►The Caligula Effect: Overdose is a Japanese RPG starring a group of high school students (the "Go-Home Club") trapped in a world where desires become reality. This remake of 2016's The Caligula Effect for the PlayStation Vita adds new characters, more dungeons, revamped graphics, and a whole new route where you play alongside the core villains, the Ostinato Musicians.

Thank you so much for your kind words!! I appreciate it as always! I think if you like Persona, you’ll appreciate what The Caligula Effect: Overdose is trying to do. I don’t think Caligula Overdose holds a candle to Persona 5, but it has some clever mechanics for its battle system. It’s flawed, but playable, for sure!

Wow, I get a double Panda dose this week (enjoyed you on Talk Nintendo!). The battle system looks really nice, like Frozen Synapse but a JRPG. Great review as always Mr Panda! I hope you get to 1,000 subs soon btw, you're so close!

Yesss, I'm so excited about being so close to 1,000 subs, and I hope I reach the milestone soon! :D I truly appreciate it, and I'm also so happy that you enjoyed me on the podcast! I hadn't heard of Frozen Synapse before looking it up now, but its simultaneous tactical gameplay does remind me of The Caligula Effect: Overdose, but hopefully without as much grinding. I still overall liked the game despite its repetition because the battle system was so innovative. I also dug the J-pop and anime characters haha!

Mr. Panda yeah Frozen Synapse is more like Syndicate (from the early 90s) but the action all happening at the same time makes me think of it, it’s cool. Fingers crossed that March will be the month you hit 1,000!

This is also an anniversary month for me, so it would mean a lot to me! :D I like the idea of games like that with real-time strategy that you can simulate beforehand. It makes the action feel fast-paced, but still tactical and manageable.

I'm sure I will. I haven't played a video game since modern warfare ww2 on ps4... It was fun...but I just haven't checked anything out..maybe I'll check this one out. This seems like a deep game haha

ArdelleVision Awesome! Yeah, depending on what your tastes in games are, I could try to lead you in a direction to some game recommendations! I will say The Caligula Effect: Overdose gets deep and dark with some of these character episodes and storylines. A similar series that delves into these character arcs is Persona, which I also recommend. The writer for Caligula Overdose also wrote some of the Persona games, and the latest game Persona 5 is excellent!

Awesome review! Seeing this game makes me want to shout "Persona!" I'm a fan of JRPGs in general and I just recently got into the Persona series. I like the idea of uncovering your party member's dark backstories, but I'm not a big fan of dungeon crawling. At least not dungeon crawling without something to break up the monotony. The repetition of everything would turn me off to wanting to trudge through this long game. The battle systems sound pretty cool and I wouldn't mind dabbling in different strategies. Too bad having a new villain route doesn't really affect most of the story in a significant way. If you're going to have alternate paths, then make them count--like Detroit: Become Human! Now that game forces you to commit. Anyways, The Caligula Effect: Overdose looks pretty on the surface but seems like it lacks the depth that similar games have. Great job!

Thank you so much for your wonderful words of support and encouragement! It all truly means a lot! :D The Caligula Effect: Overdose definitely reminds me of Persona, and for good reason. But Caligula Overdose is definitely its own beast, and I really like the Imaginary Chain battle system. I wish everything else around it were better, but eh. Until Persona 5 hopefully comes to Switch, this is a decent alternative. Though once that hits, I definitely can't wait to play through it since P5 for PS4 is still unfinished... Joker in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will satiate me... PERSONA!!! I mean, CALIGULA!!!

This review was actually very helpful for me as i was on the fence of picking this up, I always heard great things about persona but since it hasn't been on a nintendo console I never got the chance to play it so I considered this but it seems to have some big shortcomings that I feel would turn me off and prevent me from wanting to complete the game like the battling, tedious dungeons and layouts. So I'll just have to hope those persona 5 rumours to the switch are real so I can finally try the series haha. Great review Mr.Panda!!

I'm very happy my review helped you Koolaid! :D Having played both The Caligula Effect: Overdose and part of Persona 5, I can easily say that Persona 5 is way better than Caligula Overdose. I tried not to compare the two too much in my review, but P5 has much better dungeon design, music, characters, and the battle system is just as good. Caligula's strengths of its Imaginary Chain battle system and deep, dark character episodes are also aspects that Persona does well. But in Caligula Effect's case, those positives are surrounded by tedious dungeons and oddly implemented systems. I'm hoping P5 does come to Switch, for sure. I'd definitely pick it up again!

Man this game looks pretty cool, though I'm sorry to hear that the dungeons and fighting can get repetitive fast. I'll probably just get into persona if I decide to get more into turn based JRPGs. Great review my friend!

I truly appreciate it man!! :D Yeah, if you ever want to get into a JRPG that's like The Caligula Effect: Overdose, I highly recommend Persona 5. Although Caligula Overdose isn't a bad game, it's repetitive, so if you're not already in love with the formula, it may be a slog to get through. Persona 5 has a lot of charm and variety. They're different games, for sure, but within the genre, I prefer Persona.

I've heard someone describe this as Persona meets Angel Beats and your description of the plot seems to reinforce this! I'd definitely like to check this game out at some point since it seems interesting enough.

I"m not sure whether the adaptation is good or not, as I've only seen the first episode, but it seems to add more character development and backstory.

@@MrPanda2002 If you check Angel Beats out then I'm pretty sure you will like it as it is one of those anime that is looked at fondly by the majority of people :) And you know, that sounds familiar! I think I might have skipped out on watching it because it said it was based on a game and I had considered checking the game out first.

Wannabe Reviewer I definitely have to add Angel Beats to my queue! I hadn’t heard of the Caligula anime before playing the game, but now I’m not surprised it exists since there are Persona anime too. Based on the first episode, the show has the same J-pop. Unless the anime adapted the game horribly, it might even be a better way to experience Caligula if you wanted to avoid the dungeon crawling and grinding haha.

You know, Digiheads and all, I think I’d try to stay in Mobius... I like the characters, and clinical visual style, and would probably really dig this as an anime. It’s a shame it’s so repetitive, watching the video, I kept thinking it looked like the big Team Rocket level in every Pokemon installment but extended over an entire game. Speaking of which, I hope they do μ two in the sequel. (I bet I’m the 700th person to make this joke).

Hahaha I resisted so hard to do a Mew joke! (by the way, did you see that new Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution trailer with the 3D visual style?!) I like your Team Rocket comparison, and I imagine that one of these days, Giovanni will make his own Vocaloid Pokémon and let the entire cast live out their dreams. Then, Ash might actually become a Pokémon Master! In all seriousness, I overall liked where The Caligula Effect: Overdose was going but wish it weren’t so repetitive with its gameplay and design. Definitely look into Persona if you want similar themes, at least of high school characters overcoming their struggles. With Joker from Persona 5 coming into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, it may be required playing for us all haha!

I'm glad they're FINALLY remaking Metwo Strikes Back in glorious CG-3D! This is a story that needs to be retold to a new generation every 20 years. Btw, are they remaking Pikachu's Vacation? Because if not, why are we here?

Peter Ritt I’m not sure if Pikachu’s Vacation is also getting the remake treatment, but if it is, it better include Vitamin C’s “Vacation!” Vacation’s where I wanna be. Party on the beach where the fun is free. We don’t need a holiday, it’s time to celebrate. Given the new 3DCG look, they might as well make a game version of Mewtwo Strikes Back. It could be an action game where you have to fight all the Pokémon clones. Seeing the trailer inspired me to use Mewtwo more in Smash Bros. Ultimate. I forgot how floaty and difficult he is to use...

I like the concept and use of colors. Kind of DotHack like is what I take away from watching this game.

Good call! I haven’t played .hack, but I watched multiple of the anime series. I definitely can see the comparison with the concept and bright colors. The Caligula Effect: Overdose has that trapped in a Matrix game storyline too, and the colors during battle remind me of how the Internet is portrayed in things like .hack or in movies like Summer Wars or the Digimon movie.

Great review, as usual! Finally a game we disagree on though, if only by a bit. My own review should be uploaded later on today, and mentions most of the same downfalls as your own. Where we differ is I found the core cast for the most part to be one-dimensional, with all dialogue and interactions being driven by their underlying trauma. I thought the over-arching story was intriguing enough but the individual players just felt disjointed. That 3+hour musical loop though...yikes, so hard to keep playing with audio on!

I definitely see the cast being one-dimensional, but I did like their backstories and character episodes. It’s interesting since I wasn’t as fond of the overarching story but more so the individual characters and you the other way around haha! But I’m glad we can both say that looped upbeat J-pop made it so hard to keep The Caligula Effect: Overdose’s audio on without going insane haha! I really like that first song in the school, but can we at least have its full version and not just a single looping verse?! :P

For instance, I KNOW there are people out there who will love the fact that there are over 500 students to "collect", but I saw very little reason to talk to any of them! My personal favorite was the almost metal-like track in the spa level, but even that got old quickly when you get such a short loop!

Jace Glover Oh my gosh yes! The 500 characters to befriend is so odd. I get that it’s a feature, but it felt to me like being able to capture 500 Pokémon, but they’re all Pidgeotto. Also, you already have a team of like 9 fully evolved Pokémon haha. There are neat ideas in The Caligula Effect, but it could have been executed better to appeal to more than the most hardcore completionists. I liked that song in the spa area too, but we had to sit through that looping outdoor mall song for 4 hours first hahaha! XD

@@MrPanda2002 the mall area is so boring! Your Pokemon reference is absolutely perfect, too! I wouldn't even go so far as to say Pidgeotto though because all the side NPC's don't even have the full skill set. More like finding 500 Rattata!

Jace Glover Thanks! And you have a point! In retrospect, Pidgeotto is too kind a comparison for weak generic party members. 500 Rattata it is! It’s early Pokémon Go all over again. XD And yeah, that mall area bugged me so much. I was hoping that it would just get better from the initial school dungeon, but then, bam Papiko!
