There was also a 4th brother, oldest - Vladimir Stastny. He was a goalie but never left Czechoslovakia. Later he was goalie coach for Slovak National Team and was in team when they got gold, silver and bronze medal. Also great guy and very talented goalie. Unforutnetly he died last year at the age of 77.

Meeting Peter and Anton Stastny in 1981 at a morning skate/practice at the old Met Center when the Nordiques were in Minnesota for a North Stars game, I instantly became a Nords Fan. They were very cool and down to Earth. Still an Avs Fan to this day💪🏻 My best friend's dad was Carl Wetzel, a Scout for the North Stars at the time and played some Goalie in the NHL. We had an inside advantage to getting autographs and meeting players.

The Stastny's story is truly inspirational and one of the reasons I am a hockey fan. I saw them play. It's true what they say, you never really know what you had until its gone. Stastny, Goulet, Bergie, Dale... those really were the days.

Speaking of the iron curtain, I'd recommend watching "Red Army" from 2014 . It's a good documentary about the Russian five playing in the soviet union. "The Russian Five" from 2018 is also a good documentary about how they changed the Red Wings. If there's a way to stream it I'd recommend them, Shannon.

The NHL should have that on their website for. Between the move of the Nordiques and the Red Wings entire run, you pretty much have the two greatest stories in nhl history.

The entire Stastny family are some of my favorite players, Paul Stastny was my favorite Avs player and then i learned the story of Peter, Anton and Marian. Incredible family. It was interesting when I realized a couple years ago Joe Sakic played with Peter, Anton and Peter's son during his career

Great review Shannon. You are so right about young people and the Cold War. Many have no idea what it is. I was with a group of teens awhile back, watching a movie about a family who was attempting to escape from East Gremany. About 5 minutes in, we had to pause the movie so I could give them the background story. They had never heard of the Cold War. The NHL has a lot of Cold War stories including the first players from Russia. I would love to see you do a video on the players who defected from the USSR to play in the NHL. The Hockey History Guy.

When he scored a goal at 84 Canada cup against Czechoslovakia while wearing Canada jersey, it was huge moment, all canadian bench cleared and came for goal celebration, and there was biggest names in hockey, it's really great moment and nice satisfaction for Peter. Meanwhile in Czechoslovakia, game commentators had tough job, because they had an order, not to mention Stastny's name, but after he scored, they had to. My father still remembers that.

Being much older than Shannon, and the vast majority of his subscribers, I will always have fond memories of watching my Boston Bruins play the Quebec Nordiques up at Le Colisee. It seemed so far up North, cold, snowy and very French. The Stasny brothers were the most exciting and best players. Back in the 70's the Bruins always played at 7PM every Sunday night. I had good memories of watching the game at my grandfather's house, on a small T.V. w/ rabbit ears, with my uncle who loved the Bruins and especially Terry O'reilly.

17:21 The same for me …but as a Sabres fan! Oh how I loved (and hated) the Nordiques! The Battle of Quebec was epoch! Had the honor of meeting Peter (and the Mrs) at the World Championships in Moscow (2007?) - and Paul at a reception IHO Team USA. It was SO COOL to just talk hockey. A true GREAT (and a really great guy)!

There is a book called "Breakaway" by Tal Pinchevsky of the many defections, including The Stasnys. That was the only way a player from Eastern Europe could play in North America was to defect. Risk your life and abandon everthing.

Great topic and video, Shannon. As far as I know Peter Stastny is the only player to represent 3 different national teams: Czechoslovakia, Canada and Slovakia. Also when being General Manager of the Slovakian national team at the World Championsship in 2005 he would have gone up against his own son, Yan Stastny, who played for Team USA, if the teams had played each other.

Anyone wondering how the heck many goals the Nordiques scored in the '80s should know that there was a 4th great offensive player -- Hall-of-Famer Michel Goulet. He joined the Nordiques one year before Peter Stastny and left at the same time. In his 11 seasons with the Nordiques, Goulet had 456 G, 490 A, and 946 points. He had 4 consecutive 50-goal seasons, and scored 49 and 48 goals in the next 2 seasons.

I remember Peter was saying that Marian was the better player of the three brothers, but was too old to perform at his best in the NHL, if you consider that adaptation is easier when younger. The brothers, specially Peter and Anton, were very well integrated in the Quebec City community.

One of my favourite players of all time too... Peter Stastny; and he wouldn't get the crappy xenophobic "Euro-trashed" by Don Cherry, as he was A BEAST playing the game, too. Great memories, great Nordiques teams overall in the early 80's, but due to our being in Vancouver, we just never saw enough of them on TV, which is the saddest part. 🥰
