My question: The newly opened Gotthard tunnel is stated as being able to handle 250 trains per day, whereas the Brenner will apparently handle 400. Why the discrepancy? Both are two tubes, same rail gauge, etc. I would have expected the throughput capacity of both tunnels to be similar. BBT, if you are monitoring, any explanations?

Yes, Wikipedia also says just 200-250 trains/day. Maybe 400 assumes only high-speed trains with >200 km/h...

This tunnel wil be electrificated in 25 KV AC 50 Hz. TAURUS 1216 3 voltage locomotive( Siemens made), is allowed to use the normal line, beetwen Innsbruck and Bolzano/Bozen. Vinschgauerbahn will be electrificated with the same 25 KV AC 50 Hz, coming soon, and STAEDLER 3 voltage regionals trains will make directs trains beetween Innsbruck, and Males/Mals im Südtirol. BR 187 TRAXX Last mile Locomotive wil be allowed on this basis tunnel. These are BLS( Swiss private railway company ), leased locomotives with last mile mode on unelectrified lines, for low powerfull evolutions( these locomotives are using last mile mode in Brenner Bahnhof, in diesel low power, under FS/RFI 3000 V DC catenaries, now. In B.Basis Tunnel, BR 187 may high power running in electric mode ( Zweifrequenzlok), in 15 KV AC 16,67 Hz ( OBB system), and 25 KV AC 50 Hz ( B.Basis Tunnel, Vinschgauerbahn, Eastern countries with recents electifications since 1950/1960 after 2nd World War. When this locomotive comme in end of tunnel( Fortezza/Franzenfeste, or Bolzano/Bozen/Bulsan), this locomotive will using diesel last mile mode under 3000 V DC.

first of all, its named Franzensfeste and not Fortezza !!! and its not "Alto Adige" - its Südtirol !!! TYROL and not ITALY !!!

Yes of course, however, today provinz Sud Tirol is good allowed by Italy and EC. The worse period of the province is finnish, the worse time was during abject Fascist regime, when Mussolini's Gestapo purchased South Tyrol partisans, this partisans wanted not agree Hitler/Mussolini fraternity. South Tyrol partisans( deutsch Kultur), had ennemy Fascist regime, however, liked Hitler ! Agressive actions are failures, against Italy and destruction ENEL electric lines. Diplomaty was successfull. Alcide de Gasperi was the first Italian Council president to allow special status of Provinz, after 2 nd World War Vinschgauerbahn is lucky. When FS Italian Railways closed the portion Merano/Meran-Males/Malls, provice has not agreed, and has maid transfert property of this railway to th province successfully: Regionals diesel trains are not FS, but Südtirol ! I have seen in 90' s slogans tagged on walls near the railway( closing period): KEINE ZUG, KEINE TIROL Vinschgaubahn is a touristic railway, and and his success go to a new evolution: 25 KV AC 50 Hz, decided by Florian MUSSNER president of province. FS have not decided this project, but the PROVINZ ! Diesel regional trains are replaced by Electric STAEDLER regio trains with 3 Voltage, directs beetwen Innsbruck and Malls, allowed on OBB and FS railway networks (test are making beetwen Meran and Innsbruck, now.) Alls railways lines in Innsbruck region where electrificated immediatly after 1st World War, FS line too, but with 3700 V AC Trifasic system 16,67 Hz. Italian Railways have maid total 3700 V Three phase switched off in 1976 between Alessandria and Acqui Terme( Piemonte) In 1910 Jahre in Italien, und 1920 Jahre in Tirol, Bahnen elektrifiert mit Weschelstrom Unterfrequenz 16, 67 Hz( 15 KV 1 Phase für OBB, 3700 V 3 Phasen fur FS ) Autobahnen gebaut in 1964( Europabrücke in Innsbruck), für ersten Winter Olympischespielen in Tiroler Haupstadt Neue Brenner Basis Tunnel, in Zunkuft , in 25 KV AC 50 Hz( normal Frequenz Weschelstrohm) elektrifieren Zweifrequenzlok( BR 187 TRAXX Last Mile), und 1216 TAURUS 3 Spannunglok, in der neue Tunnel fahren.

"Co financing by EU" - hahaha! So Austria is a so called "Nettozahler" afaik wheras Italy ....... So more ore less Italy does not pay that much than your cake model visualizes - and Austria evan more...... Stop telling us "The EU pays for"....... It ist not EU s money it is ours! But never the less that projekt is necessary and should have been started decades ago! WE
