My headcannon is when he was really little, he would watch the guard’s practice from behind a wall or window or something, and every time his dad would catch him until eventually his dad let up and let him practice just so he’d stop watching. Instead, Link beat some of the soldiers in combat and ever since then he’s trained. I imagine Zelda watching him beat the grown men in combat while she tries practicing her power. While she’s watching, Link gets distracted by a frog that hopped into the arena. He runs over and picks it up. Since he’s like 8, he tries to eat it, with a guard stopping him at the last moment.
