So, I'm a parent. Not a gentle parent, but I don't hit or yell at my kids. But that doesn't mean giving in to your kids demands and tolerating disrespect. Discipline can also mean taking things away, giving them things to do that they aren't normally responsible for, or having to earn things back. Discipline doesn't always mean hitting.
@Cheerleader6448604 ай бұрын
Rightbidk y ppl think this is funny too. And what you described is in fact gentle parenting.
@blueismylove31284 ай бұрын
And gentle parenting doesn't mean you don't discipline your kids. I feel like not enough people are really interested in learning about gentle parenting and what it truly means and methods. The immediate thought is "oh you just spoil your kids". Not saying this is your way of thinking, just something I noticed. Toni Phantom (they/them) and Pleasant Peasant Media (Gwenna) are really awesome mothers who talk about gentle parenting and share real life experiences with their kids while also respecting their privacy if you wanna learn more.

I interpreted Tristan's comments as both "she's too lenient" and "I don't know what I can and can't do here". Kids can be raised too leniently, so they don't follow rules and they don't listen to others. And he, as the boyfriend, might not have been sure what he could do. Can he put the kid in time-out? Can he take away privileges (ie screen time)? It's a weird line to walk. I don't think the implication was that he wanted to hit the kid, though.
@criticalalertfrommicrosoft25902 ай бұрын
Exactly. I think the boundaries of his responsibilities for the GF's child weren't discussed in the relationship. She just dumped the kid on him since he was "free childcare" while she worked or whatever. Meanwhile he was working as well and trying to do his job. I feel like the child WAS spoiled and didn't listen to him or take him seriously as he wasn't the parent. Basically a "you have no authority over me" kinda mentality. Or just the GF wouldn't let him discipline the child because she didn't either. Even though the child may have needed some form of correction. Idk just my thoughts on relationships I've observed where a lazy single parent is dating someone who doesn't have children.
@jenmiranda13Күн бұрын
Yep. And the flip side to the same situation (of dating a single mother) is that the boyfriend is given all the freedom to do whatever he wants because the woman prioritizes her relationship over her kids. I've seen it happen to someone I know and it was sad because the person had younger siblings who didn't really grow up with a father figure besides 1 guy who ended up passing away shortly after his dog died. (The bio father wanted to be there for his kids but he got deported and got into an accident which left him permanently disabled)

14:39 I wanna defend homeboy here, I had a neighbor I was friends with works from home while his partner worked out of home and he ended up being a babysitter more than a boyfriend, his girlfriend didn’t even let him put her kid in timeout, either because gentle parenting or because she didn’t want him disciplining her son. But at some point you have to understand that your child care provider, whether it’s a partner, paid stranger, or family has a right to discipline the child, now always ALWAYS make it clear discipline ≠ hitting
@artemis_justiceaizawa597828 күн бұрын
Yea, that was one thing I was wondering, was this ex a "gentle-parent" or a gentle parent, the difference being someone who doesn't vs does discipline their kid, the one that doesn't is only using the "gentle-parent" title to cover for why their child is a brat, and in which case he may have meant he does believe in discipline but not hitting the child and wasn't sure whether he had the right to discipline a child not his but a partner's. Alternatively he may have been a parent who does believe in discipling being hitting in which case, thank god he was buzzed.

I had an ex bf and I knew that he was going to be my ex the moment that he defended his friend physically assaulting her 3 year old in front of us. The situation; Child was well behaved but a bit wound up as she had company over in her small apartment, when the child asked her very nicely to read a story to him what she did was scream at the child in anger and drag the child off by the arm to his room where she beat him on the bottom so hard much harder than I would ever feel comfortable hitting a consenting adult. My ex completely supported and defended her behavior and that was when I knew that we would not have any future together. I wish I would have reported what I saw to CPS but I did not, I was only 19.

I also really respect tristen for not wanting to date a girl with kids because the trauma kids with single parents (not just mothers PARENTS) go through being introduced to the dates and partners just to see them broken up is terrible. I know not all single parents introduce their kids to their partners but I still think it would be hard for all parties even the ex partner after building a relationship with this child just to never see them again

Facts. My mom had 5 different partners throughout my life she introduced us(my sister and I)to. Only 2 of them I cared for( one died when we were young, the other cheated and him and my mom were already growing apart due to his alcoholism). The other 3 were toxic, abusive, and manipulative(my sperm donor included). Her last one made me want to unalive myself and contributed to me finally developing bulimia to deal with the stress.

The misconception that gentle parenting makes kids spoiled is not only false but is more of a testament to parents who misunderstand gentle/responsive to mean allowing their kids to do whatever they want. In truth, gentle parenting is referring to a style of parenting where you treat your child with respect all the time, even when providing structure that they may not like. An example of this: if a child is complaining about going to bed, “I understand that you don’t want to settle down and go to bed, but you need to be in bed. Would you like me to read to you or sit with you for a bit as you fall asleep?” The options will vary as this is just one example. For perspective, a parent following parenting as we’ve seen might say “that’s too bad, go to bed” or something along those lines even if not as aggressive. The second example fails to show respect (would you accept being spoken to that way? Or want your kid to tolerate it when they’re older?), doesn’t validate the child in any way (this makes them feel unseen and as if their own feelings and desires don’t matter, not good for the self esteem), and it’s just not effective due to the aforementioned reasons. As someone who’s been a nanny for over 10 years and has seen and what happens when real gentle parenting takes place Tristan’s comment gives “I have 1 experience with gentle parenting and therefore I decided it makes kids spoiled.” Doubt he did any research to see if his prior partner was practicing proper gentle parenting before coming to that conclusion. Really infuriating because the opposite of gentle parenting is what we’ve seen for too long which is parents thinking they are authoritarians in their children’s lives from minor to great degrees. This kind of parenting leads to just as many issues as the “I just let my kid do whatever” parenting. Neither are helpful and real gentle parenting can honestly raise a better human race. Really wish people would do their research before they throw out uneducated opinions like that.

Okay I'm paused at 15 min in so i could be wrong, but i don't think that tristan thinking the kid is spoiled by his partner's "gentle parenting" necessarily means he thinks corporal punishment or authoritarian parenting is okay. There's definitely uninformed people who think "gentle parenting" means no parenting at all and they can produce spoiled rude kids. That said, if he DOES mean he thinks the kid should have been spanked and parented in an authoritarian style, I would also pass on him. I do like the hair and nails though, idk what those other girls are on about.
@emmaholt73479 ай бұрын
Was scrolling through to see if anyone else said it. Yes, there’s so many people who do “gentle parenting” wrong and give no consequences for anything, then end up with kids that have no sense of personal responsibility. Those kids then go around other people or go to school and do whatever they want because there are never consequences for them. I really doubt he was implying “beating” children, but if he was, then obviously, drop that man!
@HollyRoarborn9 ай бұрын
I agree. I also felt like he was talking more about him not being able to give consequences at all. I have read a lot of stories where a step-parent figure isn't allowed to discipline the kids at all because they're not the bio parent. If he was merely a boyfriend and is spending most of the day with this child, its completely possible that the girlfriend didn't allow him to parent at all and that probably got frustrating.
@youknowwhat99119 ай бұрын
I saw it as the mom never showing her son right from wrong, showing him consequences, or saying no. There are plenty of way to teach and discipline a child without abusing them. But idk ig many people think it’s either abuse or spoiling the child rotten

I’m so glad someone else pointed this out, extremes exist on either side, and the way he explained it sounds very much like the way-too-soft gentle parenting that does absolutely NOTHING to teach a child.

It's just that "gentle" is the keyword here that gave the impression that he would beat a kid.
@Hyenalowena8 ай бұрын
@@bluebreenah, the term gentle in parenting isn't about violence or not, it's the way you talk to them and teach them. It's meant to give them critical thinking skills and autonomy in making good choices when done right. Keyword though is "right" because a lot of people say they're gentle parents when what they mean is that they're a doormat and let their kids rule the house. And it very much sounds like Tristan was describing the latter, and he wasn't cool with that.

For Tristan's case, gentle parenting can often go too gentle. My boyfriends neighbors are gentle parents and they kinda let go of their kids in general. They don't teach them to be calm at certain points or to use inside voices or to not try to peek over the fence into others backyards etc. Those kids are screaming and rioting all they and they never say ANYTHING. Only when one gets hurt they come in and do they lecture them about their behaviour and safety? No. They go "oh my baby come to mommy lemme kiss your booboo". One could kill the other and they wouldn't lecture or anything they would go "oh baby were you scared? Are you okay? It's okay mommy is here!" Like don't yell at your kids but damn step up and give them a stern talk at some points Edit: "that's just neglect" I know that, but that's what the parents call gentle parenting. Their excuse is they need to see how the world works for themselves and learn how to deal with it alone. These kids are 3 and 5 btw!

I 1000% get where Great Value Drake is coming from when it comes to disciplining children who aren't yours-it can be a very tricky thing. "Discipline" doesn't always equal corporal punishment, it can be something as simple as verbally correcting a child, putting them in "time-out," taking away certain privileges, etc. So, I'm almost certain what he was getting at is that-being that he was at home with his exes child all day long-he was apprehensive about what his role was as an authority figure. If the child is acting out and being unruly, is it within his right to use his better judgment on how to correct the child, or does he just let the child run all over him because he's not the child's father? It's a tough spot to be in, for all parties involved.

yes he should be allowed to discipline … in a manner that’s in line with the parent’s wishes. gentle parents don’t NOT discipline, they choose to not do it physically- speaking of, physical discipline is known & proven to cause trauma and negative effects in children. talking to them like adults is shown to have longer behavioral impacts & allows children to UNDERSTAND their mistakes rather than just being afraid of their parent. no person should be “allowed” to hit a child. especially not one that isn’t their own.

@gabeminson right but i feel like (from the way he said the kid was spoiled) she wasnt a gentle parent she wasnt disciplining
@gabeminson9 ай бұрын
@@ghostsontrains7629 ehh to be honest w u i’ve found that most ppl who aren’t trauma informed will think gentle parented children are difficult/misbehaving when in reality they require more patience than the person is willing to provide . to me calling a child “spoiled” is very very rarely actually accurate- as adults it’s easy for us to look at a child and judge their behavior but they are just acting out of self preservation + whatever values they’ve learned in life. children aren’t capable of fully encapsulating the gentle parenting effect (ie communication) until they’re older because children are just not capable of the same level or depth of communication that we are. that doesn’t mean they’re bad, or spoiled, or that the parent is doing smth wrong.

Juuuuuust for the record, there is often a discrepancy between people with kids and their new partners (not brand new, whoever they are moving forward in their life with, you know, moving in with or marrying or whatever) as far as discipline goes. A lot of people with kids don’t think their partner should discipline their child ~at all~, no matter what, even if it’s telling them not to jump on a bed or sending them to their room for something. I don’t know if that was Tristan’s issue, but it was definitely mine in a past relationship, so I get feeling awkward about maybe wanting to tell the kid to be quiet when he’s working or send the kid to their room or something, and maybe his ex didn’t like that. 🤷🏻
@mandymagnolia19669 ай бұрын
And I was also thinking there’s a difference between gentle parenting with discipline (like being stern or having rules/boundaries) and gentle parenting that leads to a spoiled child ya know? It also almost seemed like the relationship may have been a “well you work from home so you have time to watch my kid” kinda deal which could have put a strain on the discipline thing too.
