As a Canadian I am ashamed how we treated the Inuit peoples and their beautiful dogs!

I don't understand the cruelty of humans to enable themselves to kill something so innocent, like a dog.

Stop showing me big dogs to fall in love with! I already want Huskies, St. Bernards & Great Pyrenees, and now Ovcharkas and these?!!!

It was the hatred for the native inuit people that drove the slaughter of these magnificent dogs. It was done in an effort to hurt and isolate the inuit people by striking at the heart and soul of the people.

They are gorgeous! And what a great woman, Rachel. Full of love about the breed and well informed about her breed. This was an amazing episode, thank you!!

I hope there are breeding programs being put into place for this breed. It has a long history and should be protected to get their numbers back up.

One of my neighbours had one of these dogs and their yard borders on a walking path. The dog lived outside with a huge dog house and it came over to play with everyone who walked by. It was scary because it was so huge and hyper, until you realized that it loved people. I think it made friends with everyone in the neighbourhood lol.

Love at first sight but tears in the eyes because of that sad beautiful history. I have an icelandic and a hungarian sheepdog - love the nordic and and ancient breeds.

The slaughtering makes me ashamed to be Canadian. Such a beautiful breed of dog. Typical government behaviour for that time.

Thank you Anneka for presenting that breed whom I never heard of before. Lovely dog. His fur is so silky. So sad, this culling in the '60s. I hope the breed recovers gradually and is back to Canada, his land of origin.

Intentional killing, shooting the dogs instead of enforcing was easier then apologizing after the fact does nothing to erase the senseless brutality that occurred not only to the dogs but to the Inuit ppl themselves. Thank God for ppl like Rachel for reigniting the interest in these dogs by wrkn with them, educating the masses about these beautiful dogs. Leave it up to evil humans to slaughter them. Ignorance is a disease, evil is the result.

I honestly hope these dogs can thrive again in many years to come. I really enjoy your content as I find this very educational and interesting about the history of the different dog breeds.

In 1980's I worked up in the Beaufort Sea and met one these beautiful dogs. I asked the owner a local hunter hired by my employer to be a lookout, about his dog thinking it was a Malamute. We talked for a while about how friendly these dogs are which turned out to be true😊 told me the sorry story about my Gov. atrocity. The dog was black grey and white but also Huge! And only 1 yr old. When we parted the dog was leaping and barking the owner dug in the heels of his snow boots said something the dog waved goodby and they took off like a shot over the ice. A great memory👍😎

They are extremely beautiful dogs but they definitely are not a dog for everyone. These dogs require a certain type of owner and a certain type of lifestyle. It's amazing to hear the story behind the Canadian government and what they did to these dogs and the Inuit people. The Inuit people were obviously treated much like the American Indians but it seems odd that it occurred in the 1960's and 70's. It seems like the Canadians would have learned from what the American government did many years earlier. To hear that this breed is down to under one thousand dogs worldwide is scary. Due to the breed requirements and the fact that they aren't as strong as an Alaskan Malamute or as fast as a Siberian Husky, it makes it difficult to find a purpose for them in the real world. Most people don't use a dog for sledding and hunting bears, etc., that along with the fact that usually aren't the best mannered house dogs, makes it difficult to find a quality home for these dogs. Hopefully they survive and thrive. 🙏🏼

My wife worked for the Arctic Trading Company in Churchill, Manitoba, Canada which is known as the Polar Bear capital of the world. Polar Bear viewing is a huge tourist business and is a large part of the local economy. The lady, Penny, who owns the Arctic Trading Company was the partner of a man who kept a pack of Canadian Eskimo Dogs in an effort to preserve the breed. There is a film that was made showing these beautiful dogs and the owner before his death. They were kept on the land in the traditional Inuit way and the film even features footage of a lone polar bear PLAYING with the dogs as if they are the best of friends. This happened with the dogs tethered in place on a short lead. One would think it would be a feast opportunity for a 1500 lb carnivore but the bear was only interested in friendship. Sadly the gentleman passed away four or five years ago. At last hearing, his partner was struggling to maintain and care for the pack with the help of local people.

I am so touched by this and the story of these beautiful doggies. That Wolfgang on the picnic table at the end was just too adorable and sweet. Love that boy. Thanks for bringing their story to light A. :) Johnny

I’ve known Rachael for years now and I can say that she is truly educated and soo knowledgeable when it comes to this gorgeous breed. I am also very excited to announce I will be dipping my toes into owning this breed so come March I will be flying out to get my little bundle of fur. I truly am grateful to be able and part of the beautiful preservation and education of the Canadian Eskimo/Inuit Dog community and lines! My mom has known these beauties for years, she has taught me much when it comes to the dog world but I am also well versed with SOOO much more educated and can’t wait to learn more about this breed!!

Which is what i wish the registered names was.. get rid of that word Eskimo, belongs with the "N" word. and put in Canada. Thank you for the history lesson. so insightful, really. Thank you for your respect of the Inuit peoples.

These fluffy teddy bear pups are like the amazonian dogs of the north: rare, big, muscular, strong, courageous, yet sweet and cute and soft like overgrown puppies. Safe to say I want one but my place is too small for them. One day.

If I'm right their blood line is different to other dogs as in different species of wolf and is one of oldest dog breeds ever! I like how she explained how the name Inuit is proper, and the other name derogatory. She absolutely loves the history before colonization, 1000-year evolution of the breed, and was honest about the Canadian government's atrocities with the breed and their relation to the history of how Canada came to be- she wants to protect the breed- well done!

Enjoyed watching ur video on the Canadian Inuit dog. Also found it very informative about the shameful n disgraceful acts of the Canadian government n the RMP killings of the breed in the 50s n 60s ! Before thought so highly of the RMP. Last few years hearing about that government's acts against the indigenous people of Canada and now their dogs too. Disgraceful

I have met at least 3 of these dogs ( maybe it’s because I used to live in Alaska but idk) and they are very friendly to kids but sometimes can be aggressive but it’s very rare and they are amazing dogs and WE NEED TO KEEP THEM ALIVE ❤

I think these low estimates of the numbers are coming from southern Canadian (and possibly American and UK?) breeders who want scarcity as a marketing ploy. There are plenty of dogs in most Inuit communities, and both Malemutes and Greenland dogs are basically the same (Inuit) breed (with some meddling of course from southern breeders).

My family's new rescue dog was brought to Ontario by a northern dog rescue from Kinngait Nunavut and she had a litter of puppies. One of her puppies recently had a DNA test to determine what breeds it's made up of and after getting the results we determined that our pup (the mama) is 14% unknown breed but the rest is German Shepherd and Canadian Inuit Dog. She is a gorgeous 42 pound almost entirely black pup and she resembles a small black wolf with Amber eyes but with a curly tail (when happy) She is an incredibly sweet, affectionate and very goofy girl

I remember working up North in the NWT in the eighties. Three thousand dogs and one thousand people. That summer all of the dogs were on the island and fed lake trout. Who knows what breed they really were. They were working dogs and outside of the community and away from people for the summer.

Being that I am a Canadian woodsman, I have been around trappers and the like, a lot. A lot of those guys just had 1 or 2 dogs that pulled a toboggan behind the snowshoeing trapper. One guy I met, somewhere off the Alaska highway, was riding a snowmobile for which he professed nothing but hatred. When I asked him why, he said that his dogs, when he had them, never missed a trap. They could smell them and knew where to stop. He also said they were good company. If 1 got hurt, he'd put that one on the sled and let the others pull. Worse came to worse, he could eat a sled dog. And he'd never seen a skidoo that could give him 13 baby skidoos in the spring. So, as we wasted my company's time around a campfire at -45 deg C., I asked him why use a skidoo? He replied that fur prices had gone down so far that he had to have such a long trapline, that dogs just weren't fast enough. The mindset is also that those traps have to be checked every so many days and the skidoo was just so much faster. But boy! Did that guy ever hate skidoos! Oh, and in general, siberians are too small and malemutes are too big. The Inuit dog is just right. And tougher. I remember how those Inuit felt when the dogs were killed, they grieved forever. We Canadians have done a lot of good things, but in reference to our native people, we haven't much to be proud of. As for me, I identify with them. I'm a white guy but regard the height of human technological development as having peaked at the snowshoe. And the sled dog. And the crooked knife. To be able to thrive at -50 deg. C, well, that's one tough man, and smart.

You are not giving credit where due. The person who almost single-handedly saved the breed is a Mr Carpenter, of Yellowknife, Canada. If you visit his kennels, you will find the true breed. The breed is perfectly adapted for harsh winters, strong, and can survive periods of fasting longer than any other breed. They are about mid-intelligence for trick shows, but excel in pulling sleds, where their strength and endurance are legendary. They are very fine pets, if you can run them regularly on trails and show them affection. They cannot be kept in a kennel.

I am so touched as I owned a Canadian Inuit (Eskimo) Sled Dog years ago, when I was younger. She (Mandy) was black and white and reminds me so much of a few of the dogs I see in the special; and very much like the black and white dog they have at the table with them who is well-behaved and friendly. When I was in my late teens, a female co-worker also in her late teens, Ann, asked if someone was willing to adopt one of her puppies and provide a good home for them. She said a woman breeder in Canada who was a friend of the family, gave her a male puppy and female puppy of this special dog breed for her birthday. Ann stated her mother would only let her keep one of the puppies. She relayed that these puppies were considered rare, they were registered, and she had papers for them. She stated they were an outside dog as they were accustomed to colder temperatures and would get overheated inside a house. She said even though the puppy that she was parting with was worth a lot of money, she was not going to sell it as it was more important for her that she find a good home. She said she would have to check out people's homes and interview the family before making her decision. Ann came to my home for a visit and interviewed my family with me, and she decided afterward on giving her Alaskan Inuit Sled Dog puppy to me. There wasn't a mean bone in Mandy's body. Mandy was good with cats and other dogs when she encountered them, and she was good with all people, the elderly and children alike. She liked to play tug of war, and she liked to interact and play period. Mandy would get excited when it started snowing. She would make "happy sounds" and do somersaults in the air despite being a fairly large dog. Mandy was the happiest when my Dad took her to Boy Scout Camp in the winter and let her pull boys on a sled. She required lots of brushing, especially when it got warm out and her coat was shedding. You could brush her for hours every day. My siblings helped out with brushing her out and washing her in warmer weather when she needed it. My Mom and Dad helped to take care of her. I would take Mandy for ice cream and to visit people. Mandy went down to our cottage with us, and was on the beach and water with us. She celebrated her birthday with my mother. Mandy was very protective of me, and there are many instances when she was like Rin Tin Tin and Lassie in one, when somehow she knew I was in trouble and came to my aid, or went and got help for me. I referred to her as my "Angel Dog." Mandy lived close to 14 years old, which my Veterinarian told me was quite a long time for a dog of her breed. He said these dogs are normally used as working dogs and usually only live to 7 years old. I loved Mandy very deeply and very much, and still do.
