Dr. Jordan B. Peterson and Mathieu Pageau explore the reoccurring theme of first and second born brothers in the Bible. How the first born inherits the burden of immediate change, while the second born receives the burden of that initial changes long term effects. This pattern is correlated to the philosophical concept of inner and outer cycles.
Matthieu Pageau is a Canadian author, residing in Quebec. For two decades, he’s discussed religious philosophy and symbolism with his brother and icon carver Jonathan Pageau, a frequent guest on JBP's KZfaq channel and podcast. These discussions were part of what motivated Matthieu to write his new book, The Language of Creation: Cosmic Symbolism: A Commentary (amzn.to/3LVzkgj).

As the oldest of 4 girls, I had to take up the call to become head of the family when my stepfather died. There was no time to think, but imediate action to take. There wasn't a thought in my mind to do anything less. Daddy never got son thought he needed to carry his name, but he got as close as he could get with adopting me, and I will hold his name with honor until I die. The role of firstborn may be challenging, but it has as much good purpose as any other role.

I'm the youngest of two. But I have four sons 18, 22, 24 and 32. BELIEVE me I see the distribution of "the burden". My oldest is addicted to heroin, 15 years now. My youngest just left for basic training (ARMY) the two in the middle work hard and love much. But I see it for sure. Funny how those who seem to carry the most manage to run the farthest. @@katherinemarkva7552 so this sentence goes against the premise and makes it difficult to understand. Your last sentence to make sense in the context of the video “ the ones with the most burdens run the farthest” except the one with the burdens accomplished the least. Now if you meant he handled the burden well until it crushed him and he succumbed to addiction we would need more context. I’m just a bit lost on exactly what you mean, without the context of the video your comment makes complete sense, but in context of the video it is displaying the opposite.

It's not a competition. We're all supposed to be looking out for each other to the best of our abilities. There shouldn't be a burden on anybody when we have extra resources. It's a good experiment to give everyone the same help we wish we had. Going through suffering is how we develop our unique styles of love. Our style of loving is how we tell people what we need. We do unto others as we wish done unto ourselves, not what was done unto us. People always treat us how we treat them, it doesn't matter if they're being treated poorly or nicely. I believe it's important to be paying attention so that we're able to break cycles like that where we pass emotional trauma down through generations.

As a first born, I was the pioneer and set the standard for my two younger brothers. It has taught me to be a leader and team builder. Striving for excellence was always my goal. Of course, I didn't get preferential treatment as my parents thought that we should be treated equally. This taught me humility and compassion. Life has a way of rounding off the sharp edges and I can say that I would never have it any other way as I hold myself to a higher standard. It's not a burden but a mantle to wear with authority.

I think my firstborn mentality as a female plays out as the need to set a good example and take initiative in my own life… I haven’t really had the luxury of being able to provide and have always valued my time more than anything else. I’m not stupid but couldn’t finish college due to financial and health reasons… However like mikhaila peterson I learned to take my physical and mental health into my own hands (also had autoimmune based intolerances) and really became better off than I ever had been before. The bar was set too high in a lot of ways and I’ve learned to walk away from a lot of the expectations and instead just accept where I am.. I always work towards something better with whatever I have and however I can. 💭

When you are born first there is no one to show you what to do, so you have to try something, anything. If you have younger siblings they watch and see whether what you do works out. Usually they can improve on it substantially or come up with something better. It’s the same in business - the innovations that follow a first innovation are usually better. Having said that, someone’s got to a take the risk and clear the way and it is the first born.

"It's better to be the second born because it's easier" that is exactly what a second born would say. As a first born of four I will say: "The bigger the challenge, the greater the glory." Being the first born has taught me the value of fairness and responsibility, it has taught me to rejoice in my siblings' greater fortune and to lead by example and sharing what I learned from my mistakes so they don't have to make them. I also think that in actuality it is usually the first born to be the one to carry the traditions more strongly with them, because their parents were their only frame of reference. I never wanted it easier, resilience is, ironically, the gift a hard life gives you.

I’m 37, 2nd is 35, 3rd is 30 and youngest is 27. I’m the only one who doesn’t live at home with mom. I left when I was 18. I’m the only one with children.

I'm not sure who I could share this with, but: I inadvertently took my older brother's blessings. Let me explain. I had had an older brother, first born, who unfortunately died at 4 months, about 2 years before I was born. About 6 years after I had been born, my sister came along. And now there's two of us. And so although I'm not the first born, I've had to take up the responsibility of being the oldest (first born) after my sister came into the picture. It kind of reminds me of what happened to Esau and Jacob (like how its been mentioned in this clip), but in this case I'm like both characters.

Jordan's early comment about competition within cooperation always seemed apparent to me with consideration to hunting a mammoth together. You want to be better than others, or vye for position within the hierarchies that this guy lives so much, but you want them to do well toward your shared goal. You want your rival/kin to do well enough that you can kill the mammoth together, but if you're a greater asset to the hunt than you and your household (or cave) get dibs on a whole mammoth hock for the rest of the winter. Competition within cooperation makes human beings so great, on the individual and collective level, being that we are atop the food chain. The only threat to us is our own competitiveness and egocentricity, but we should have some faith in humankind to possibly solve even itself. We've obviously been cooperative enough to live so well beyond survival, in such comfort that hot food arrives at our door.

I love this topic. The pattern in history is interesting. It's always the younger inheriting the promise. The older or firstborn is passed over or rejected. In Jacobs case, God told Rebekah, "the older will serve the younger" before they were born. Paul references this in Romans as prophetic to the rejection of Israel and acceptance of the Gentile nation who would make Israel jealous.

Being the second born myself I was shocked as a little girl and as an adolescent . I met unexplained hatred, back and front stabbing by the first born, a mother without sane reasoning , and a tyrant, violent father. Who wants to be born in such a worldly curse!!! That's not family. That's hell on earth. Trust me if you were in my country, born in my shoes, I don't guarantee you any settlement by that inner cycle. Eternally so.

“If you live in a corrupt world, it’s better to be the second born” Yes I’m afraid as a first born he’s quite right. My younger brother gets to live the more traditionally rewarded lifestyle; study well, good grades, university and off to the races. He’s living his best life but I can’t help but feel like he misses the bullseye since I intentionally unintentionally messed him up when I was younger. “Take care of your little brother” I was told, but who takes care of me? Who stole all the attention? I don’t secretly wish for his downfall or anything it’s just that I know there are justifications for life when you feel like you can’t have something you need. Part of you turns off and you perpetuate a world where that part of the human spirit is actively smothered. I on the other hand inherited all my parents stress, a super tight chest so bad (I was kicking the womb to make room and made it easier for the next guy to come through but nobody gives you credit for that sort of thing) I wake up 8 times a night, have a medical condition that affects my life such that I can’t actively participate in the corrupt world (much to my great chagrin and I’m still trying) without feeling like I’m either selling my soul or going to be abandoned again. But I’m not envious of those like my parents and brother who’re successful, because I know what their success is predicated on and how they treat themselves. Not how I’d wanna be successful (I have my own definition of that as well) and treat myself.

When discussing Esau and Jacob, remember while Jacob was in effect "exiled," Esau sold his birthright and did not receive his father's blessing. Esau did not inherit what was due him. Instead Isaac said to him, "You will live by the sword and you will serve your brother." But the biblical pattern IS that the younger will be served by the older. Paul talks extensively about this in terms of Isaac and Ishmael; the "first and last Adam;" and the "old and new man." All of these picture the conflict between the flesh and the Spirit with the solution of dying to both law and sin and living to God instead.

But I am very confused now because in Genesis 19:31 Lot fled with his 2 daughters and both daughters said they need to sleep with their father to preserved their seed as Sodom was destroyed and on verse 32 it said that the firstborn went in and lay with her father, meaning she had sex with him then on verse 34 it said that the firstborn told the younger sister that basically it was her turn to lay with her father to preserved their seed. So if the bible in this text refers to firstborn literally as the one who was born first as the older person, then why is it that Jesus when he is called firstborn it means something different according to different Christians? Could the Jehovah Witness be correct and that Jesus was created and was the firstborn of Jehovah? Can someone please explain this? Thank you!

God showed Adam and Eve he required a blood sacrifice when he killed the animal to cover their nakedness after they fell. Cain decided he wanted to worship God his way even though he knew God required blood sacrifice. The point of the story is good intentions will not get you right with God, He requires us to worship him as he commands not according to our thinking.

The real meaning of Esau and Jacob. Isaac, the blind father, is your consciousness; your awareness of being. Esau, the hairy son, is your present objectified world - the rough or sensibly felt; the present moment; the present environment; your present conception of yourself; in short, the world you know by reason of your objective senses. Jacob, the smooth-skinned lad, the second son, is your desire or subjective state, an idea not yet embodied, a subjective state which is perceived and sensed but not objectively known or seen; a point in time and space removed from the present. In short, Jacob is your defined objective. The smooth-skinned Jacob - or subjective state seeking embodiment or the right of birth - when properly felt or blessed by his father (when consciously felt and fixed as real), becomes objectified; and in so doing he supplants the rough, hairy Esau, or the former objectified state. Two things cannot occupy a given place at one and the same time, and so as the invisible is made visible, the former visible state vanishes. Your consciousness is the cause of your world. The conscious state in which you abide determines the kind of world in which you live. Your present concept of yourself is now objectified as your environment, and this state is symbolized as Esau, the hairy, of sensibly felt; the first son. That which you would like to be or possess is symbolized as your second son, Jacob, the smooth-skinned lad who is not yet seen but is subjectively senses and felt, and will, if properly touched, supplant his brother Esau, or your present world. Always bear in mind the fact that Isaac, the father of these two sons, or states, is blind. He does not see his smooth-skinned son Jacob; he only feels him. And through the sense of feeling he actually believes Jacob, the subjective, to be Esau, the real, the objectified. - Neville Goddard. I love both these guys, but their interpretation of the story is speculation.

Furthermore; he claims to be a biblical scholar while supposedly overlooking the fact that it’s a seraph not a serpent in the garden.
