This issue has been fixed with the latest firmware 1.4.0. I tested it with the Laowa 15mm f2.0 lens and Laowa 33mm f0.95 lens, both of which are fully manual lenses. The camera works great now, I was getting tired of switching the IBIS off and on again through the quick menu every time I turned the camera on with a manual lens on it.

One workaround for long time Canon EF users is to switch to Panasonic Lumix. The sigma EF to L Mount adapter works great with all EF glass. Plus, with the S5II now having PDAF, you can make use of all that excellent glass with great autofocus!

Canon's decision to close down the RF system to their own lenses, and to actively prohibit other companies from backwards engineering electronic RF lenses (lawsuite against Samyang), is so very sad. And neglecting bugs like this one goes in line with that strategy: actively discourage the use of any third party lenses or EF lenses - steer people towards the mega expensive Canon RF lenses. I wanted to switch from Sony to Canon because of superior ergonomics and user experience, but this is the one thing that made me double down on Sony instead - at least they are enabling a great selection of cheap third party lenses, and they listen to their users!

Excellent video. Thank you. I think it’s obvious with Canon’s announcement a few months ago that they were prohibiting third party manufacturers from producing lenses for the R series cameras, that Canon does not value consumers. Several months ago I purchased an IRIX 45mm lens to use on the R7 and it would not display any aperture setting, whether in AV, TV or Manual. I spoke to B&H and called Canon Service center on Long Island, and they were both in the dark as to why it was happening. I finally contacted IRIX and after a week they told me that Canon had changed their firmware without notifying Irix. That’s why the lens would not work. Irix said that they would be releasing a compatible version of the lens, but then Canon made their announcement regard third party manufacturers, so I don’t know if the issue was resolved. Canon has a history of shortchanging consumers. I like the R7 but don’t trust Canon to do the right thing by consumers. Their attitude is reprehensible.

I’ve noticed with the R6 that ibis performs less well with manual lenses, it’s classic Canon cripple hammer. More noticeable with longer lenses. I have the EF 135 F2 non stabilised lens and it’s great with the R6 stabe. However my adapted contax zeiss 135mm 2.8 is noticeably less good even when you manually enter the focal length. My old Sony a7sii stabe is miles better with any manual lens you throw at it and that’s an 8 year old camera! I don’t believe any BS about incompatibility with manual lenses. A 135mm is a 135mm at the end of the day.

I wonder if some of the issue is focal distance? With an EF or RF lens, the lens is also sending the focus information to the camera. Subjects closer to the camera would require more stabilization than subjects further away to infinity.

@@matthewsinger yeah that might be the issue but I still go back to how ibis works on my A7sii, it’s miles better with manual lenses. It’s not even close and that’s one of the early ibis cameras. I’d wager Canon are ‘at it’ - they’ll do everything to keep you buying their lenses.

I think Canon is having some sort of internal conflict that is preventing them from making a cohesive business plan going forward. Its too bad, they make great stuff when they get it all together. Sony sometimes makes not so good stuff but then they listen to customers, fix it, and then have great stuff too. I like that. It shows good business sense and long term commitment. I can't decipher Canon's plan. Today, we are pushing $10,000.00 for a top camera and one good lense. I want to understand the company I buy from.

I was also excited about the Canon R7 initially. I even purchased a Canon Speedbooster 0.71x to use with some EF lenses, which potentially have better image quality on the R7. However, I noticed that when using the Speedbooster, there are abnormal IBIS (In-Body Image Stabilization) issues with zoom lenses. For example, when I mounted the EF 24-70mm f2.8 lens, whenever the focal length displayed is below 24mm, the IBIS becomes completely ineffective. You can refer to my video at the timestamp 19:42 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fLmAo8Z_yq-1lGQ.html I also tried the EF 16-35mm lens, and similarly, the IBIS fails completely when the focal length goes below 16mm. However,when using prime lenses like the 50mm or 35mm, I don't experience this issue at all. This problem is truly frustrating. Currently, there are very few RF-S lenses available, and the third-party options for EF-S lenses (such as Sigma) are quite outdated. Essentially, there are hardly any suitable lens choices for the R7, which is disheartening.

I got R7 body and first lens was Helios 77M-4 (50mm 1.8), IBIS was set to 50mm by default (first time I turned on the camera without any electronics). I use EF AF confirmation chip with EF-RF adapter and that tells camera it's 50mm and 1.4. If there was a way to program these chips, would at least resolve many issues with M42 lenses and alike, of course fix from Canon would be the best. Edit: Just found out there are programmable EF chips, I ordered some and will set them to 28mm, 35mm, 135mm as 50mm seems to be "default".

Mark, Interesting (really, discouraging) that Canon hasn't been willing to address that. I wonder if it's their way, somewhat passively, to discourage users from using third party lenses. I've owned an R7 now for about two months. I bought it as a replacement for my 77D for stills photography. The issue that I experience and which I think lots of enthusiast users will experience, is the blurring of images caused by shutter shock when either the mechanical or first-curtain shutters are used. So, we're left having to use electronic shutter and deal with the reduced dynamic range and image warping that comes with that. Major bummer. I also had to send the camera back when it froze up. Canon reported they had to replace the motherboard. That doesn't actually inspire confidence in the company.
@matthewsinger
@matthewsinger Жыл бұрын
Shutter shock shouldn't be an issue with Electronic first curtain. The shock is from the mechanical shutter closing just before opening up as the image recording begins.

@@matthewsinger Matt, Thanks, i’ll try it again. In full mechanical shutter, the shutter has to first close and then open. This was less of an issue in DSLRs because the shutter started out in a closed state, though the movement of the mirror and the opening of the first curtain could cause vibration. I'm not sure what the advantage of a mechanical shutter is with mirrorless cameras. Electronic first curtain is optimal, and full electronic is fine when rolling shutter isn't an issue or when silent shooting is necessary.

I know you told Canon you were using a 3rd party lens, but what would their excuse be if you were using one of Canon's EF Cine lenses? Canon does not even have RF Cine lenses! I was fed up with Canon when I owned a 5D Mark IV and their *only* solution for me to pay to upgrade to have C-Log was to send my camera away for up to 2 weeks to have *a firmware upgrade* performed at one of their 2 remaining service centers in the US. Then, as a 1DX Mark II owner, there was no option even available to add C-Log to that camera! If I get into the mirrorless space, I will be looking at Nikon, Panasonic, and Sony before I ever touch Canon there.

It should be obvious, Canon does not give a hoot about your old EF and EF-S lenses and sure the heck not about third party lenses. Canon wants you to buy new Canon lenses. The bug may or may not be deliberate. I am seriously thinking After shooting Canon Camera for four decades and tens of thousands of dollars in buying Canon bodies and lenses to drop my loyalty and switch to Sony for my next body. Sure won't buy an R7. The tighter Canon's grip on customers, the more photographers will slip through their fingers. I am truly saddened Canon has turned their back on us and deliberately made their gear not compatible with a multitude of great vintage glass we own. At retirement age, I am not spending that kind of money starting over. So over my next 30 years there will be no more new Canon cameras for me. I'm not sure if this is an IBIS problem or a focus problem. But when taking stills of wildlife with the R7, it is essential to take a BUNCH of shots for each image. Why? Because, even at f/8 or f/11, the focus "wobbles." In a string of three images taken at the same time with a single shutter button push, two of the images will be focused very slightly ahead or behind the desired focus point and one (maybe) will be properly focused. To be safe, a stills shooter should take 7 or 8 images with each shot. (But no more than that, because the R7's buffer is tiny.) It's a frustrating camera. When it performs well, it is amazing. But the IBIS / focus stability is a problem that should never be present in a camera at any price point. Mobile phone cameras don't have this issue!

Apparently Canon has given up on the efm system - both the m6 mkii and 32 1.4 are shown to be discontinued. But I recommend that you enjoy what you have, as discontinuation of production does not render the camera or lens you have on hand useless. After I sold my m6 mkii I discovered that the rp and r7 are not perfect either. The former lacks a fully mechanical shutter and a fully electronic shutter, and has a shutter speed limit of 1/4000s. The latter is even more lacking in lenses than the efm system, and there is such a vicious bug that degrades the manual lens experience.

For what it's worth, I've had the R7 for about two months and have tried several EF-S lenses with it, FOR STILLS PHOTOGRAPHY ONLY. The wide angle 10-18, 60mm macro and 24mm STM all produce quite good results, image quality wise. The IBIS seems to be working with those. The 55-250 STM just isn't a good enough lens for the 33 mp sensor. But in my mind, that's not an IBIS issue, but rather the very difficult demands being placed on the lens optics by the sensor. To be honest, I regret buying the R7. I've commented above on the issues I'm having with it. But I checked on the selling price if selling it 'near new' to KEH, and they only offer a quite low $900. That may be the biggest testimony to how the market is receiving the camera now that a number of people have it and are using it. Best of luck with your camera search. Craig C.

Canon has become a totalitarian company. Yeah, a weird thing to say. But it seems more and more their actions are out of Klaus Schwab's book and reflect "We'll give you what we want you to get and you'll like it." I'm paying a lot of attention to other manufacturers. I'm absolutely never buying another Canon camera. The 3rd party lens thing is enough of their crap for me. They say "phuck ewe" and I say "no, phuck ewe."
@wellingtoncrescent2480
@wellingtoncrescent2480 Жыл бұрын
As an R7 user, I share your frustration, but I had understood that Canon's prohibition on 3rd party lenses was only meant to apply to autofocus lenses, at least according to Canon's initial press releases. More recently, they announced a licensing deal with Voigtlander, for a nifty fifty RF mount with autofocus. At the same time, they announced that licensing deals with other AF lens manufacturers would be processed on a "case-by-case basis". In the meantime, it certainly would be nice if "official" policy towards manual focus lenses trickled down to their support staff!
@jiahaoshi8434
@jiahaoshi8434 7 ай бұрын
The situation with the Voigtlander 50 f1.0 lens is slightly different. Canon announced that they will give the green light to lenses not provided by the Canon RF lens group to supplement the system's deficiencies. Canon has really treated the Voigtlander differently - this lens has electronic contacts to communicate with the RF camera. This means that the 50 f1.0 will automatically report the focal length to the camera body without requiring manual input from the user. But apparently the manual lenses that will get this treatment are still very few.

No one should be surprised that Canon isn't supporting crop sensor bodies as well as they should. They are one of the biggest pushers of the full frame cult, the "but muh full frame" crowd. RF is locked (rumors say it will be opened up recently, I'll believe it when it's real) and setup so that if you want a fast prime, you're spending more money than you should have to on bulkier FF glass. Even then it's only going to a non-standard focal length, which isn't the end of the world, but if you look at something like EF-M and primes, you get standard focal lengths more or less out of the 22mm and 32mm. Canon doesn't want to sell R7's, they want to sell FF bodies and the higher profit FF glass. It's a shame, but they don't care, crop bodies are just extra stepping stones they market to beginners to then be replaced by another body down the line sooner than is really needed. The R7 is strange in that what it offers would fall more in line for enthusiast and even non-programmed pro's. I would have an R7 if Canon would at the least let Sigma carry APS-C for them on RF. I would basically have an EF-RF adaptor on the R7 at all times if I used one. I have used a M6ii with EF lenses and almost opted to go that route as a for fun setup, to use my old and relatively recent EF lenses. If Canon didn't have such clear anti-consumer practices I probably would have got an R7 to go with my MFT kit as a side body, possibly even a main if I got the fast small/light native primes I would use for photojournalism.

No joke - after watching this video, my interest into the Sony Alpha system increased a lot, and now I'm looking into it as transition from my Canon camera and lenses. Canon's attitude just speaks for itself. Latest generation EOS mirrorless cameras have very few native lenses and all 3rd-party manufacturers are blocked unlike any competitor like Sony, Nikon, Panasonic, Fujifilm. But Canon's saving grace is with adapting older DSLR lenses. However, Canon had never invested much in their APS-C systems compared to other competitors. Their sharpest glass and highest-quality lenses have always been full-frame. EOS-M is a painful recent example - with only the 32mm Canon lens being sharp enough to utilise the full resolution of the M6 mkii. When I look back, I choose Canon because of their menu system and colour science. Sony was in fact at the bottom of my list solely because of their menu system. As a beginner, I just didn't want to fuss with frustrating ergonomics for very similar visuals and no real gain from my photographic experience. Now, considering the mid-long-term investment into a camera and lens system, Sony stands out for me. And I love Sony's dual-gain sensors with a degree of ISO invariance for shooting in the dark. So I'm looking forward to selling all my Canon gear one day for Sony gear.
