Absolutely agree that young children would be advised to stay out of unfamiliar wooded areas. But once you've moved out of your parents home, let's hope that folks have enough common sense and experience to find themselves sufficiently prepared wherever they choose to go. I'm not saying to drop someone off with 100 km of forest in every direction. But if you can't manage a few hours of forest to save a few days and a friend, then that sounds like Darwin calling.

In fairness, though, it's not unrealistic, 'cause they were all a bunch of inexperienced people taking on a hike that was beyond their level without realising it. This kind of thing happens a lot in northern Norway and Sweden, it's very common for inexperienced hikers to fall off cliffs or die in avalanches or rock slides here because they underestimate the dangers.

Yeah, saaaaame, lol; literally just saw it, after reaching the 14:00 mark of this video, so that he didn’t spoil the ending, because man, that setting/monster/entire fucking movie sounded like a fucking PERFECT fit for me; I mean, I really liked the Lovecraftian & ambiguous nature of the monster, as well as the huuuuge emphasis is on how creepily/eerily quiet temperate forests are, for 3 quarters of the movie, while giving us (& the characters) true despair & panic for the latter half of those same said 3 quarters; just amazingly well made, love that, & would love to make my own “Predator”-style horror movie set in a *completely quiet* temperate forest one day, specifically, but even more focused on the monster stalking & scaring both we and their victim(s), and not on any character arc or more human-centred theme or value, really; maybe only to just further contrast & magnify the monster’( & hi)s theme Maybe get an anthology of film-length narratives, completely separated from one another, but only chronologically, so to really capture the different facets of such a kind of monster properly through how it basically _”interacts”,_ so to speak, with different (groups of) people, to explore the theme of how “terrifying”, to say the least, could such creatures really be with unlocked potential, basically; And while I’m at it, I might as well try to get in there a few of all the well-known “Cryptids” (while trying to “popularize” lesser known ones of a more foreign origin, obviously, all in their own, loosely connected, other series of cinematographic productions (of more-or-less the same particular type); Stupid no-good clichés & conventions about really shouldn’t be there at all in the genre, so I’d like all that to be *categorically absent* from all that fucking project; basically, when you experience these productions, you shouldn’t expect anything else than what you’d expect from the terms “horror”, “generalized existentialism”, “supernatural hierarchy”, “environmental supremacy”, “surviving dinosaurs (yes, bit of an outlier, there, but like I said, all major Cryptids, like the Loch Ness Monster, or the Megalodon, etc…) And I’d also like to add aliens in this entire fucking thing : Like, smth to see what kind of aliens do exist in a universe that has our Earth cursed with even just _one_ of those *b l o o d - c u r d l i n g* monsters, already that I’ve -implied- said that we’d see the same kind of inclusivity for time periods (both past & future) that don’t get to have these kinds of scenarios And if that’s all a lot to weave together, than I should have different “continuities”, all with their own special set of of Cryptids & (again, loose, more-or-less) overarching storylines & world-buildings; That’s gonna be e-SPE-cially for what gets into space horror finally : Both _”Alien”_ & _”Star Trek (Enterprise) MEETS Alien, literally”_ style; like, most of time it’s _really_ just the interstellar equivalent of like in this movie, & go in a silent forest that feels *”larger than life”,* however the fuck I can even _feel_ like that even makes sense…

One of my favourite horror movies, I think it's actually what got me into actually watching them. As for Luke, I think it's a great portrayal of realistic reactions. Fight, Flight or Freeze. People don't really get to *decide* which one happens, it can just happen. It usually has nothing to do with the person themselves, pretty sure our brain probably takes into account which one is the most likely way we'll survive. In the scene, Luke moves behind the shelves because the burglars are between him & the door. Exits a no go and the burglars are armed. He does grab a bottle and he's obviously thinking about what he can do, what he should do. Pretty sure Luke wants to help, you can clearly see him thinking and he does grip a bottle like a weapon. But what if it becomes a hostage situation? What if there's another burglar waiting? What if a blow to the head isn't enough to save the others? What if he gets everyone killed? Cower or Fight. Not enough info and not enough time. Inaction keeps Luke alive but costs him his friend. In the woods, there are a few times Luke decides to take action. When they find the carcass in the tree's, Luke says they should go while the others wonder if they should take it down, what could've done it, etc. After the nightmare-visions and they see the runes carved in tree's, Luke states it's a warning. When the Jotunn takes Hutch, Luke is the one who says Hutch is screaming and they need to save him. The others say they need to think and "get their bearings." Inaction costs Hutch. (also the fact that when faced with a similar scenario of a friend in danger, the friends also want to plan and think despite there not being enough time) This repeats more or less, although Luke's ability to act is taken away when he's bound, trying to get free. Finally with information and freedom, Luke takes action. Freezing here means death or worse. Burn the place to the ground. Moder, the Jotunn Forest-God-Thing tries to make him submit to its will or he dies. Moder will make Lukes decisions for him. Subjugate Luke like the rest of its rotting followers forever. With the chance to do something, rejecting both options. Luke lives and fights to survive. Escaping. It's sad. The first time; his choice to cower cost a friend. The next chances to act were shut down and when he finally gets another opportunity to take action, it's pretty much too late for everyone else. Out of the Jotunns reach, after being pretty much tortured by it with his own grief. With such sadness and anger, regret. Facing down a being that took away close friends before you could do something. What else can a person do but roar like the wounded animal one is? But that's just my take on it I guess. (also the creature design is breathtaking. I just LOVE it)

Meh, the guy also lost his friend. Sure, it's unfair to blame Luke. At the same time, they all had traumatic experiences, and were stressed out. Luke is already seen as kind of a fuck-up, it's pretty realistic that at least one of them had these thoughts. I would bet that in a normal setting, none would have said anything like that and finally accepted the death of their friend without blaming Luke. But given how recently it was? Given how the guy had to walk kilometers through forest on a fucked up knee? How they were stalked by a supernatural killer? I think it's unfair, sure. But also understandable.

The Ritual is in my opinion, the scariest horror movie ever made. It’s expertly made, and doesn’t rely on jump scares to be absolutely terrifying. Instead, it uses disturbing imagery and scares in the background, nearly unnoticeable. And best of all, the characters don’t make stupid decisions, but rational ones. This movie is an absolute masterpiece of a film that should be recognized and talked about more.

The Ritual is clearly not the scariest horror movie ever made. And it’s nowhere near a masterpiece. There’s nothing sensational or groundbreaking about it. It’s basically the classic cookie-cutter format of four men in scary woods who come across a monster/ supernatural entity bla bla bla.. The plot is underwhelming, the acting is luke-warm and the ending’s nonsensical. Only an amateur would call that the ‘best horror movie ever.’

This movie has a really good buildup. How they first encounter the gutted animal, the weird altar in the cabin, hearing something weird outside, their nightmares... seeing the creature only vaguely in the distance... it has a great pace and isn't revealing the monster too soon. Plus, it makes the norse horror in the forest really believable. 10/10 Horror film imo. Even a bit better than The Descent.

Watched this a while back and personally loved it, despite not being a horror fan (can't watch them, I get anxiety). It was scary and gory, but also very smart & interesting. I loved the decision to kill hutch first as he was the heart of the group & seemed like the typical "hero" group. Even that decision was well explained (the creature takes out the strongest link first to slowly pick the group out one by one). This predator-like choice of the monster also explains my fave part about the movie, abt how the creature singles out the one with the most pain, which happened to be Luke. The movie really shows how cowardly Luke was at the start and how, based on what he did, stereotypically he should've been portrayed as a selfish man. But by being singled out by the monster, it actually shows how much he was in pain and suffering - which redeemed his character in a very poignant way in my opinion. And the last scene with him screaming at the monster actually got me tearing up at how his pain kept him alive, and ultimately the efforts he took to survive despite the pain (the stalking monster) is what eventually led him to the clearing (forgiving himself & moving on). At least that's what I took away from this movie. Overall one of the best writings in a horror movie for me.

I almost didn’t watch this movie because Netflix’s description of it was complete ass. I did watch the trailer and that’s what got me to watch the movie. I thought it was spectacular! I don’t watch a lot of movies, especially horror ones, but The Forest has to be the one of the best horror movies I’ve seen in a long time! The fear of the unknown, the tension ramping up, it’s a very uncomfortable movie for me, but I’m glad I watched it.

I think the opening is a dream/nightmare. Robert keeps looking at Luke extremely accusingly throughout the whole liquor store sequence. While in real life there may have been a few glances back at their friend the intensity of stares makes me think it’s Luke’s survivors guilt projecting on his memory of the incident. There’s literally nothing he could have done in that scenario that wouldn’t have risked his own life against people so quick to harm and kill yet all Luke sees from his friend is “why aren’t you saving me” even though he’d more than likely save no one with different actions.

@@ookyspookychic2529 lol, well, then I'm happy to help! I, too, loved this film. And both movies we compared it to. I was 18, when the original Blair Witch was released in theaters, and I caught it early- and was absolutely stunned by it. I have alway's loved horror movie's, and I have alway's loved well-written, intelligent story telling, so that ambiguous, creepy as fuck ending.... 👌🏻 It stayed with me for a long time. Funny how a good movie can be scary without a single jump scare, or any gore whatsoever. Just like the slow burning, theological terror of The Witch. And the psychological horror of this one: PTSD can be a living nightmare, and the mind can create torment that may not be seen by other's, but to the sufferer is very, very real. Now, toss in a malevolent, beastly, demi-god that know's and controls that trauma/torment... and you have yourself one HELL of a movie monster! This flick is relatively brilliant, and I can't recommend it enough.
