These guys are great. You never see them waste time doing dumb stuff like measuring. So what it has a little bit of runout, when the truck driver breaks the other axle they will fix it just as wobbly and the vibrations will cancel themselves out.

My Father once broke a track link on his old bulldozer, and needed a wrench on an order of magnitude that we didn't own. So, he used his oxy-acetylene cutting torch on some scrap inch thick plate steel, and made himself a monster wrench. We only needed it once, and it still hangs from a nail in our barn. He no longer owns the bulldozer.

Lol. Not a lot of farm boys in the comments I see. Fellas this may not be a picture perfect repair but I assure you I have seen much worse last a very long time. I've done much worse myself. There's a big difference between patching farm equipment to finish the harvest and welding a truck axle that is guaranteed to be used on a massively overloaded truck every day.. the other difference is the type of metals used to make farm equipment compared to truck axles, some materials don't take kindly to welding without propper weld procedure and heat treat.. with the hours of use this axle will be expected to do they could of at least cleaned the flame cut end to get it to at least be somewhat concentric so it doesn't put undue pressure on the diff centre

Goodness! By chucking the first cuts on the rough slag left by the oxy-cut-off you can see at least a .025" run out that will remain after you do the threading and joining. First step should have been putting that cut-off end through the headstock of a larger lathe and turning that slag off the cut-off end before using that surface for any chucking and subsequent straight/taper turning. That axle is going to be running with that eccentricity for it's lifetime now. Welding right over the unprotected cross slide of that lathe - brother - not in any jobbing shop I've ever been in!

there's a reason why no one will do it it is not a proper way to repair a axle. the axle will snap again right at the smallest part of the beveled point were the treads meet up. welded steel can be stronger then the forged steel itself but the one thing welds can't do is be stronger then the amount material that's missing. the only way to properly fix it is by two ways, full gap weld or friction welded. this would never pass a "repair" as wen Xrayed it will show all of the non joined areas of the structure. that axle will snap again if it actually was a "repair" used with in a month or two.
@byteme971811 ай бұрын
@@dragontechgaming6677 100% correct. The only reason to justify these ridiculous repairs is because replacement parts aren't available and the vehicle is stuck on a road. It's stuck on the road because the same vehicle would have had many similar poor repairs. You see this all the time in developing countries where substandard repairs are carried out routinely.
@percussion4411 ай бұрын
Something you guys have to keep in mind is these people live on very thin margins. If a man is lucky enough to have a job delivering goods in his truck it is far better than other "jobs" in India/pakistan etc. These people don't have the luxury of pulling over and chilling while head office sends out a new truck or new parts etc. That Truck needs to be fixed NOW and inexpensively. Too long delay and he could lose all his business. The cost of a new axle might be more than he makes in 6 months. Westerners with their "white people problems" have no concept of what developing world problems are like.
@pbe696511 ай бұрын
@@dragontechgaming6677 the center contributes little to the strength compared to the edge. Even if that repair is less than ideal and I would not really trust it, the shaft would probably not loose much of it's strength if it was made hollow. I'd be much more concerned by the out of roundness and the vibrations that are likely to follow ... imo it's not really these guys who "do what nobody will do or wants to do", but rather the poor guy who will drive the truck with that axle ready to snap again 🙄

Never mind cleaning the dags off from the flame cut end, just stick it in the chuck so it won't run concentric and damage the chuck in the process 🤦♂️.. if this axle lasts long enough and that's a really big if considering the forces going through it, it'll end up damaging the diff centre.. chucking on a flame cut edge, welding on a lathe without protecting the ways and not getting it to run concentric before machining, I'd fire myself if I done a job like that in my shop
@brustar515211 ай бұрын
Bingo, I should have read these comments before making exactly the same observation. No jobbe's shop I ever worked in would have tolerated that as the first step. Now that axle has a built-in eccentricity that will shorten the life of bearings, seals and pumpkin gears. He could have done it right instead of quick by just doing that first step. When these guys have all the equipment, there's no need to still do the job so crudely.
@Chainsnsprockets40211 ай бұрын

I did a temporary repair on my truck in Ukraine. Their shop had no working equipment. Welder was broken, drill press broken, and so on. I had to buy them new tools and then begin repairing. In this case, besides the things already mentioned I am pretty sure they put the welding ground on the lathe body, passing the current trough the bearings of the lathe.
@markshort909811 ай бұрын
@@Rubensgardens.Skogsmuseum that poor lathe, when welding on a lathe the ways should always be covered to protect them from spatter and the ground clamp should be put on the work to prevent arcing through the bearings and prevent arcing strikes on the lathe itself.. at worst the ground should be put on the chuck jaws but I don't recommend that because if it's not a good connection it will leave arc strikes on the chuck jaws

Enjoyed the repair video & quite impressed. However, I don't know why he didn't cup the small bit & inset the tapped screw fitting inside. Now the axel has a weak point, the narrow neck, half it's strength & won't last. Had he cupped it so it sat flush over the large bit, there wouldn't be a weak point & would be much stronger, almost as strong as a full sized axel. He knew how easy it was to break off when he hammed off the broken end that was a bit thinner. Under high toque, it'll just break off I guarantee it.
