A project for the shiny new lathe but what about the rest of the axle where it was broken?

Very inventive, but a waste of time. Why is it that nobody, including this guy, tightens up ALL THREE jaws of the chuck? Three jaws, three chances for a wobble. Have these guys never heard of a dial indicator or dial caliper? Even an old Lister diesel engine will have periods of vibration, which can be minimized by BALANCING and PROPER MACHINING. None of which occurred during this "repair". Quit showing us this crap~!

Do you heat treat the axle afterward?
@horstmuller751222 сағат бұрын
Of course, the part will break again, but with a bit of luck the driver will not survive the accident and the warranty will not be due.

Good job! All tolerances are guaranteed less than 2 fingers.
@caddyrack6 сағат бұрын
Totally agree. Did you see the heat treating procedure? WOW... All of OSHA regulation were adhered, steel toes sandals, tight fitting clothing, face mask for fumes, and of course SAFETY glasses. Then again you don't need then if you squint when grinding. Want to bet longevity of that axle?

I can only imagine what our machinist would be screaming if I would use a cutting torch, a grinder and a welder ( that had no visible ground clamp on the work piece which means the the ground was going through the tail stock) would be screaming

The metal changing color during cutting means it is WAY too hot. You need to sharpen or replace the cutter.

The job looked great when finished, but could never be as strong as a new replacement. Also, I feel that (if you are going to weld the job whilst it's still in the Lathe), it would be better to place the Earth Electrode directly onto the shaft being turned. In this way, the extremely high Welding Current will not be transmitted through the Lathes valuable Headstock Bearings - where there is some resistance due to oil, and the Ballraces themselves.

Well ,well ! Some of the repair processes were deemed standard practice in Pakistan and it will probably be a functional repair for the slow running Lister single cylinder used on a water pump or the like. I would never condone the use of an angle grinder on a bearing journal and certainly not on an oil seal surface too. I must have missed the heat treatment process after fabrication ?? It also never showed if he used a piece of grade 250 mild steel round bar for the join. Needless to say they certainly improvise in non developed countries.😂
