This video was particularly well done. Congrats. One piece of advice for those of us living in earthquake country: Put a pair of old shoes under your bed. If the EQ happens overnight, slip 'em on before you exit your bed. The most common injury after an EQ is cut feet!

I live on the peninsula so I watch my earthquake app every day. Just offshore from Vancouver Island there have been just over 30 quakes in the past 30 hours or so. Also, Puget Sound is having an earthquake swarm right now. The offshore quakes have included many above magnitude 4 up to magnitude 4.8. Any of them could initiate a large rupture. An excellent portrayal of the seismic risk. I concur that the casualties, both deaths and injured, as described by FEMA and other government agencies is far to optimistic. In my opinion, a full rip of the Cascadia fault would see a minimum of 60,000 to 100,000 casualties at the end of 4 weeks. A significant number of the injured will not be able to obtain the necessary medical assistance in a timely manner which will increase the fatality numbers. Your hypothetical example has been narrated in other presentations. What isn't mentioned in all the discussions of the subject that I have seen thus far is the numerous after shocks having various intensities. What was weakened during the main event will now have a greater possibility of collapsing. Now imagine a deep, long cold spell coming out of Canada when that occurs; or a cold wet spell. Whom am I - A Building Inspector of 28 years in the PNW and a Structural engineering Technologist. My experience includes 50 story high rises, etc. The lack of honest clarity by the "Authorities" deeply disturbs me.

Great info! I watch everything about Cascadia and your video is among the best! On my way to work one day (from Bonney Lake to Burien) I realized the roads I was on were either Volcano, Tsunami, and/or Earthquake evacuation routes. I was offered a job and moved back to Kansas City in 2012.

IMO, you are right that casualties and injuries would be much much higher in a full rip, even a partial rip, depending on the location.

The 2015 Cascadia Megaquake Report was originally written for the LA Basin. Managers have misled the Public into thinking the remote Pacific NW has the next US West Coast Megaquake; not panicking 40 million Californians into fleeing their State. "Everything destroyed between the Pacific Ocean and I-5" can't happen to Seattle nor Portland, for the coastal mountains in WA and OR.

I first learned about the Cascadia fault in the late 80s the Army Corps of Engineers was studying it. Rows and rows 12 ft high lined the hallways taped to the wall showing the movement of over 1000 miles of coastline. No one else seemed to know. When Loma Prieta hit I was in that as a first responder and diver with the Army. I thought the Cascadia would blow then. Now it’s any second it can hit.

I used to live in Copalis 76-77. My friend and I used to canoe the Copalis river frequently. We often wondered what killed those huge trees. We had no idea, otherwise I would not have lived on the beach!

Yea! So we decided to move to the high desert where it’s 116F+ for weeks on end with zero rain at 1200’. If we can survive here, we can survive just about anywhere. The northern tip of the Sonoran Desert is a very curious landscape. From Scottsdale to Sedona the geology indicates a massive flood over the Mogollon Rim and through present day Phoenix, depositing gravel beds and sand way into Mexico.

This is an excellent, erudite summary explanation of the reason for and damage by a 9.2 earthquake in Cascadia of the Pacific Northwest of America. Bravo Solomon! Being a geologist, I enjoyed it even though people I love live there. But I live in hurricane ally on the opposite side of the country, so I can't criticize. In America, you can choose your disaster. Almost every location has something.

FACTS: Native Washingtonian here. We are fully prepared, so we are actually NOT at risk. The Space Needle was designed to withstand a 10.0 quake. We worked hard with Japan for the last 50 years on quake and tsunami technologies. NOAA has tsunami boueys out at sea for both countries to share data. We created shock-disk technologies for our buildings, so they are quake-proof. I have been through THREE quakes, (I am 47) and was in a condo for one, and got to see the hidden shock disks work. The building whipped, but was unphased. We had next to zero damage with the over 6.0 Nesquali quake.We have quakes all the TIME and are absolutely fine. We have torn down ALL old brixk schools that were over two stories to protect children,while others were updated with technologies.🤷‍♀️ Almost ALL older buildings have already been retrofitted.

Looks like a few people making comments have never taken a basic geology class and don't know about seismographs. The plates are real and have been mapped. If liquifaction occurs, no escape.

Have you read that document that came out (more like book) in 2016? It breaks down what it would look like when the big one hits, the collapse of infrastructure, where most casualties will be, how far up the tsunami could go. I work for the State and they sent it in an email for fun, I think. I read the whole thing and have been obsessed (and educating others) since. Can't wait to watch your volcanoes episode! Have you looked into the episodic tremor and slip (ETS) cycle (~15 month period) that has been proposed, monitored, and studied over the last couple decades? I saw a very interesting discussion of the last cycle's activity, which was non-conforming compared to previous episodes. You're probably very busy, but it would be super interesting to delve into this further.

A9.3 mega quake would be truly devastating to us 13million folks whom live in the Pacific N.W. everything that 15 times bigger along with structures added to our state and communities, I think is going to be a dam of everything from trees to " you name it!!!" Will be a mountain of buildings,trees,etc,etc... it's a scary thought,but we are way past due for a major quake of unprecedented force!!!! And with this 90s to 100° weather lately;"well.....that is earth quake weather!! I was sitting out on my patio the other night,and I actually felt a slight tremor,and another one on the 6th of this month of which woke me up!! I spent 40 years of my life in the PNW, the greater Seattle-Tacoma area. When I went back to visit in 2020, I literally cried when I saw my favorite volcano, Mt Rainier, again. Thank you so much for this! (I went to OH and now I'm in MO). And I know they (my family in Lakewood, south of Tacoma) could have the big megathrust quake that's predicted in five minutes! Hoping not, however.

Lived there for 8 years . Went through 2 earthquakes. 1 shook the house. 1 had rolling waves. Spooky.

Great video, if i could add another bit of information that's relevant to Cascadia and specifically the southern area of Cascadia along California. If i recall correctly, about 80% of full margin ruptures (so that's the entire faultline slipping all at once) also result in the San Andreas fault rupturing and causing magnatude 8 quakes. That is a colossal double whammy for California. Be prepared and have a plan, that's our best course of action and hopefully it doesn't happen in our lifetimes...However over the last month the southern portion of the fault has been very active and over the last few days the tremors off the coast of Vancouver Island have been 4.5 and above so it's something to certainly keep in mind. Be safe, everyone.

Very interesting. The consequences of that quake would be disastrous. I’m living safely in South Australia which is mildly(hopefully) seismically active. The mid north of the state is more active and has scale 2 or 3 rumbles quite regularly. The area is sparsely populated so it doesn’t cause any widespread panic. However, my wife and I are planning a holiday in the area in a few months time. I’ve noticed a couple of small recent quakes in the area. I haven’t told my wife because she has an irrational fear of earthquakes. 😊.

I understand everything you are discussing about the big one, being a 6th generation Washingtonian. I just find it odd that you would choose a time when those faults, not to mention Mt. Raineer and Mt. St. Helens have been showing a bit of activity that already has people on alert. We already have enough crazy and panic in the world. Anyone living in these areas are very aware of where they live. Unfortunately, there are always the clueless that either just moved here, without reasearch, or just don;t understand and videos like this at this time can cause panic. I've seen it before. I have seen many bits on this and they are all the same. I have seen credible forecasts which go as high as 9.8. Few people address the vertical acceleration. Another neglected topic is the effect on poor or weak infrastructure inland. What bridge or dam or toxic waste pond, or taillings pile or cliff face over a highway is going to collapse, fail, give way, slide and fall down 100, 200, 300 or even more miles inland. I bet there is LOTS much of which will hamper rescue efforts re: resources and transportation. Do a show on that. Cheers!

The Cascadia is definitely active right now from Ca up to Canada and increasing in sizes with quakes. I know that Chile had the largest mega quake of a 9.5 or so, and Japan, Haiti, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Alaska, Tonga, All Shifted and caused huge quakes and tsunamis all over. The Cascadia I believe will be bigger and shake longer from a Big part of Northern California all the way up to Canada will shake everything and everywhere hard then the Mega Tsunami is coming and even Southern, Ca up to the Bay area will be affected. The Cascadia may produce a 9.6 and the Tsunami will be bigger and wider than the 1700 one.

I’m curious of the average span between quakes as we get closer to current. So like the past 20 mega quakes instead of the full 40. Also the last 15 or 10. Does that average get shorter? Are they getting more frequent?

The gulf of mexico is a big bowl. The cascadia will take out the states around it when it displaces that water. New navy map shows it.

My best suggestion for electricity, if your home can survive this, is a giant propane tank and a generator that can use it and plenty of extra oil and sparkplugs for it. You can also charge large batteries when you use it to get the most out of it. A 12v 300ah LiFeP04 battery can run a freezer or small fridge for a very long time to save on fuel.

I would like to point out that there is a congestion of exotic terrains mashed together in the PNW. I wonder if they could act like shock absorbers due to the abundance of faults and fractures inland from the coast? What is the North American plate doing under these terraines? I live in Eureka, at the southern end of the Cascadia fault. The Mendocino Triple Junction is south of us, so we get the occasional strong quake. Really hoping I won't be in the area when The Big One comes.
