This comment section makes me feel like I'm taking crazy pills. This isn't lois lane 2 feet above the ground, the plane is very high up and gliding so he doesn't need to apply so much pressure immediately. If Homelander matches the speed of the plane and applies a constant 9.8 N or 1 g of force upwards, that counteracts gravity and causes the plane to stop falling faster and maintains the same rate of decent. They're still very high up and the airplane even without power is shown to be stable and still getting some lift from its wings. That lift from the wings limits how fast the plane falls. Given that 9.8N is the amount of force applied to the airplane when its just sitting on the ground, the airframe can definitely take it. Then he could slowly go above 9.8N to slow down the plane. Boeing 747 Cruising speed (Horizontal speed) is 580 mph or 259 meters a second. If Homelander applies 1g or 9.8 m/s/s of force in opposite direction then he can halt the horizontal speed in 26 seconds. Vertical descent speed is unknown, but was presumably 0 when the pilot was killed. Then the airplane free falls until it reaches terminal velocity. A skydiver's terminal velocity is 53 meter a second. A plane going straight down would not have lift from the wings and is probably more aerodynamic than a human so it could reach a higher terminal velocity. But once again this plane was shown gliding and so was probably not falling at its terminal velocity. Homelander would have to apply 2 gs of force upward to make the plane slow down by 1g. Note that the plane would still only be feeling 1 G upwards in this situation. Given that they were in the middle of the Altantic, they were probably at cruising altutude. Cruising altitude for a Boeing 747 is 35,000 feet or 10668 meters. That feels like plenty of space to decelerate. What else does Homelander need to be mindful of. First he needs to make sure the plane doesn't tip over. When the plane is in stable flight its much easier to control and the passengers are ok. If the plane starts to spin then i think its unsaveable and everybody in the plane dies in a washing machine. The part of the airplane where he applies the force is important too. Maybe where the landing gear comes from since that section has to hold up the whole weight of the plane. Second, if the engines are still on, which they might be, they would be applying a lot of horizontal speed, then as the airplane starts to dip lower a lot of vertical downward speed. Homelander would have to destroy the engines. Just use your brain, how does a plane manage to slow down enough to land? By decelerating so hard it tears itself apart? No, it decelerates slowly over time until its speed is slow. Homelander could have saved the plane in under half a minute.

Can we also talk about what utter bullshit "There's nothing to stand on. What do i stand on, air" is? Is he implying that if there was something to stand on then he could save the plane? How does that change anything about the situation. And he can hover in midair, so unless i'm missing something he actually can stand on air. Like what is he even trying to say here.

That’s impossible unless you’re Uber smart. The deceleration has to be equal to acceleration at exact moment of impact or like he said he goes right through the hull just how bullet penetrates skin. He’s to small to do that with a plane. He’s already pretty smart if he knew that but I don’t think he could calculate how fast it was going down to execute under pressure like that. Nor did he care so that’s a factor but I digress.

That's not possible, He technically can lift the plane but at that speed he will just break through the plane and create a hole in it, Superman can do that because he has the telekinesis bubble that wrap around the object bigger than him so when he hold it they don't break down due to gravity reasons

Shoot we even found out later that he lied about going right through the hall of the plane because when Stillwell house blows up homelander was able to move both butcher and the baby to complete opposite sides of the world in no time flat both completely unharmed. So he is more than capable at controlling his strength while moving at high speeds. He just didn't want to do it.

I see the problem of one singular tiny point carrying a whole plane, it's like trying to pick up a piece of cake only with one centimetre between your thumb and index finger; 99% of the time a small piece is just gonna break off. He'd have to get some kind of "plate" or compensation, like chains to wrap around the airplane so he could still halt it from just one singular point without damaging it further. Given his speed he could probably thought of at least something. But the point of the scene is to show that they're severely unprepared as legitimate heroes, so it's still a good scene over-all. I just like speculating on what-ifs
