Reader, there may be a slight spoiler ahead, so if you haven't read The Crossing, be forewarned: Your words do the work of Cormac McCarthy proud! Seriously, I could listen to you talk about him for days on end. Also, I read The Crossing a few years ago and I keep a book review journal of all the books I've read and I went back and looked at my review for it and i wrote something along the lines of, "I don't cry often when I read but this book made me cry like a baby." All I remember is a wolf and let's just say that I am such an animal lover and so, yeah. It scarred me for life. I haven't read ATPH or CotP but I must remedy that. I'd actually like to re-read The Crossing because I don't think I picked up on the mystical parts because, well, I was probably too busy bawling my fvcking eyes out.

The Border Trilogy is more accessible than Child of God?!? This was a solid video. I think I put All the Pretty Horses as third among the series. The Crossing really, really impressed me when I read it and convinced me to reread Blood Meridian after a negative reaction when I first read it at 18. I think Cities of the Plain is underrated. It really manages to being together so many of the themes and characters and then take everything to a different place. Somehow, I forgot to leave this when I watched last week, haha. Cheers, Jack

Thnx so much! 😊 I think I would say that All the Pretty Horses is more accessible than Child of God, if only because its content isn't so grotesque. (CoG is my least favorite of his books...) But yeah, The Crossing really blew me away too! 😁

@@TH3F4LC0Nx oh yeah, I was being sarcastic. I tell everyone to steer clear of Child of God! My wife’s favorite is No Country for Old Men. I introduced it to her when we were in college, the beginning of our reading books in the same year or at the same time to discuss them. The Sound and the Fury was the next one!

@@ramblingraconteur1616 That's so sweet about you and your wife reading books and discussing them together! 🥰 That's every bookworm's dream relationship right there! And I would have known you were a keeper if you'd pressed a McCarthy book into my hands. But then I might have had second thoughts when you broke out The Sound and the Fury! 😂 JK, I like Faulkner well enough, (I'm actually reading Light in August right now, coincidentally! 😀), but I think that, as something of an inheritor/product of Faulkner's legacy, McCarthy has far surpassed him. I've always felt that Faulkner put all his effort into the style of his books, (which is usually superb), rather than into their subtextual content. Cormac's books are both gorgeously written and (I think, at least) much more philosophically profound. But again, I own several of Faulkner's books, so I still like him. 😁

I definitely agree that Cities of the Plain is underrated. I just finished it a few days ago. It's probably my least favorite of the three, but that's not a knock against it at all. It's a perfect ending to the trilogy.

The boarder trilogy is fantastic. I loved The Passanger as well totally blown away by it! Also I suggest checking out Sutree. I just finished it a week ago. It was much harder to read than his other books, just how it is written, but it is SO worth it.

Just finished all three within the last couple months. Completely agree about The Crossing, and it's my favorite as well. What a powerful ending. Cities of the Plain ties all of the story threads together with a bow, but I really love the epilogue -- though it took me a couple re-reads to interpret it: the validity and importance of the lives of "fictional" characters / events.

I think Blood Meridian is pretty much unequivocally his magnum opus, so you may have already hit the watermark, lol. XD But personally I think No Country for Old Men is his most thematically rich work (surpassing, imo, even Blood Meridian). No Country is a DEEP book; the only problem is that the writing is probably the weakest in that book, because he originally wrote it as a screenplay. The Road is also incredibly powerful on an emotional level (so much so that it'll legitly kinda make you question if living is even worth it). But I think I would probably recommend The Crossing. The writing is gorgeous, it's ridiculously mystical in its outlook and its very profound as well and the ending is downright devastating. It's a little disjointed structurally, but that's where I'd personally go next. :)

I know a lot of people say Blood Meridian is his best, and depending on what day you ask me I'd agree. It's undoubtedly a masterpiece. But I'd argue that The Crossing is just as good... maybe I'm biased because I love it so much, but I really do think it's almost a perfect book. Part one is some of the best writing I've ever read. I go back and forth between The Crossing and Blood Meridian as my favorite.

I've definitely ridden that same fence myself. I looooove The Crossing; it's so good! But for me, there were a few times in that one where the writing got a little out of hand I think. But that ending is still one of the most powerful I've ever read, so I definitely see where you're coming from. :)

Advice to readers: go online and download the Spanish to English translations for the bits written in that language throughout the book. Why McCarthy made this choice, I have no clue, but he did. You can muddle through without, and the books are still great, but they are improved if you read the translations.

or use an online dictionary or actual dictionary and learn a little Spanish while you're at it. Seeing as Spanish is the language in much of locations the books take place in. Jeez, why wouldn't he include it? it'd be strange to not have Spanish at all in books set in the border states / Mexico.
