Interesting note. Northern Ireland's railway (Translink) was the only part of the UK rail network that wasn't privatised in the 1990s. It's still public/government owned to this day.

how about the london underground? That wasn't privatised (although obviously it was private in the 1800s and early 1900s)

@_CaptainCookie London underground doesn't count as part of national rail network. Its a metro system.

Discovered your channel through a random recommendation by YT and really enjoyed it. I've watch some of your other stuff now and subscribed. Very good editing and a lively and informative (and authoritative) commentary on subject matter I love, will make this a channel I look for forward to exploring more.

Almost perfect but no part of "these islands" has ever been in the Schengen Zone!

You don't need a passport to enter the Irish Republic from the UK if you are a UK citizen, and vice versa for Irish Republic citizens entering the UK. An official photocard ID will do, like a driving licence. We are both in the century-old CTA (Common Travel Area). To quote the UK government 'The CTA is a special travel zone covering the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom (as well as the Isle of Man and Channel Islands). British and Irish citizens can, at least in principle, travel passport-free within the zone.' (I don't like that 'in principle' caveat, though) Airlines connecting the two countries may demand a passport, so check before flying, but ferries don't, I think.

Four filling stations must reflect that cheaper fuel is to be found within the Republic. A long established state of affairs?

Like most smart card systems in the UK… oyster works nicely but that’s one of the good systems, most smartcards in the UK are rubbish.

@tobeytransport2802 One of the few sensible things the Irish government did was to introduce a single card which works in all urban areas (and in a surprising number of rural areas too), instead of having a different one in each town.

New Irish subscriber here, originally from the Republic, Irish Patriot, raised Catholic, still have extended family in my home County of Meath, but living 21 years in Manchester U.K. and still proudly hold an Irish passport - our Taoiseach (Prime Minister) Leo Varadkar wants us to drop our entire Irish constitution (Bunreacht Na hEireann), our flag and our national anthem, our very Irish Catholic identity, in pursuit of a United Ireland, linking Dáil Éireann (Parliament) and the Stormont Assembly, but we in the Republic and many in the North post-Brexit and post-Covid are totally opposed to this idea - in fact, during the height of Covid, Catholics were having to travel to the North to attend Mass in a much saner atmosphere, as our Gardai (An Garda Siochana - police) are totally out of control and are totally corrupt - our Irish history means so much to us and yet, our current Irish government have sold us out and are traitors to the Irish people, doubly tragic given our history 🇮🇪☘️🇮🇪💔😔😪

Mm gasoline and diesel has always been cheaper in the Republic, than in NI. Thus near the border, there are few petrol stations within the north.

@@triggerwarning7662" Do I Need a If you are a British citizen, you do not need a passport to enter Ireland. However, some carriers and airlines might require identification. Irish immigration officers check the ID of all passengers arriving by air from the UK and might ask for proof of British nationality, particularly if you were born outside the UK." Thats from the gov.uk site. You ain't getting to NI to hop across that border without some sort of ID either.
