The Carters were the masters of beautiful music. They needed no trickery or "production" to make their music so full of feeling and so moving.

Absolutely gorgeous, flawless instrumentals in this. A.P.Carter's voice is perfect for this song and the deep meaning. At an age where I've sadly watched family members depart "one by one" from this life, "My Old Cottage Home" touches deeply. Yet with the sadness it brings, the song also comforts and reassures. The original Carter Family never ceases to amaze. Songs of such depth and beauty can be listened to over and over and never wear thin.

What many of us in this secular age never say, is that belief in God and in the next life is what brings consolation in this song, as in many others of the Carter’s songs. Without belief in the world to come there is no hope. So let’s tell it like it is.

Lyrics: I am thinking tonight of an old cottage home That stands on the brow of the hill Where in life's early morning I once loved to roam But now all is quiet and still Oh, my old cottage home, my old cottage home That stands on the brow of the hill Where in life's early morning I once loved to roam But now all is quiet and still Many years have gone by since in prayers there I knelt With dear ones around the old hearth But my mother's sweet prayers in my heart still are felt I'll treasure them all while on earth Oh, my old cottage home, my old cottage home That stands on the brow of the hill Where in life's early morning I once loved to roam But now all is quiet and still One by one they have gone from the old cottage home On earth we shall see them no more But we'll meet them again on that beautiful shore Where parting will come nevermore

That line "where in life's early morning I once loved to roam but now all is quiet and still" also was used in the lyrics of "The Cyclone at Rye Cove"

I just love the way Sara holds out The _Hill_ ....." with her vocals. It's little things like that that spell Genius!

Yes...great treatment of the harmony by Sara, and how unusual to hear AP sing solo. Combined with Maybelle's perfect finger picking, and this is an awesome performance by all three of the Carters.

It has been said that all American country and folk music all originates from the Carter Family, and Jimmie Rogers at the Bristol Recordings.

Tony Russell, Country Music Records 1921-42 lists this as Charlotte, NC May 25, 1931 with both Sarah and Maybelle on guitar and A.P. and Sarah on the vocal. Russell lists 5 other groups as recording this song.
@oldgordo6111 жыл бұрын
I donno about that..seems to me A P Carter was able to carry a tune..but it was usually Maybelle and Sara that did the singing. Too bad he died in relative obscurity. I'm just discovering this great pioneer country group..the 1st generation Carters.

First time ever I saw AP playing a guitar. Why did he not pose more with the guitar and play more when he was with the trio?
@Payton2348 жыл бұрын
AP didn't play any instrument. His contribution to the group was finding (and sometimes writing) the songs they recorded plus the occasional solo. He was also great at 'basing' as he called it; that is singing in the background.
@jondoes82228 жыл бұрын
They were the equivalent probably to Peter Paul and Mary in their time frame.

A.P. learned to play guitar in his later years. He learned it from his good friend Lesley Riddle.

Actually there is no one in recent music the equivalent of the original Carter Family. The Carters were pioneers and one of the absolute essential, roots of American music recording. Country, Bluegrass, Rock, R&B, Pop, etc. did not even exist until 10 years or more after the Carter Family ceased recording, and "Folk" music was just beginning to be called by that name. The Carter Family influence is felt through all American Music, from Gospel to Rock and beyond. Most of Woody Guthrie's influence came from the Carters, as did Bob Dylan's, Johnny Cash's and Elvis Presley's. All American musicians stand in the shadow of the Carter Family's profound influence stretching across time and musical genres. When Folk Music became popular again in the late 1950's, Carter Family recordings from 1927-1943 were a major reference, and groups like Peter, Paul & Mary, were direct descendants of the Carter Family. The original Carter Family sound and style is so unique and distinctive, that the trio immediately stands out among all groups, past and present. The Carter's also have such a broad musical range that they are almost impossible to classify. I think the unique, distinctive style, and broad musical range is why the Carter Family has had such an immense and continuing influence across all American musical genres.

These pictures are taken by Eric Schaal, a LIFE Magazine photographer for an article that was to run in LIFE in December , 1941. The article never ran because of Pearl Harbor. A.P. is simply posing for the picture using Maybelle's Gibson L-5 guitar that she used throughout her career. He's probably not actually playing it. The shoulder strap is just hanging loosely on his lap.
