During the Tudor period, executions were common across England. However some of the most shocking executions came inside the walls of the Tower of London where 3 Queens of England were beheaded in barbaric scenes. Henry VIII had Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard, two of his wives executed within the walls of the Tower of London. But during the reign of Bloody Mary I, there was another Queen who's life was claimed by an axeman inside the Tower of London.
Lady Jane Grey was named the successor to Edward VI and she is remembered today as, 'the 9 day Queen,' as she ruled as Queen for only 9 days and was never coronated. Following being declared Queen, Mary I rose up and gathered an army and she ousted Jane from the throne. The Privy Council changed their minds and supported Mary to save their lives, and Lady Jane Grey who was just a teenager was then imprisoned inside of the Tower of London. She was found guilty of treason and was sentenced to death, being either burned at the stake or beheaded at the Queen's orders.
Mary I initially spared Lady Jane, but following a number of rebellions she was then ordered to be executed. Her husband Guildford Dudley was beheaded on Tower Hill, however Lady Jane Grey was spared a public spectacle and on Tower Green she was executed. Mary allowed her to be killed in private, and following this she interred inside of the Tower of London's small chapel. Her execution was performed by axe, and it was noted to have been a clean one.

Imagine being Jane sat in her room and hearing the guards walking to her door and knocking . Then when she opens the door they tell her it's time to die. She must have been absolutely petrified. I cannot imagine the fear she must have had walking to her place of execution and seeing her executioner there with the axe. Then waiting for the axe to come down on her neck. The only good thing about this is she was killed quickly and didn't suffer anymore than she needed too. Otherwise an obsolutely horrific thing to do to a young innocent girl.

@M.Almudena Sanz Sanz yeah imagine if Lady Jane Grey was never killed she could have had a better life with Gilford and they both could have had children and if Lady Jane Grey looked after her health and was healthy then she would have ruled England in 1603 that would be interesting on what Elizabeth would think since Elizabeth hated both of Lady Jane Greys younger sister in-fact could Lady Jane Grey have been a bigger threat to Elizabeth then Mary Queen of Scots and imagine if she was not killed either and heard that instead of giving the crown to her they will give it to Lady Jane Grey now that would be interesting all around Europe and the Stewart’s if Lady Jane grey became queen of England in 1603 or if she is dead her children do you think Lady Jane grey could have been a bigger threat then Mary queen of Scots and in 1603 the death bed of Elizabeth I wonder if she would accept Lady Jane grey as air or do you think she would possibly might give the crown to Mary queen of Scots

Executed, not murdered. She tried to avoid the charge of treason if Mary or Elizabeth were declared the heir. This way she could claim the privy council had offered the crown but she did not ask for it, claim to be the heir and did not accept it. Mary had her executed to deny the protestants anyclaim to the crown through the Grey/Dudley fsction. This left Elizabeth as the only other possible claimant but she had been disinherited byher father Henty 8. Mary was always concerned that a protestsnt faction would take possession of Elizabeth and overthrow Mary .

They were all highly trained noble ladies. They were pretty much professional at it. At a level that you can barely imagine. They were not dumb and they would understand fully that being good at their jobs would be life or death to them and possibly to those around them. You can think it was a huge pressure on these young girls (and boys too by the way). You would be right to think that. However, they were groomed by their relatives to perform. And they pretty much had no escape. They could not just say I "I quit and will just be a commoner over there". It was not that easy. Their entire lives were dependent on them doing what they were expected to do. This came together with marrying with people they did not know, performing all kinds of official duties.....and.....yes....dying with dignity if it came to that.

People who praise God under those circumstances are true disciples of Christ who know where they're going after death & know also that anger and resentment not only does no good, it actually is something Christ taught against and with good reason. The Christians that Nero tied together and used as a torch to light city streets often marched to their death singing because they knew the truth. Give your heart to Christ and you'll understand because you'll know the truth also.

@@bethanydee1920 Not wanting to question anyone´s religion. But I will just note that powerful people have their very own particular concepts when it comes to religion. If they did believe and follow everything.....they would not find themselves in positions of power and would not be able to do a lot of what they do. This is not to say they do not believe in some God or Jesus. Quite positive some of them honestly believe there is something else out there. The problem is the way in which they understand things. For instance....Jane Grey and Mary Tudor would never have fought if they really followed Jesus. Its absolutely nonsensical to fight for different versions of what is practically the same belief. Much more nonsensical because Jesus supposedly preached peace and love. So....you need to be somewhat removed from Jesus teachings in order to even start a war between protestants and catholics. And they did....they pretty much fought a civil war in between them. Lucky for England that it lasted only 9 days. But it could have been another War of the Roses. Both Mary and Jane were not eager to quit. Jane pretty much attempted to arrest her privy council with her at the Tower when the Mary started gaining the upper hand. All quite ambitious and not very Christian like behaviours.

500 years ago everyone needed to know precisely who was running the government. Division and discussion were seen as leading to the collapse of law and a danger to the structure of society. Even if LJG and Dudley had converted to Catholicism they would have remained a danger and would have been killed. In a way, it solved many problems we have today. For example, it would lead to former Prime Ministers no longer writing ridiculous books in an attempt to excuse their utter failure in government and the subsequent impoverishment of millions of the general population. Perhaps someone should suggest this to Starmer when he forms his new government. Instead of sending Sunak and company to the Lords, he could send them to the Tower.

To OP. "Bloody" Mary was a rank amateur compared to her father Henry VIII when it came to killing, persecution and destruction. 72,000 were executed during his reign. "Bloody" Mary burned 284 protestants in five years. Her predecessor, her half-brother Edward VI had over 5000 people killed (and he was just a child!). During the Prayer Book Rebellion of 1549, for example, more than 5,500 people died after they were told to change their religious practice. If you do the math, Mary was pretty kind compared to her father and brother. Dividing the number of people killed by the years of the reigns, leads to Henry VIII killing an average of 1946 people during each of his 37 years. Edward VI's six-year reign had 917 deaths per year while Mary only had 58 during each of her five years. Out of the three of them she was certainly the least bloody. Mary I gained the moniker "bloody" simply for burning protestants. As she was a Catholic later Protestant history demonized her, especially after the Glorious Revolution in 1688 when the constitution mandated a Protestant head of state. "Bloody" Mary was a name which became more commonplace in the 1700's. This was also a time when the *myth* spread that the Catholic Church had claimed the Earth was flat. This myth has endured to this day. In reality the ancient Greek Eratosthenes calculated the circumference of the Earth 250 BC. No Medieval sources ever mentions a flat Earth. Explanation of the Earth as a sphere already exists in the 1000's, from a copy of Bede, De Temporum Ratione, made in England or Normandy, late 11th or early 12th century. In 1240 there even is a depiction of people standing on a round earth from all angles, the French Gossuin de Metz’s ‘L’Image du Monde’ Victims? History? Better read up on it.

The skill of the executioner was crucial in both beheadings and hangings. Done well, they are among the least barbaric forms of execution. If multiple blows are required or the drop is too short, the reverse is true.
@wezmarauder2754
@wezmarauder2754 Жыл бұрын
@@roberthudson1959 Hanging was foolproof and an instant death if done right. A long drop and a sudden stop. Neck snaps. Provided the noose is tight around the neck. Beheading however requires the executioner to be strong and accurate enough to land a good strike on the first try. Considering many executioners were drunk (as their work was considered both loathsome and sinful, and people ostracized them) this was far from certain. Hangings were far more common than beheadings but hangings were considered the punishment for the most common of thieves. Noblemen didn't get hanged. Even Saddam Hussein was upset in the early 21st century when he heard the Iraqi court was going to sentence him to death by hanging. Being a soldier he had hoped he would be executed by fire squad - a soldier's death.

Depended on the skill of the executioner. Elizabeth's step-sister Mary died a horrible death as the person swinging the axe was unskiled or drunk or both. Anne Boylen died quickly as the swordsman was a professional executioner - he actually hid the sword from her and distracted her so she never knew what was coming.

For the life of me I still don't really understand why she was executed. I mean am i right in saying that she didn't want anything to do with being a queen??? I think she was unfairly executed tbh. She was used in the most meanest of ways by power hungry men desperate for power. I mean imagine knowing your fate is sealed u know your gonna die at any moment then the footsteps of those guards getting closer & closer then them knocking at your chambers telling u it's time to die. Must've been absolutely horrendous. No wonder her ghost is perhaps the most famous of all ghosts in Britain today. A very fascinating bit of history. Very well covered. I wonder what would of came of her had she not got executed???
@dgray3771

power hungry men might have used her for power but it is her own cousin her own blood that had her executed. When in fact she should have protected her cousin. As a elder family member she not only failed her but couldn't show any mercy to her own young cousin. The girl was only 16/17 while she was 38! We are not talking about someone who could not have done anything to save her. She was queen and just did the most despicable act. Not only regicide but she's a kinslayer. She died much more peaceful than she deserved. And rightfully deserves the title of Bloody Mary.

Neither the idea of a queen regnant nor the idea of a Catholic monarch was especially popular, so Mary I's seat on the throne was far from steady. The people tolerated the former because they had no choice, but Mary's religion was an ongoing issue. As the closest legitimate Protestant heir (Elizabeth had been bastardized), Jane was an ongoing threat to the monarchy. She was doomed when Protestants rebelled in her name.

Elizabeth I executed close to 50× the amount of Catholics compared to the protestant heretics who were executed during the reign of Queen Mary I. But Queen Mary was unjustly tagged with the horrific nickname. If we are looking at history objectively, the title of "The Harlet queen Heretic ; Bloody Bess the Butcher. Usurping Bastard of Boleyn" is more fitting, especially when it comes to historical accuracy and it tends to roll off the tongue in a poetic manner as well.

There's no such thing as a confessional in the Bible or praying to saints. The head of you're so cool church is called a pope which means Holy Father that's blasphemy the term is only used once in the Bible to God the Father.
