The BOTCHED Executions Of Tudor England
During the reigns of the Tudor Kings and Queens, we associate the time period with extreme bloodshed and barbarism. In Henry VIII’s reign there were estimated over 70,000 people sentenced to death and killed for crimes in his almost four decades on the throne. We associate Henry and his children with religious turmoil, and also sending anyone even their closest friends and advisors to their deaths. Henry execute two of his wives, and was also known for turning on his closest friends. Mary I also Henry’s eldest daughter is known as Bloody Mary for her treatment of protestants where she ordered many to be burned at the stake. It was a time of great bloodshed, but there was an expectation upon those who’s job it was to perform executions to carry out their work professionally. Being an executioner was a public office, and if things did not go well, then an executioner could be liable to much criticism and hatred. It was their job to carry out the King or Queens will, executing the condemned, but if they didn’t do a proper job then things could turn very sour. During one botched execution, where Jack Ketch made a mess of proceedings beheading someone, it was said that almost a riot was incited, with the crowd crying for the blood of the executioner next. Today we look at some of the most botched executions of the Tudor period.

He did! Apparently he asked a foreign princess to marry him, to which she replied "I would gladly marry the King of England (Henry VIII) if I had two heads, but alas I have only one, and I would feign keep it." You can't blame her, can you?

Chai Crimes you couldn't rebuff or refuse Henry's advances the only thing that saved Anne of Cleves was 1 he rejected her an maybe since he was getting older and poorly that is sure what saved Catherine Parr he had her arrested one night then when they came to collect her the next day he had forgotten because his memory was becoming crap and she begged and convinced him she was not disagreeing with but learning from him also I think Cleves and Parr like Catherine of Aragon came from a family that lets just say Henry didn't wanna make enemies with especially in his poor decline of health

Oh come on!!! Henry VIII wanted to rid himself of Anne Boleyn because she didn't give him the son he wanted. All Thomas Cromwell did was carry out Henry's orders. You have to remember that ALL the men who were Henry's ministers were only there because Henry wanted them there. "Karma" did not come into it.

It wasn't the Executioner who cut the ligaments in Mary Queen of Scots neck it was a man from the crowd who used his dagger to do it. Unknown to most people, the executioner in Tudor times was usually a criminal who had committed petty offences. He was given the choice of becoming an executioner or be hanged. Many who wanted to stay alive became an Executioner. Many Executioners became expert with the axe and built up a fan base, who would attend all of their executions.

I am completely against the death penalty altogether and yes complications definitely happen with official state- ordered executions today. But things absolutely are better than this era at least in England and similar countries. Imagine going to your death being jeered by an audience with no respect for the fact that you are being put to death, then having to lay your own head on a chopping block so that it can be removed from your body.. or being burned alive.. Death penalties are barbaric, but especially in this very public and gruesome manner..

@@yespls4184 I am also And get what you are saying but truly in 500 years we are really not all that different There are still witnesses, the entire thing is a spectacle. Imagine they psychological torture of solitary confinement 15 years, stays and delays, filling out your will, final phone call. Having your head shaved and a wet sponge put on your head? That was ten years ago? Driven 40 miles in a van? As in Texas? How about the people that do this ? Strap people to a gurney? Stick iIVs in someone's arm? My god..100 years from now people will think we were barbarians. I do now...

70,000 executions over Henry VIII’s 40 year reign works out to 4.8 executions per day. You’d think his executioners would have gotten plenty of practice.

An axe doesn't do its work by being sharp like a Longsword would. It need only be whetted once a year. Here in the northeast a good woodcutting axe is made of black iron tapered to a sharp steel edge. It has a three and a half foot to four foot handle which has a slight curve to increase the leverage as you guide the business end down. As you raise the axe above your head you slide your strong arm up till it is just below the axe head. This whole time you never take your eyes off the spot you wish to split. You then use the axes weight to swing it down to the target the whole while sliding your good hand down the haft while never taking your eyes off the spot. When your hands touch the axe will be in the block and the head will be on the groun@

@@Jenifer_G Lady I'm catholic. No arguments here. Mary being called bloody when she executed the least number of subjects other than her catholic grandfather Henry vii is a sick protestant joke that only heretics get. In fact Richard iii was the last legitimate king as a plantagenet. All monarchs since are shady usurper and heretics. I was only explaining the correct way to behead someone with an axe which is simple but not something that comes naturally without practice. Beheading with a sword any child could do.

Would Anne Askew's execution be considered botched? She was burned alive but someone paid the executioner to attach a necklace with a sac of gun powder to her so it would quicken the death if I remember correctly? The whole burning alive and waiting for the flames to be tall enough to reach the necklace would've taken a bit of time and basically killing her via explosion of the chest cavity sounds pretty awful....

I bet Cromwell thought to himself I framed an innocent woman not to mention her brother and other men for outrageous and ridiculous charges to ensure she along with the brother and others would be executed (Murdered ). So Henry would have her out of his way so he could marry Jane whom he thinks can give him the boy he wants! And this is this is how he repays me!!!!!!!!!!

Henry was the one who framed and execute wives who had his 3 year old child Anne and Elizabeth or banished them Catherine of Aragon) and his girls (Mary) out of each others lives he was the tyrant and yes Cromwell was the fixer of all this but Henry had the power to stop it and save Anne but he did not want to
