually pretty good, but the book was A LOT better. The only thing I don't like is how different the overall story is between the book and movie. But at the same time I'm not suprised, this happens often when books are made into movies.

In the books Dejah Thoris and John Carter were always nude. She only wore jewelry and a belt for her weapons. It would have been a much better movie if they had gone that way.
