Hey guys what’s happening? Niyat here with film comics explained.
As requested, today we’ll be exploring The Ritual, the 2017 British horror film directed by David Bruckner and written by Joe Barton, based on Adam Nevill's novel of the same name, published in 2011.
Starring Rafe Spall, Arsher Ali, Robert James-Collier, Sam Troughton, and Paul Reid, the film revolves around a group of old college friends haunted by the death of one of their own.
Reuniting for a hiking trip in Sweden, the fractured friends hope to use the adventure as a final send off to their fallen comrade. But when one of them is injured, forcing them to take a shortcut, the team building exercise enters the realm of the cosmic horror as a menacing presence begins stalking them.
"The Ritual” is no ordinary stroll in the woods. It's a harrowing tale of grief, guilt, friendship, chaos and old gods that lurk in the shadowy depths of the uncharted Scandinavian wilderness.
As we delve into this deep, dark cinematic forest, we'll examine the story, the monstrous entity that haunts our protagonists, the mythology it’s based on, the differences between the novel and film, in addition to the meaning behind the ending.

Yes. YES! This is a thing that can end your existence or break your mind. A snarky comment is not appropriate at this moment. Very few productions recently explore the absolute finality of an existential threat. That's what I want to see. The extremes of human experience and behavior. We want to feel what they feel, to explore what we might never experience. Are we obsessed with ourselves? Unbelievably. Us that a bad thing? The extreme opposite. ❤

I think it's a great representation of the craziness that Norse mythology offers with its monsters and especially Loki's children. It is somehow unimaginable but after you see it, it makes sense in a way. It's terrifying as something we don't understand but at the same time recognizable.

The most often used runes here are Othala (the one that looks like a moon lander) and Algiz (the one that looks like an arm with a three-fingered hand). Othala means "heritage" or "the piece of land inherited from the ancestors". It represents the letter O. Algiz means "elk" in older rune alphabets, but has a side meaning as "help" (= the "outstretched hand" symbolises protection). It's not 100% clear what letter it represents, but all the rune books I used stated it was Z. This makes sense in context: Othala tells the hikers, that they've entered Moder's inherited homeland. Algiz refers to Moder's deer-like appearance with the outstretched human hands, and could also be used for protection by the worshippers. But there's a second interesting reference: The shot at 5:04 shows Algiz in the middle and Othala on the right. If you translate them, this is Z (Algiz) as the last letter of the Latin alphabet and Omega (Othala) as the last letter of the Greek alphabet. This shot says, that things have come to an end for the characters: Three of them will die and one won't return home. In reverse, if you went by the rules of Stargate, Othala would be the chevron, that symbolises your starting point - the home planet. But here I'm pretty sure it represents Moder's homeland.

I never thought that I'd say Netflix made my favorite horror movie, but this is it. I've also read the book, and normally I never like the movie adaptation better, but in this case I prefer the movie. The setting, the build up of dread, the fact that the characters are believable, and then the creature reveal and design are an amalgamation of what makes a fantastic horror movie.

This is such a rough movie. I can't get over the toxic friendship and toughness themes. He wouldn't have saved Robert. He would've just died. Acting like he refused to save him from a fire or something is absurd.
@morganleanderblake678
@morganleanderblake678 Жыл бұрын
Also, I think it's what sets him apart from his friends. He's faced a situation where he had to do nothing because to do anything would just lead to him getting killed too. All his friends are just "OH I WOULDA" about it, when "they woulda" just been killed too.
@themanwithtomanyeyes8282

@morganleanderblake678 Some people prefer to look at as in, sacrificing your life for life of your friend is worth the effort. But let's be frank. Most people would just stay behind that counter even if the think they wouldn't. And dying is legitimate outcome, even if you put up a fight.

I love this movie. Not only is the monster design incredible but the inclusion of very old mythology is fascinating. We think of Norse mythology as just stories in books. For thousands of years people lived in those old northern forests and the myths were very real to them. Trolls hiding in the rocks. Trickster spirits. The thought of it being real with an old village paused in time from the old pagan days was so cool.

I just love how people still talking about this movie tbh, nordic myth as horror concept always fascinated me and add unique elements to the movie, love it

This is definitely my favourite horror movie, and it's mainly because the horror elements are not the focus, but a way to deeply understand the real horror, the trauma of the protagonist. I love how his inner hell seeps into the forest more and more, and I love that he has to embrace, to become stronger for it to save himself. Being able to save others is an amazing thing, but against insurmountable odds, against a world that seems to want you to either submit or die, finding a way to live and survive on your own is plenty heroic.

when Moder sat in that position @ 20:20 it very much reminded me of Totem Poles. Something about that image really hit me

The reason moder couldnt leave the forest i think is cause of either the runes that kept her there or the forest itself keeps moder there cause it can't go where moder has no control of , it controls the forest therefore it bound to the forest, just my best guess

This Seems Like A Really Cool Survival Horror Flick. I Like Luke's Battle Cry Of Victory & Survival. Awesome Video!

Cool! Haven't seen your videos in a while! I highly recommend you do a video on the 1975 dystopian action thriller ROLLER BALL starring the late James Caan and Sir John Houseman.

I love love loved this movie and loved the creature design and loved the minimal use of it. Great example of good design and good minimal use to leave my imagination to do the work. ❤

10:04, holy crap listening to you I just realized it, how that Loki deity was playing some high level chess. He went for the group's strongest alpha which meant it had been studying them sometime before. That's so damn wild 😎
