My answer to the question: When does gear expire? is easy. Gear Expires as soon as it is broken and can't be repaired anymore. This is because the gear I use is in parts older than I am with my Nikon af 300mm f4 produced from 1987-2000 still renders great images, and my used d3 from 2007 still keeps up with my expectations as an enthusiast.

I have the 5d4 and the 1dx. The 1dx has a better sensor. Around 20mp is the sweet spot on full frame for high iso performance & image quality. Bigger pixels make it easier to get sharper photos at lower shutter speeds. With the new AI editing software available now, you can effectively push this camera's images to 36mp if needed. I've printed 30x40 with 8mp images from a 20D. If 18mp isn't enough you're too far away or doing something wrong.

I've noticed this with my Canon 6D. Performance in ISO is incredible. But suffers in sharpness due to the focus system and lack of MP in comparison to the MarkIV let's say. Still, a phenomenal camera that showcases the power of low light 20MP sensors.

I bought my 1D X in 2014 at full price and it was my dream camera (my version of a Ferrari for camera). I used it for a good 6 months and then life changed and my hobby took a backseat, my 1D X has only had about 15K actuations. Nothing ever really becomes obsolete, even after it breaks you can still use parts from other broken cameras to revitalise them, as I have with many cameras over the years. I'm still buying professional Canon film cameras from the 80s and 90s which are just as exquisite as the day they were manufactured. As for the 1DX, which I own, not only is it still in mint condition, it still takes perfectly decent photographs at 18 megapixels, which is the perfect size for anything you would ever want to print up to billboard size. Any sensor larger than that is compromised by noise due to the size of the area which light can fall on the individual pixel, meaning more in-camera noise reduction and more smeary images. :-)

It's good that technology progresses and its good that those who can afford to keep pace with it, keep buying these new products. It provides the second hand camera market where us less affluent people can buy the stuff when it becomes affordable. When our 'old friends' cease to work, we need replacements from somewhere! I'm an 80D, 7DII, 5DIV owner, all second hand, all do a great job and I love em to bits, mind you, I do use them with EF L glass!

Just made $600 in two photo shoots with a 1Dx and it worked very well. As someone who also used a pair of 1Dx III's and mirrorless the 1Dx is definitely not a dinosaur, it has most of the same functionality of the more modern iterations. While I think they are massive upgrades to the 1Dx, the 1Dx is still an extremely capable body and gets the job done very well. At the price point I think it is one of the best values for a pro body you can get.

There's no such thing as an obsolete camera. Even 35mm is not obsolete. Most people, including photographers, cannot tell the difference in an image taken with a 16mp camera vs a 36mp camera. Higher mp is good for better crops.
@PhilippensTube
@PhilippensTube Жыл бұрын
The 1D series of cameras are not your usual run of the mill consumer products. At the time when they were produced, they represented the pinacle of professional photography. That's why I could happily use an ancient 1D Mk1 (4MP CCD sensor!) for some time for live concert photography. AF speed was ridiculous. For instance, I used a Sigma EX 28-70 F2.8 lens and some people on a photography forum complained about this lens being slow. I said that I didn't notice anything slow or inaccurate about it. In the end I organized a meetup where people brought their cameras and lenses and people could try out different lenses and bodies to see if it was any good for them. What some of them noticed, was that the same lens on an 1D was significantly faster than on another Canon body. Often, I didn't even chimp at the screen to check if I got the image. I could just trust the AF to function, under any circumstances (obviously, sometimes at a badly lit concert, it could hunt at times). Sure, more modern cameras have more gizmos, but in the end you don't need any of those if you know your stuff. Now I'm not an old fart saying you shouldn't buy a new camera. Please do, if you have the money and are willing to spend it. But if you don't want to spend $2-3000 on a camera, you could easily pick up a used 1Dx and have some cash for a decent lens left in youyr pocket. Unless you really need the features of the new generation of cameras. If you're more into videography for instance, you'll want to stay away from this one. But pure photography shouldn't be any problem with this camera. The 1D I got back in the day could do 8 frames/s and just had 4MP CCD (CMOS wasn't fast enough in 2001 for this camera) but it was the main camera for sport and photojournalists back then in 2001. So if you have a F1 car coming at you at 250kph and you can shoot it on AI servo continuous shot and still keep it in focus, what's there that you can't shoot with a 1Dx? In what way it will be insufficient? And I mean that in a context of an enthousiast photographer who wants to play with a pro-grade camera and experience how such a beast works. One warning: you'll be spoiled the moment you start working with it. I know I was when I got my 1D.

Bought one for about $1350 and another for about $600 on MPB and they are our primary bodies with a 5D3 for backup. We shoot weddings and don't even worry about how high the ISO gets. One has over 400k and the other around half that. Our reason for upgrading from the 5D3's was that canon really screwed up the SD card write speed and shooting raw to both cards is mandatory for my piece of mind as I've had cards fail. Two 64 gig cards and you can shoot til the battery is dead since 18MP just doesn't take up that much space. Speaking of batteries that's the main downfall here, canon made it so aftermarket batteries won't show you the percentage left, but we have yet to run out of battery during a wedding. Paying nearly a hundred bucks for a used canon brand battery is a stick in the eye after years of buying dirt cheap LP-E6's, but the powerextra brand batteries are like 20 bucks a pop so we keep a few around anyway. The main reason I want to upgrade from here is to have dual pixel AF, which makes the 1Dx2 the obvious successor once their prices come down. Maybe after we've gotten the goody out of a pair of mark II's we can finally afford R3's and RF glass!

@@ChrisBermudo - Not an issue on battery life for sports, but it depends on constant usage. I have shot two football games back to back and close to 2,600 images. I use both slots with 64 GB cards for room. I do set the camera to go into standby or off from the menu in 2 or 4 minutes so that batttery time is not conummed when not in use. Shooting video will drain the battery faster as the camera stays active when in live view. The Canon LP-E-19 battery is best to buy as a backup. This way should you upgrade to a DX2/3 or R3, your set with that battery. In all cases, I do carry a spare battery when on a shoot. Because I shoot with multiple Canon cameras, I can swap batteries into the camera I need the additional shooting time. Hope this helps.

Agreed. One thing people forget is that the whole 1D series represented the pinacle of photography at the time the were sold. You can't just compare it to any other camera that's a bit newer. Chances are that the 'dinosaur' is at least at the same level. I had a 1D Mk1 for a few years. Go a 5D Mk1 when that came out because I wanted to shoot full frame, but the AF on the 5D was terrible. Sure, I could easily shoot at a higher ISO, but apart from the sensor, the 1D was superior to the 5D Mk1. Obviously, if I'd win the lottery, I'd buy a 1Dx Mk3 with all the nice lenses, but right now I'm looking to get a nice used 1Dx and have lots of fun with it.

All my cameras are used cameras as the lenses as well. All my cameras accept EF Canon glass. Even my squirt a6400 Sony. My a7Rii, and a7ii get the action when I don't need compact full frame solutions where I don't the the reach, and low light is in play though my a6400 is no slouch same with the 1D mk4. Getting the best again for you means leveraging previous technology that is still sound today. I held and shot a Nikon Z9. Most capable camera for today. @@tomaskoeck I would disagree that 1080P is not industry standard. Most TV stations around the world broadcast in either 1080p or 720p. Mostly streaming services like Netflix, amazon and KZfaq you have 4K. And many productions are still producing in 1080P because those cameras mostly have better light sensitivity. What makes a camera broadcast or Netflix industry standard is the codec and different companies have different demands on what codecs is required. And I do believe that 90% that watch youtube videos on their phones or laptop would not think of the difference. And also SD480/576i is also a industry standard. So for me, it is more important how the colors, moire and noise is than if it is 1080p or 4K. But I do see the limit of 30 frames a limit. Many times I would shoot 50frames

i bought a 1dx at the end of 2020, and so stupidly sold it couple months later cause i needed the money. That was my biggest regret. I’m thinking of buying it again this year. But I have a imperative decision to make between 2 specific cameras since both are super affordable now. Should I still get the 1dx or the 5dsr? Help 😭

Honestly this sounds like me, I bought a 5D Mk.II in 2014 and ended up selling it in 2015 for the money. Have always regretted it. But back when I bought the 5DII my dream camera was the 1DX so now they’re as cheap as the 5DII was then I figured I’d pick one up. Gear doesn’t expire. In fact I’m a firm believer in using older equipment. The savings are incredible and equipment doesn’t get worse

Relevant today???? I still use this camera for ALL commercial work. It has always been solid and IQ is very acceptable for work going into the future. I will never sell it as its made $$$$$ for me. In all my years of commercial work, I have never ever to this day have a client ask me about the megapixels. Clients don't care, they want an image, you either deliver it or you don't. Simple process.

Why it could not work as good since new? It will always work as well in the same way than brand new. New mirrorless it doesn’t make this gear work in the wrong way

Exactly, it doesn't matter how old a camera is, if it still works you can make great images with it, especially flagship models like the 1D series

Being a camera from 2012 is not that long. The problem with the modern consumer is his/ her interpretation of time is because of such an advent of new tech things become obsolete very quick it’s nonsense. If you live this way all your doing is following the world. It’s a headless chicken mentality.

It's 2022 and 1DX was initially first introduced on June 20 2012, so how did you arrive at "15 years in age" if it's been only 10?
@shaunengler9740
@shaunengler9740 2 жыл бұрын
Because I needed a part , the toggle switch on it went missing, the canon guys said cameras older than 15 years old have no parts left . That’s what they told me. The lying suns of bitches / buggers.

I can't wait till words like obsolete and relevant become obsolete and irrelevant on youtube ;). All camera gear works just as good as the day it was produced. Relevance has everything to do with the job you need to do, and it will only become obsolete when photography completely dies.

Never does. Especially lenses. You are the limit, not the gear. It is so easy to get the flavor of the month. Obsolete means your imagination ran out. Not the gear's capabilities. Marketing hype is about selling products. So is KZfaq. Wake up people. No such thing. I use even an old Olympus E-10 from 2000! If you are not a professional being paid, any camera that fits you will do. Don't get caught up in the new BS. This camera was made for the pros in the day. Still great for anyone today. I have a 1D mk.4 and I am looking at a 1DX, but taking my time. Want a plastic piece of the schiit for the same price new for this used? Your choice. Make a good one.

Error of thinking. Hobby photographers want the latest and greatest. A pro wants to earn Money Not spend 8k every 2 years in a camera. They use it until IT Breaks in Most cases. Otherwise they not making Profit and Go bankrupt
