My local garage has a whole protocol for working fuel lines, including using an enclosed, grounded, pump line to remove as much fuel as possible before draining the rest, grounding the car, and the mechanic to avoid sparks. As a precaution, they layer a fire retardant absorbative chemical powder below the work area. Why? Because the guy who runs the garage is a retired NYFD Captain who does not take chances. He also does ATV repairs, and doesnt charge an arm, leg, and your first born to do it.

My first thought when I saw this video, was that I would siphon out almost all the fuel just outside of the bay, before putting the car on the lift. That way you should have little to no fuel left in the tank when the car is on the lift. I guess under the same circumstances as in the video, I would have still ended up with a fire, just with a lot less fuel to keep the fire going, once the fire extinguisher was in play. Grounding everyone would be the way to go in both locations.

A few years ago I had an electrical panel catch on fire on me at work (wasn't my fault). I ran around the corner and grabbed an extinguisher, checked it was an ABC and then shot it at the panel. To my horror it seemed to make it worse, so I shot it again and once again it made it worse. That's when I decided I had done all I could, pulled the fire alarm, ran up stairs to the buildings office and told the single employee to get out if the building. I went out front and turned the gas to the building off (I'm a gas fitter which is why I was in the building in the first place). 90 seconds later the fire trucks pulled up and the fire fighters had me show them where the electrical panel was. They had it out in 2 seconds with some type of different extinguisher I didn't have access to but only after they had killed power to the whole basement floor. They told me I had done everything correct but I never had a chance with the panel being live and the wimpy little extinguisher I had didn't help etheir. God bless these guys.

That flare up is exactly normal for an ABC fire extinguisher. Startled the heck out of me the first time I saw that. You have to keep up the stream despite the flare. It WILL work. Most commercial locations will have 10-pound ABC's. One 10-pound ABC is plenty for a 200-400 amp panel. The power doesn't have to be cut. The fuel is actually the insulation on the wires. ABC's work by smothering the fire by forming an oxygen blocking crust on top of the burning surface. They aren't actually very good for a deep-seated fire, like a stack of burning mattresses.

Turns out a sister store of ours in another state burned down the last time she bought the print and left it to get framed. Luckily, I was able to reassure her that it'll be okay and she did get her framed print without our building catching a case of the catastrophes. But we frame stuff ranging from nothing to thousands and thousands of dollars... a lot of stuff literally irreplaceable. It's the stuff people take with them when they get evacuation notices for a reason. The idea of a fire is my worst work nightmare, and my 2nd worst nightmare is the sprinklers going off.

Here's my story: I was in school to become an aircraft mechanic. In those days, the curriculum hadn't advanced much since about the 1940s. They still had a section on how to build a plane using wood, dope, and fabric, which is how they used to do it in the Wright Brothers' days. Everyone in the class had to build a small section of wing using these materials. The instructor wanted to demonstrate how flammable dope is, so he took one student's wing section and flicked his Bic. The wing section went up in flames faster than a marshmallow on a stick. Unfortunately, he did this demonstration in the paint shop. In what seemed to be seconds, the whole paint shop was in flames. Everyone got out without getting hurt, but it was still a shame. I thought this was one of the coolest instructors at this school. I have no idea where he was working the next day.

I’m a mechanic and in 2008 I was in the back seat of a car that was on the hoist and myself along with two workmates were removing a fuel tank due to a leak. Unfortunately the car caught fire from a similar static situation, only I was inside the car holding the top end of the siphon hose in the tank. Scariest day of my life. I wasn’t burned much more than losing a fair bit of hair, and I damaged my knee on the jump to the ground. Sadly the whole workshop was lost, and all 3 of us were without a job from that day onward. We emptied a total of 13 extinguishers on that fire but they were no match for 80 litres of gasoline.

I used to work in a manufacturing plant that made paints. We were surrounded by pigments, heavy metal dusts, and tens of thousands of gallons of various solvents and poisonous chemicals. The plant had been rated at an eight mile blast radius and sits on the edge of a heavily populated town. Safe to say the people of that town have no idea of its existence or dangers. Static discharge is a fear among all of the employees and several precautions are taken to eliminate the possibility. You can imagine the uproar when there was a small fire and management refused to set the fire alarm or call emergency services because they didn't want to deal with publicity. We found out shortly after that the foam system didn't even function. Corporations suck. A fortune 500 company, at that. The fire these mechanics dealt with was a particularly difficult fire and I give that one guy props for knowing exactly where to find the extinguisher to have at least a bit of control.

That class B fire is nothing compared to ship's fire back in my Navy days. We had a new V16 Detroit Diesel installed to one the generators. This engine is the size of a box truck. While load testing the engine one of the connecting rods breached the engine wall. It must have been manufactured incorrectly like some loose fittings. Within seconds the lube oil and diesel fuel gushed out. The turbo chargers lost oil pressure and melted. Now we had activated the emergency fuel cutoff valve, but still had that diesel fuel / oil fire to deal with. We activated the halon and waited 30 minutes before entering the enclosure. It took about another 30 minutes (with several re-flashes) to put the fire out with the bilge sprinklers and AFFF stations located a deck above the fire.

I'm curious why the hell there was only one extinguisher in that garage and why it was so small? All the commercial/professional garages I've ever been to has had at least a 5kg ABCD extinguisher at each work station, and one at each door. Many also has a central foam extinguisher system, especially those that are combined with car brand dealerships.

A neighbor wanted to open it up to extinguish it and I called the Fire Department instead because I was not about to play with fire. Just a small note. Octane rating doesn't mean a fuel burns with any more intensity. High octane rated fuel is actually more difficult to ignite and has less energy. Which is the point of Octane rating. It means it can be compressed and the timing advanced more as it takes more to ignite it which both increase power through more fuel/air and mechanical advantage.

Back in the late 1940s my dad (only a toddler) had his house burn down on Christmas Eve. All seven kids and both parents escaped unharmed, but my dad never forgot the fear and decades it took for his poor (literally poor) family to get back on their feet and into a new house. Fast forward, my dad is now grown with a family of his own. My mom knew about the fire, they were childhood friends since Mom was about four. My brother and I? Well, we never stopped hearing about the fire on Christmas Eve and my dad was super, if not hyper vigilant about fire safety. He bought many fire extinguishers for our three bedroom house and taught my brother and I how to properly use a fire extinguisher when we were so small we could barely lift the bottles. Every year he would have us go through fire extinguishing drills when we would go camping. He would let a campfire get pretty large and tell one of us to put it out. By the time we were in late elementary school, we knew about smothering flames, which types to use what extinguisher (there were no ABC types when I was a kid)... and now that I am in my fifties living on a homestead with my brother, his family, my mom (dad passed a couple years back), fire is the number one threat to our property. We have two fire extinguishers and a fire blanket in each of the rooms in the house - not just bedrooms, all over the house. Smoke and CO alarms, the works. The community of homesteaders on this mountain have a volunteer fire department and our family contributes the heavy equipment (earth movers/backhoes mostly), but have reservoirs of rain water at the higher points on the property, about 500 feet in elevation above the houses, that we have a firefighting hose system and pump hooked to. Dad may be gone, but his family still remembers how to not panic and respond accordingly. His education he gave us for a lifetime is still being passed down along with the story of great grandpa's house burning down on Christmas Eve, so never play with fire... without adult supervision.

I took fire extinguisher training as part of an Emergency Response Team at a previous employer. Our "final exam" was to put out a gasoline fire that was similar to this. A perforated metal bucket hung from a chain suspended from a metal tripod, sitting in a 4x4 metal pan. The instructor poured gasoline in the bucket, lit the gasoline dribbling into the pan, and let the ERT members try to put it out with a single ABC extinguisher. Most of us took 2 or 3 tries. Some of us succeeded on our first try, but only after seeing someone else do it successfully (and paying attention).

The main thing is to keep the extinguisher spray moving quickly back and forth to cover the full width of the fire, starting at the base and moving slowly up and down to cover the full height of the fire. You can't focus on one or the other though. You have to put the whole thing out. Most of us needed 2 or more attempts before we got it out.

I remember a similar fire some years ago. I was part of a group of welders that had their own welding rigs. A fire started under one of the rigs and it burned through the fuel line coming from his auxiliary fuel tank so the fire was fed by the fuel coming out of the tank. The fire department arrived on scene but they could not get to the fire very well because the truck was fairly close to the ground. Someone brought a mobile crane over and hooked it up to the back of the welding deck and raised it up. The firemen did exactly what was shown here and kept going up and down with little effect. This went on for a while until someone suggested that they let down on the crane and bring to two separate fires close enough that they could be fought simultaneously. In a minute or two the fire was out. The firemen then grabbed a five gallon pail and tried to catch the fuel which was still pouring out. The welder who owned the rig asked them what they thought they were doing and they said they had to catch the fuel since it was a fire hazard and environmentally unacceptable. The welder told them they had better get some more pails since he had fueled up the night before and had 125 imperial gallons on board at which time the firemen decided to just let it run. Someone else then suggested that they just close the valve located on the tank where the fuel line originated....................

The problem in this case is that there's basically 2 fires that need to be extinguished at the same time which is impossible with a singular Co2 fire extinguisher because of the flowing fuel. Even understanding the situation at a glance is hard unless you're really experienced with putting out fires. He got the fire extinguisher ASAP and blasted it the best he could but it was of no use apart from delaying it from spreading out. I would have done the same, not being any less overwhelmed than him. The video should pose as a great example how a "simple" fire can be more complex than it looks.

The end bit of "that repair is free" reminds me of my buddy. He went to one of those "15 minute oil change places"...and the forgot to put the new oil in his engine. Drained the old one and changed the filter. Needless to say he got a few miles away and his engine blew up and car burned down. No joke the oil place said "we'll give you oil changes for free for the whole life of your new car." But never once offered to replace it.

That oil change company should have replaced the entire engine. I got fired from Firestone in Arizona for this. I drained the oil, changed the filter and put new oil in the truck. It was a 85 Chevy maybe a 75. Anyway I had a mechanic check it for me but forgot to get his signature signing off on it. Customer took truck, drove out the parking lot and turned right. About 30 minutes later he was back at the shop but walking. He claimed that there was no oil in the engine and he made it down the street before the engine froze up. They checked the paperwork and because I didn't have a second signature they sided with the customer. The mechanic even lied and said he never checked my work. Firestone bought the customer a brand new crate motor. After I got fired I left and went the same way the customer had gone and I followed the oil trail that started a half mile from the shop. He had pulled over, removed the oil drain plug and then drove it till it froze up. He turned down the side streets to hide the oil trail. I went back to Firestone and told my ex boss about it and he said that there wasn't a way to say that that was the oil from the truck. And they still sided with the customer. I stormed out but as I got to the door I saw the lying mechanic smiling at me so I flipped him off and told him I'll see him in hell mofo. Then left but returned and keyed the fu*k out of his 67 red Ford mustang. Hope he cried and had a heart attack. He was 69 years old. Anyway, that was over 20 years ago and he's probably dead by now from smoking camels unfiltered.

@@c2h7 The oil pressure warning often goes off briefly after changing the oil filter, because the pump needs to resaturate the filter housing a lot of the time. If there isn't any oil in the pan, you can easily irreparably damage the engine in just a minute or two before you realize something is wrong. (ie the expected light doesnt go off after a few seconds)

you don't get a new car, it goes through insurance. either their insurance where they pay the value of the car, or your insurance where they pays your claim fees, and depending of what happens, your insurance company can charge amount of the claim to them. either way, you will just get the insured amount or value of the car paid out, in anywhere 1 to 12+ weeks time.

At the dealership that I worked at during college the owner and a customer were watching as the customer's new car was driven wildly down the ramp between floors. The car went out of control and smashed into a wall. The customer calmy pointed at the wreckage and said "sue?" at which point the dealership owner pointed at the showroom and said "pick out a new car".

Fires are exponential. As soon as a fire becomes more than whatever your suppression system can handle, it's over. There's no way to be prepared enough to handle every fire scenario on your own. But I'm glad he said he did the absolute best he could with what he had.

Sir, I admire the way you tell it as it is. No blame as it was indeed a accident & they tried their best with the correct equiptment. Sadly their best was not good enough this time. Fault was draining gasoline into a plastic container that was not anti static. I saw this once happen when a open steel 1 gallon container of Acetone was dropped into a polythene container. A static electricity spark lit the vapor. No one hurt, fire put out. Flames went 20 foot up in the air. Plenty of the correct extinguishers available, plus the fire an fuel source were both by then on the floor.

As someone working in a car garage I have to say something about "using the wrong kind of fire extinguisher": When something starts burning you use "whatever is available". When my boss tried to weld oily sheet metal I used a blanket. When my Co-worker tried to clean a diesel-heater with brake cleaner AFTER he did a testrun I used a wallmounted water hose. When the carpet inside a car catched fire while someone was welding under the car I used the CO2 extinguisher that was standing beside that workplace. You use whatever you got. ...and change the workplace when you get tiered of putting out fires. Funny enough, when the place finally burned down it wasn't due to a work incident, but because of electrical issues
