The Sound of the Cape is a compilation album of the traditional music of the Malay people of Cape Town or Kaapse Klopse. For any Capetonian, the music conjures up images of brightly clad minstrel groups parading through the city for the Tweede Nuwe Jaar festival. The music is typically energetic and sung in Afrikaans. Choir harmonies are accompanied by string, brass and percussion instruments and performed while walking.

LINER NOTES
In 1939, the Cape Malay Choir Board was established and since then has grown from strength to strength. The present executive, under the very capable leadership of Mr A Panseray has made a fine achievement by bringing in its "Board Team" to world attention during their Netherlands tour in 1984. The "Sound of the Cape" has thus become international.
In launching this new series, it is hoped that in the comfort of your homes you will enjoy the memories of the Cape Malay Choirs' wonderful concerts. Here for the first time is a "live" recording of some of the highlights of the competition held at the Three Arts Theatre in Plumstead.
Our compliments go to those "unsung" heroes of the Cape Malay Choir Board, particularly to Messers Panserey, April, Ernest and Midge

My father alraham was in the Boarding Boys for 50+ years. Hoor Matroosies Hoor was his favorite lied and to find it here today really made me happy. Shukran so much for this upload.

Slm, Wardah. I came across your comment now was just wondering if you have any photos or documents of teams and members of back then.. that you could share perhaps. My fathers, father was with the Boarding Boys from the start plus he wrote the songs nederlands liedjies. Would be really grateful if I could share some of these thing with him.. Shukran, Wslm.

Its a traditional Cape Town (South Africa) sound. There is a large community in Cape Town that has Malay and Dutch influences.

Agreed, it's great! and here in cape town we get to see the minstrels sing and dance in the colourful street parade "Tweede Nuwe Jaar" (Second New Year) which takes place on Jan 2nd in the city centre. Big part of the tradition around here and a treat for all. thanks for watching

@@yogoprobro I take it you're not from the Cape Flats in Cape Town and merely sharing after converting it to mp3? Thank you for this. I shared it on FB groups. Just for those who don't know, there is a difference between this and minstrels (Kaapse klopse) where they wear satin outfits and have large brass bands. This is known as Malay choirs (Muslim Malay influence in the Cape) or Nagtroepe (they bring in the New Year in Cape Town by dancing in Bokaap) or Hollandse team (the Dutch influence you can hear in the songs) The songs Die Ruiter and Hoor Matroosies Hoor are Nederlands liedere. So it sounds like Afrikaans but if you read or listen carefully it's actually Dutch. Nederlands liedere or "liedtjies" are traditionally SEEVAART or MINAAR (songs about sailing or sailors crossing the oceans to be in Cape Town etc and minaar basically is a love song) I think that's the correct as that's been my understanding. I grew up with this as a kid and my uncle used to sing the comic or "moppie" and my dad used to sing solo. Then you get Nederlandslied and combine chorus.
