YES! That tone is straight as a line! It's one of the hardest things to do, to control a vibrato and sing not just a line straight, but the whole piece! Speaking as a singer with roots in Gospel and blues it's a real feat!!!

Her voice slides over you like tanning butter. Her brilliance works in spite of her self. She's not a performer like we see today. She seems too shy to move. That's what's mesmerizing about her. We're captivated by the music that emanates from this non-performance. Where is it coming from? It's musical talent we see unadorned by theatrical fanfare. Love A.

Astrud was married to Joao Gilberto when, in 1963 Joao and Jobim and Stan Getz got together to record Getz/Gilberto. It is one of the great albums everyone should have. Astrud was not a professional singer at the time though according to Joao, they enjoyed singing together around the house. Getz, hearing her sing, invited her to the recording studio to sing on The Girl From Ipanema track. Interestingly, she was not credited on the album itself, but only in the liner notes. That would not last long. By 1964, she was a featured member of the New Stan Getz Quartet. A live recording of this group can be found on the album, Getz Au Go Go. It Might As Well Be Spring (2:49) The Telephone Song (5:29) and Only Trust Your Heart (7:02) can be found on that album.

For me, this music conjures-up the notion of a purer, untainted, and more idealistic world where there is music without offensive lyrics insulting my God-given intelligence and sensibilities. True musical artistry to be appreciated throughout the generations, and a sound that we do not have hide from our children (who should have virgin ears). The lead vocalist, her sound is like a diamond in the earth! Easy listening music that is simply, romantic, beautiful and timeless! (My favorite here is, “The Girl from Ipanema" - a true classic)! I love it! Madinah Ilyasah 3.18.19!

I have so loved Astrud, since I was a kid. And trust me, I am no longer a "spring chicken". Her voice was just, I can't even describe it. The original, one and only, "Girl from Ipanema". The very first movie she performed that song in was, "Get yourself a College Girl", with Chad Everett, and Mary Ann Mobley, 1964. That's when I fell in love with her voice. And I was only 5. I have everything she's ever done. And, Stan Getz. TY for posting!
