Byner was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the tenth round (280th pick overall) of the 1984 NFL Draft. He played for the Browns (1984-1988; 1994-1995), Washington Redskins (1989-1993) and the Baltimore Ravens (1996-1997). He finished his 14-year NFL career ranked 16th on the NFL's all-time rushing list with 8,261 yards on 2,095 carries, with 56 touchdowns. He also caught 512 passes for 4,605 yards and 15 touchdowns, returned 33 kickoffs for 576 yards, and scored a touchdown on a recovered fumble, totaling 13,442 all-purpose yards and 72 career scores. It's really sad that 'the fumble' has been one of the most memorable moments about this player, when in reality, this guy was one of the NFL's greatest complete running back's to ever play the game.

@@danieljones1939 Webster Slaughter should've taken the blame. Had he ran his man off or even attempted to block, Byner was going in. Nice comments, Earnest Byner had such an inspirational NFL career. This man belongs in the HOF.

Way cool piece for Earnest. Underrated career and Ozzie made sure Earnest is in somebody's Ring of Honor as he certainly deserves that designation in both Cleveland and Washington. In my mind Earnest Byner was a great football player because he had his very best games in Championship competition. Earnest was certainly a Heart and Soul of the team type player.

Very well done video of one of the best - and most underrated - players to ever play football regardless of position. One of the greatest trades the redskins ever made. Earnest Byner embodies what being a champion is all about and should receive induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

I watched Byner play basketball in Redskins fundraiser. He was amazing. He could take off from the foul line and slam dunk the ball -- speed, power and leaping ability.

Forever a washington Redskin in my heart! Was my favorite player, next to John Riggins! Earnest was one of the best backs to ever play the game, and a model that kids could look up to! I remember my famous; "Earnest Chant"; when I was a kid, and this chant would go on as long as he was running; "Go Earnest"; "Go Earnest".......

I watched Byner way back at ECU, he ran behind Terry Long who died tragically. The 83 ECU team was a great football team, losing by a total of 14 points to three top10 teams and finishing 8-3. My aunt also had him in one class as she was a professor at the university. He could have quit after 'the fumble' but he came back to be a champion.

Great teammate. Paired brilliantly with Mack in Cleveland and Riggs in Washington. All would block like demons for each other.

The Browns of the 80's had something special, like all the great teams of that era. Dan Fouts and the Chargers, Steve and Joe of the 49'ers, Elway and the Broncos, Walter Payton and Mike Singletary of the Bears. The list goes on and on, and it was an era of football that I think is lost ti history.

They had Gerald Riggs who could still have started for about 2\3 of team in the league just as their short yardage RB. Not really possible these days with free agency. So last year of his career, gets 5 carries a game. 3\4 first downs and a TD or two. Goes off to retirement with a Ring and fresh as a daisy.

Cowboys fan here. Big fan of Byner even though he played for the hated Skins. Back then he was considered to be a big tailback and he could do it all. He could be the bell cow, have great games where he looked unstoppable, great at blitz pickup and was a very talented receiver and short yardage runner. Just rare to see a tailback his size that was that good at short yardage, blitz pickup and catching out of the backfield. I was thinking Zeke could be like '"Byner on steroids', but he was never a good receiver out of the backfield and up-and-down in blitz pickup (sometimes he was just downright terrible).
