The Canter Transition: How to Fix a Horse that Rushes, Puts their Head up and Gets Tense!

The trot-canter transition is one of the most difficult transitions to master. The transition requires perfect preparation, balance, timing and feel to be executed seamlessly. Many of my students struggle with their horse coming above the bit, rushing, and getting tense in the canter transition. Here are some tips if you’re struggling with this transition:
1. Preparation is everything! Before asking for the canter, make sure that the horse is in front of the leg, on the bit, and correctly positioned away from the inside leg and into the outside rein with flexion to the inside. If the preparation is not correct, wait, don’t ask for the transition until it is.
2. Have the horse a little bit “extra round” before asking for the canter transition and prioritize keeping the horse round in the transition over making the transition happen the exact instant that you ask for it.
3. Make sure that the horse is correctly bending and off of the inside leg and into the outside rein before asking for the transition.
If the horse gets tense and starts to anticipate the canter transition, change directions, mix things up and wait for the horse to relax before asking for the canter transition.
4. Make sure that you, the rider stay relaxed and breathing in the transition. If the horse is getting tense, it is like the rider is too!

What's your biggest issue in the canter transition? For me it's always that the horses want to use three neck in the transition instead of lifting their back and withers in the transition.

The mare I ride gets super tense and like yours, uses the under muscles of her neck and not her back and hind end. This video really helped me!! Of course this is what my trainer tells me, like, every lesson, but it helps to hear it from a different person!

Amelia Newcomb Dressage I can’t get the correct canter lead when asking for canter against the wall. I always end up in counter canter (ie if the transition is at a or c). If it’s on a circle or in the middle of the arena however it’s fine? I’m not sure why it happens...

Preparation. Get the horse ready and the horse will do it. This is a good way to learn because you broke things down into small pieces. Great video.

My horse seems to get "too excited" ... We start to walk and trot at the start of the lesson, the pace if great and rhythmic. Once we have cantered once, it's so hard to get his trot balanced again. He then tends to just rush at every corner, anticipating another canter. He gets so heavy and strong in the mouth, even though my hands are soft. help!

an ongoing project for us. I see how here you stress that we must set our horse up for success for the canter transition. I think that is one of my issues....I feel the pressure to pick up canter at a certain time during a lesson [for instance] and then my horse just rushes and runs trying to get into the canter. its pretty frantic. This is a video I will re watch !!

Thankyou so much I've been avoiding the canter under saddle for a while due to rehabbing my horse and building the strength back up on the ground and under saddle at walk and trot, but I think now I'm avoiding it because of me :( not wanting him to go above the bit and get all anticipating and anxious, but watching you here has given me the push to go out and start getting our canter going good again.

With better preparation my horse and i achieved a much more balanced canter. We are both in rehab mode, me from a hip injury and my horse from a strained muscle, so this has been incredibly helpful.

very helpful and well explained. Have you done a video on how to tell the difference between a horse that is running in the trot, or just has a big trot? My mare I think falls into the little bit of both, but I don't want to stifle her expression by confusing it with running

Good question! Yes for sure you don’t want to stop the horse from going forward. So long as the horse stays in balance and uphill then I would say it isn’t running.

You might wonder why she rides this horse so much behind the bit (head tucked in off the vertical). Watching him, I think it also prevents any hollowing of his back, so a much smoother ride for both of them. Great video and v/o. Thank you Amelia

Thank you for this helpful video. I have a very nice 15.1 athletic little horse that I’ve ridden for 18 months. He came with a hot engine and he has come a long way learning to relax. Shoulder in has helped. He still gets fractious about canter and canter depart. I’ve found that I cannot warm up in canter before a dressage test because that blows whatever relaxation we have achieved. I know I can’t keep doing that for the long term. I will try these techniques but do you have any other advice for spicy-minded horses? Canter poles? I keep thinking it has to be insecurity? His owner gave him up because he was too hot.

Amelia; NOT trying to be a jerk; but my horse really does want to run off at canter; and the horse you are riding is the opposite; you are having to encourage him to go forward enough! I would love to see you do this topic on a horse that really tries to rush off and gets tense.

My horse likes to lean on my hands and 'tank off' in canter, I find it hard to keep him cantering uphill. I try to do good canter transitions and short distances before downward trot transition. Also stop and back. Is there anything you can suggest?

Depends on how green the horse is! But 3-4 steps of sitting trot before the transition is ideal!

My horse comes above the bit, if I have him lower before the transition I feel I would be stiff trying to hold him together, using too much muscle and then not so soft ...should it feel like that?

Good question! You need to get to where you can ride him a little lower and rounder without added pressure or tension before asking for the transition.

My horse from 9y.o throws it’s head up when I want to go from canter to trot and from trot to walking, i don’t change the pressure with the reins, but it also happens when I do change it. It also happens with long reins training and lunging training, tried so many option to fix it but still no solution 😔

Hi Elise, Since I can't be there to see exactly what is going on, I'm not sure exactly what is happening, but it sounds like your horse is losing connection and becoming unbalanced for downward transitions. This just might be a strength issue. Something you can try when doing downward transitions is putting your horse in a little shoulder fore or leg-yielding him out as you are transitioning between gaits. These exercises will help get is inside hind underneath him and connect it with the outside rein. Keep practicing, and eventually you'll get there!

So my coach for lessons tells me my mare does a “yee-haw” moment and sort of comes for a bit of a small rear and kicks off into the canter. She also head up rushes at times but with the “yee-haw” it takes me longer to transition down or do anything because I’m left behind. Any advice for that kind of thing?

Not sure if I’ll get a response but I need some help with my green kid. I had a BEAUTIFUL warmup flat but then the next time I asked for the canter he just bolted, and when I tried to encourage him to come down and into the bit he just went faster and faster and circling made him more tense. So I backed him off back to the trot and he just tried to run through me again. It took like 30 minutes for him to move into the bridle relaxed again

Hi there! I would practice walk, trot transitions and get him on your aids. Next add in adjusting speed in the trot. Add in the canter on a circle and think about pushing in and out of the circle to get him to relax

My biggest issue with the canter transition is that my horse cross fires with the back legs and then changes to the wrong lead this usually happens when I go to the right and I'm also trying to build his endurance as he rushes in the canter and If I ask him for a slow collected canter he will go back to the trot

HELP can someone please help me with my horse and cueing her!!! basically Gracie has a lot of issues. when she first got to the barn, you couldn't touch her sides, if u did she would literally buck you off. now she's better, but shes still very touchy. usually she's pretty good getting her correct leads without leg and j using my hands, but recently we have really struggled. also, I can't cue a flying change. I've tried numerous times, however it ends up in a fit because I try cueing with my legs. is it possible for me to cue without leg? She's very, very touchy

@@AmeliaNewcombDressage I actually have 2 green horses. One is a 6 year old OTTB that I purchased off the track who struggles with contact and balance. The other is a 11 year old Irish sport Horse who is a bit more balanced but is not highly educated because she was started at 9 years old. I have owned her since she was 9 and started her but it has been slow going because she has a mind of her own - who doesn't right? Would you like videos?

A horse that puts his head up and gets tense when being ridden is not a horse problem. It is a people problem. Think about it.

I really like the way you explain your thoughts and action plan. But I am worried to see that your horse is clearly behind the vertical 90% of the time. I‘d love to have you comment on that since I regard you as a role model for many many riders ,and we all should not want to spread the habit of seeing this and thinking it‘s okay or maybe even desirable. Thank you very much.

The correctness of the vertical is a progression. We are constantly aiming for correct self carriage, but it takes time and strength. My horses are never pulled into the contact by hands, you will hear me say very frequently that the hands are last. This is the opposite philosophy from Rollkur or BTV theories. When a horse lifts its back and begins roundness, they have to learn to go to your hand and that takes strength and engagement from behind. It is the ultimate goal, but it is never forced.

This is exactly the opposite of what that Clinton Anderson said to do. If his horse throws a head up, he yanks the poor animal round harshly in a circle and kicks him repeatedly in the belly. Clinton Anderson is not a horse trainer. He’s an abuser. He punished the horse for his terrible riding and accuses the animal of having a bad attitude. He sucks.
