Westminster Abbey

3 жыл бұрын

Discover the constant evolution of Westminster Abbey over the last 1000 years, from the 10th century up to the construction of The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Galleries in the Abbey’s triforium in 2018. Working in collaboration with the Abbey’s in-house team, and with external archaeological advisers, the film was created by London-based company AVR who specialise in architectural illustration and digital reconstruction. The film takes you on a historic journey, both outside and inside the Abbey, and reveals that that the Weston Tower, built to take visitors to triforium level, is simply the latest chapter in a long history of architectural development at Westminster Abbey. The film was made to accompany the displays of exhibits in the Galleries within a section under the theme ‘Building Westminster Abbey’.

This from Wikipedia: "The novel's Kingsbridge is fictional. Follett set it in Marlborough, Wiltshire; he chose that location because the cathedrals of Winchester, Gloucester, and Salisbury could be reached from there within a few days on horseback. Kingsbridge Cathedral as described is based on the cathedrals of Wells and Salisbury.[4"

It's amazing how you can video a video without a member of staff catching you doing it, they pay there entry money to the abbey plus extra to visit the queens diamond jubilee galleries and then start filming this video, when I did it no member of staff was about, being ah we closed that day and it gave me time to do the same. 😉

@@ottens11 It's because we have different priorities and different aesthetic values these days, that's why we can't build anything like this anymore. But the historical evidence leaves absolutely no doubt that it was built by skilled masons and guildsmen. There's a huge paper trail proving that; employment records, proof of wages paid and received; church records; government records; Acts of Parliament - basically there's 0% doubt that it was made by stone masons and master guildsmen.
@ottens11
@ottens11 Жыл бұрын
@@bruno5137 😂 'different priorities'.... you dont think despots and dictators would love buildings like this? stone masons and masters of stonework, sure... by definition they are masters. You need tools and machinery to complete these feats though. Its like saying you've got the payments details of the workers who built the pyramids. Chisels and rope pulleys arent enough. Again, you'll need to do better than that, think more.

It was demolished once it was no longer needed, as with most defensive structures built in the middle ages, once the threat of peasant revolts/civil wars was gone. The advent of wall-breaching artillery (look at many defensive structures ruined during the civil war) also played a huge part in this - who wants to keep maintaining an utterly useless defensive structure?

To all English people being proud of it last 1000 years, this structure was rebuilt/redesigned & reconstructed many times & entire new structures were built in place of the original structure over last 1000 years, so of course it’ll last...if you wanna see thousands of years old original intact structures lasting even today, visit Asia/North Africa/South America/Southern Europe...
@bazzatheblue
@bazzatheblue Жыл бұрын
It hasn’t been rebuilt many times,it was largely built in its current footprint under Edward the Confessors instruction and then rebuilt in French gothic style by Henry III that’s more or less the building you now see. It’s not some ancient pile of rocks like the Pyramids or Ur but it’s still a venerable foundation and getting older every day.

Where did you get that at? 1800s? No one with an ounce of brain matter would or has never said that. Perhaps you misunderstood? Westminster Abbey, as it's known today was consecrated in 1269 under King Henry III. Before that, there was St Edward the Confessor had a monastery there. King Henry III had it rebuilt in 1269, due to, I believe some damage to the original cathedral. It's sad, because King Henry did not live to see it finished.
