15 playoff apperances in 19 years. The best offensive player on the President's trophy Blues. At the end of the day great teams win championships with a few bounces and he could have played a role in many of them. Brett Hull wasn't a winner until he won World Cup gold in 96 with USA then a couple Stanley cups with the Stars and Detroit. If he statys in St.Louis the narrative would have been he couldn't win the big one.

A Hall of Famer. Had one of the most spectacular seasons in Islanders history often on a line with Steve Thomas and Benoit Hogue or Derek King. However, even with Arbour coaching, a disappointing W-L record for a team with other good players like Ray Ferraro, Pat Flatley, Uwe Krupp, Vladimir Malakhov, Travis Green, Darius Kasparaitis and Glenn Healy. The HOF to a large extent is about winning Stanley Cups for players with borderline stats.

To get into the hall of fame you have to do one of two things: 1) be one of the top 50 or so players in the league for most of your career. And usually hit certian milestones 500 goals 1000 assists is a good baseline to put a player in the running. For goalies it takes about 300 wins and 100 shutouts to get that conversation started. 2)The hall of fame is voted on by hockey writers so being very good and loved by writers will give some guys a chance when their numbers are a little low.

The biggest problem with points is the timing of when you play. For instance points today are harder to come by than before. We see fewer 50 goal scorers now than in the older NHL. I am not saying he doesn't belong just that he isn't a top 30 player all time like your comment implies.

My ancient recollection of his play for the Blues was that he was very good, but not great. I also remember when he was a scratch during the playoffs because he had a migraine headache. I don’t recall if that was from previous head injuries, though it probably was. I do remember thinking it was a very lame excuse for missing a playoff game. That was before I was enlightened about the whole brain injury thing.

my first favorite hockey player ever, he's not really hall of fame material imo the way he looked with buffalo and the Islanders was great but after that Dale Hunter cheapshot (reminiscent of that Youngblood movie with Rob Lowe) he was never the same and he didn't lead anyone anywhere. His nickname was Sneaky Pete because he was sneaky he didn't have an authority over a game he got all his goals on rebounds when no one was looking and quick short bursts unlike the player he was traded for Pat LaFontaine who was in your face carrying the puck diving through the air dangerous captain best trade in Sabres history (of course besides the complete robbery of Chicago)

Turgeon put up nice numbers, no doubt but he was never dominant nor a non-stop highlight reel. He wasn’t a leader and yes, he was soft. The sad fact that they have left Pierre Turgeon out of the Hall for something he did as a 17-year-old kid is shameful. I love when you hear that he was soft. You know who else was soft, The Great One. Take a look at Gretzky trying to fight Neal Broten (who wasn't exactly Bob Probert) here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pcuEebCQrbvFo6c.html . Not all players were rock 'em, sock 'em. I guess Pierre should kiss Wayne's backside, like Kevin Lowe and that's how you get in the Hall. I am sure if 17 year-old Pierre knew that 30 years later he would be kept out of the Hall because of this, he may have gotten off the bench. But, since he could not fight, he could have permanently injured himself and cost himself his entire NHL career and that would have been everyone's loss.

Turgeon was blamed for the first round exit in 1996, which shows how crazy they were over there. Then at the start of 1996 Saku Koivu was breaking out, leading the league in scoring. Perfect. Trade away the scapegoat for the "grit" that was missing and with Koivu leading the way, this would bring the Cup to Montreal! Then soon after, Koivu is subject to a catastrophic injury after which he was never the same. Terrible, terrible management.

He was better than Lanny McDonald who's in the HOF, and on the committee..lol All in all he was a better player than many that ARE in there.. Dick Duff, Guy Carboneau, Clark Gillies, Bernie Federko, Kevin Lowe, McDonald, I would say Joe Mullen too. There's tons of players in there that I would say he's easily on par with too. Patrick Marleau will probably get in.. and I would take Turgeon over him ANY DAY.

I loved Carbonneau, and he and Turgeon are apples and oranges, but I agree that it's weird to see Carbonneau in the Hall of Fame and Turgeon not. Numbers matter. Defense matters too, but last I checked goals win games. The only problem I see with Turgeon getting in is who becomes the next Turgeon? Is it Damphousse? Then if Damphousse gets in, who's the next Vinny? My point is that there has to be a cut off line somewhere. There always has to be a "most points among players not in the HHOF" titlist. I don't think you can automatically induct that player just for having more points than any other not in the hall. That alone isn't a good enough reason. Ironically, Turgeon might be better remembered in hockey history if he remains at the head of debates about players not in the hall than if he's inducted and buried beneath a pile of even bigger names/better players.

Not a question of was he soft...nhl is tough have to be tough to play so long there...and toughness has nothing to do with poor leadership skills...
