The only real mistake that they made was trusting the corrupt system that focuses more on money and law than it does on achieving justice. This poor girl is poor deer precious young woman and her family were tortured and the entire idiot Facebook mob is complicit with their pain. My dad was a lawyer for over 4 decades and we were always taught even if you know and are 100% sure you are innocent never talk to police without a lawyer present.

@Demerara Gold never talk to police during an interrogation always invoke your fifth amendment and request a lawyer everything you say can and will be misconstrued and used against you. I have a Bachelors in criminal justice before receiving my education I would have cooperated now I won't.

This case was a HUGE reason why I’ve explained to my kids that they can come to me about absolutely anything and I’ll never get mad and I will *always* love them. No matter what. As far as grooming goes, this is a huge tactic used to isolate their victims. I do constant check ins with my kids. I ask about visits, friends, outings, etc. and who they’re with. If it makes them feel weird or icky, listen to that feeling and to do what they can to get out of that situation & call me. My teens have been very honest with me, I’ve held true to my words, and we have a very, VERY good relationship. They’ve called me quite a bit to get out of sticky situations. No, I am not “besties” with my kids, but I also never want something unfortunate like this. Having an open relationship eventually fosters a friendship later in life, but letting them know you’re there for them NOW encourages an open conversation to have with your kids.

All people have a mind of Their Own and the kid growing up under their pants are much more brighter than you may believe they give you just what you want and know how to manipulate and they'll tell you everything that'll make me think they're perfect especially the ones feel like they're not treat a family and smiling your face and stab you in the back every chance they get as far as what you thinking they are or who they are

I’m a police dispatcher of 25 yrs, have police officers in every generation of my family as well as military all the way back 7 generations. I was not only “friends” with my local police, but worked directly with them, worked on raising funds for them, and much more. But when my son was friends with another teen boy that the police “wanted to bring the hammer down on” . They proceeded to USE ME AND My TRUST in them to ARREST MY SON ON TRUMPED UP CHARGES TO GET HIM TO GIVE UP INFO ON HIS FRIEND …. BOY oh boy did I LEARN my lesson….NEVER EVER EVER TALK TO ANY PD WITHOUT A LAWYER…FOR ANY REASON…PERIOD. I left my profession shortly after and will NEVER look at the police the same again.

You're exactly right! I learned the hard way, too. My daughter was sentenced to 8 years in prison for using drugs. She was never a dealer, a thief, or violent. I will never talk to police again. They manipulate and they lie. They can be very violent. I have instructed my other children and grandchildren to never talk to the police. I taught them their rights. I used to "back the blue" 100%. Now I know better.

It is so easy to judge. As an OB nurse I’ve seen so many situations where women don’t know they’re pregnant or families never saw it. There was absolutely no evidence that the baby was born alive. To try to send her to prison for life is unreasonable and wrong.

I can’t help but feel that the law is slanted against females. The males who get the girls pregnant do not suffer the same level of anguish faced by females or the ramifications of having unprotected sex. On the one hand it’s hard to hold the sperm donor responsible for deliberate malice on the part of the mother. But not holding the sperm donor responsible doesn’t seem like justice either.

100% this. The one time I was arrested, my layer asked me "why are you here seeing me?" I began to explain the situation, and he stopped me and said "NO. You're here seeing me because you talked to the police. NEVER talk to the police, even if you know you're a billion percent innocent. Say nothing except 'I want my lawyer.' ."

That is exactly what should happen. People think they are helping or they are being honest and it will make it easier, just like the police claim. It is NEVER OK. They tell you….”your words can and WILL be used against you.” This is such a shame. It shouldn’t have been such a public event. I agree police should be involved. The girl was pregnant. It makes argument for not having an honest relationship with her Mom. Everyone deserves a loving and trustworthy relationship with their parents. Especially Mom. I hope these people learned how to communicate snd stop shaming their child. Know your rights snd stay quiet. Nothing is black and white. Some people are evil. Some people are scared like this girl. Her parents were shocked. Also the girl had a horrible eating disorder. This girl was really messed up. I hope they all got their lives together.

We know nothing about him, their relationship, why they broke up, and whether he even knew about the pregnancy (doubtful considering how secretive she is). The fact is that this young woman suffers from severe mental illness, which ultimately was the root cause of this entire tragic chain of events.

People who talk about vanity completely misunderstand what an eating disorder actually is and the power it can have over a person’s mind. It is probably hard for people to understand but the girl was/ possibly still is clearly very poorly and needed help and support with her eating disorder. Her strange messages to her mother after giving birth are really part of that obsession and it truly is a mental illness and she has my sympathy. Being trapped in the cycle bulimia is one of the worst things a person can go through. Whatever happened with the baby she will regret it for the rest of her days and does not need any more hatred or vitriol aimed at her. No doubt she does this all on her own through her disorder.

@@darkskinneddutchess4007Some people do have disorders that make them eat more and look fat. It is called Binge Eating Disorder. An actual anorexic will often cover themselves up a lot and wear baggy clothes, and does not feel skinny at any point, no matter how much weight they lose or how close to death. I cannot speak for this girl, but what I am saying is true.

I thought it was a good wake up call. This whole situation actually. I thought the underlying message was: instead of having a disregard for life by harming yourself, the baby and your loved ones with her choices. You most learn to honor life by your choices.

@@estherharing7430 Except its not a 'disregard for life', its an illness. An eating disorder isn't something you choose to have. It can take years for people to recover and some people never do, hence why it has such a high mortality rate. You wouldn't say to someone that has a physical illness that they have a 'disregard for their life' or that they should just get over it and make better choices, so I don't know why mental health issues are treated the same.

I’m sorry but that medical examiner should be fired. She ruled it a homicide when there was no scientific evidence of it. Like how do you retract saying bones were burned? She says “based on autopsy results alone I cannot determine if it was a live birth” - she literally had one job, and that’s all she could speak into. How they took her word beyond the evidence is mindblowing.

As an OB nurse.... There is an overwhelming number of girls who come in and deliver babies and their parents never had any idea they were pregnant. Unfortunately it's way more common than people think. Every time it breaks my heart for all of them that are involved. I hope that this whole family is able to move on. Godspeed

I keep thinking about that first video in the interrogation room, just after her parents found out what happened. I remember how the mother went on and on about what people were going to think and say, and neither parent seemed to show, nor did they say, anything truly consoling to this obviously emotionally stunted girl. I got the clear impression that they’d always demanded perfection from her and that’s why she didn’t feel she could turn to them for help. That would also explain the eating disorder. The parents’ demeanor is very different in this show than it was then.

I went back and played the part again where, after she'd gone to her mother's obgyn and found out she was 8 months pregnant, was crying and told her mother that "the first appointment was traumatic" and the mother agreed and left it at that. I don't know what EITHER of them had EXPECTED the appointment to be like, but TRAUMATIC wouldn't be on MY list ... unless, of course, I was LYING to my mother about not having had sex yet and being 8 MONTHS PREGNANT already. WOW, talk about sheltered ... lol

This is a hard one. But the one thing I know - that medical examiner needed to be admonished. She should not have kept her license or job after a "mistake" like that! I'm horrified. I can't imagine this was her first or last mistake, and that needs to be rectified.

This is a lesson to parents. Do not have such expectations for perfection from your kids that they don't feel safe enough to tell you when they need major help. I think they aren't awful parents but being obsessed with being perfect hurts your child. This is the result of that.

Well the mum did take her to the doctors to get the pill. I think they must have had a good relationship, and the mum understood her needs, although she was too late. Skylar was never planning on keeping the baby

There’s something about that mother that doesn’t set well with me. The dad seemed legitimately upset by the whole ordeal. She was odd.

Yes I saw other (older) clips of the mom where she constantly beraded Skylar. The parents tell her story in this video. It is extremely biased and they paint her off as this instable child. They probably decided it was best for her not to get interviewed because she has had a lot of time to reflect on what happened and can come to a conclusion herself now. The parents had unrealistic expectations and made her feel worthless since a young age. She could have developed an eating disorder because she felt like she was never enough. And the only thing she could control and could get praise for, was for being skinny and losing weight. Her mom definitely was an enabler, pusher and probably the cause of that.

The detectives convinced her that she burned her baby after she told them “no” 17 times. So sad to think how many innocent people are in jail due to false confessions.

I watched this hours ago and can’t stop thinking the same thing so I came back to the comments. Did the mom think she just ate too much pizza? And her mom saying she was happy her daughter was healthy now is a pathetic excuse for turning a blind eye. Did the parents think her eating disorder was magically cured? No they didn’t. People know that doesn’t happen “overnight”. Those parents aren’t that stupid. I feel evil narcissism from all of them. I love, love, love my kids and will always support them, but I’ll also tell them when they’re wrong. I don’t recall in this story her parents ever telling her she was wrong. Feels like a red flag to me. The judge was right; many different decisions could have changed this outcome. I hope she never has the opportunity to be a mom.

The dad knew they were being recorded at the police station. When he first saw his daughter, he purposely said, "I wish you would have just told us." He was trying to cover his and his wife's tracks.

I wholeheartedly agree with the verdict. There was no evidence that the baby was born alive, nor any evidence that Skylar murdered her. Here in the US, we must have evidence. It’s quite a leap to just, “imagine,” that Skylar murdered her baby, without any evidence, and an even bigger one to say she burned that baby alive. You must have evidence. If there was no evidence at all that she burned the baby, then they shouldn’t have convicted her of felonious abuse of a corpse, and they should have convicted her of a misdemeanor charge, instead.

People can give birth silently. As a labor nurse seen it 100s of times. The mind is a powerful thing. If a baby isn't resuscitated correctly it's possible for it to die shortly after birth. Not An unthinkable story.

This girls reaction to having a supposed "stillborn" sorry but you still call 911. Also, I think the statement about the baby being burned was retracted bc the professional was paid to. Highly doubt she saw burn evidence and then it suddenly disappeared. Also, the fact that she knew she was 8 months pregnant and never told anyone, and was more concerned how good she was going to look in a dress, tells me she knew she was getting rid of it. Had no intention of keeping it. And I think the mom knew too.

I agree! No matter how guilty he thought the girl was, she was only 18 and what sane, conscious human being would grin and laugh at a tragedy that happened to not only the girl (that he clearly thought was malicious and completely guilty) but a newborn as well. It seemed like he had no feelings and compassion whatsoever and he knew way more about the horrific deatils of this case than the public.

I had a kid in high school and it was embarrassing and scary. My son's a beautiful man now and amazing. The point is girls get really scared! Always tell someone you trust or just go to a hospital alone. They help you so much!! So many ways to get help when it comes to pregnancy.

Luckily, these days, it is not so embarassing to have a child. Everyone knows young people have sexual intercourse and a baby can be the result. We should encourage young women, who are in these situations to seek help. At the end it is always best for the baby to be weldcomed and that the mother has done all she can however scary. And we need to stop these attetudes that tell young women that it is somehow wrong or scary to have a baby.

Yes, there are pregnancy centers in every county in America that will help you! They will do your check ups, help you tell your family, help you with the things babies need. But Planned Parenthood doesn't want you to know about them, they want you to go to their center and just get your pregnancy "taken care of". As a teenager, you just don't know what to do. I was 20 years old when I was pregnant and in college and people still treated me like I was an embarrassment. It was much worse for girls younger than myself. I always noticed how differently they were treated. It's what has given me a life long passion for helping teenage mothers.

This situation is so bizarre. What bothers me is how can they say that she burned her baby? And then come back and say she didnt. This entire trial is because of the initial burning of the baby. For a girl already paranoid about weight… finding out that shes 8 mo pregnant while a senior must have been so hard. Yes, shes prob a self centered girl… what high school student is so different than that? What she did wrong is she wasn’t open with her family but at the same time…. That doctor should have spoken to her mom as well. Yes she is 18, but she’s still living under her mothers roof… shes still dependent on her mother.

Yeah the neighbors were hella out of pocket. There was a lot to unpack in this case, but at the end of the day, I feel like the jury got it right. There’s too much reasonable doubt here. I do wonder though, when she found out she was 8 months pregnant, did the doctor know if the baby was healthy? Did they try to follow up on any prenatal care? It wasn’t mentioned the health of the unborn baby at that time.

When it comes down to it, Brook murdered her child. The time I saw the first photo of her not smiling, I literally felt a chill. The expression the eyes are the window to the soul shows the callous, evil side of this person. The sadness that so many of us feel for this innocent baby’s life being taken away intentionally by the birth mother is overwhelming. Hearing the judge’s final words at her sentencing show that she fooled no one with her empty apology. I pray for the precious little girl who was never given but a few moments of life to bless the world with her presence. May she rest peacefully in heaven….. 🙏🏻

She told Skyler to keep taking the laxatives and she we ould be the best looking girl at that game and Brandon deserves that. Skyler's brother said they let him have snacks "because he could handle it" but Skylar would eat it all. She wanted a perfect skinny blonde daughter and that's all there was too that. Who the tells their daughter to take laxatives ? That isn't a mother struggling with her daughters eating disorder. If I'm as they with as anyone it's her. I watched the entire trial begining to end. She told her to KEEP taking the to laxatives which means she'd been taking laxatives. That could have contributed to the outcome.

In my country Police is not allowed to lie. The truth counts, not what they want the truth to be. In your country Police can force confessions with lies almost legally. I’m sorry, but she did not do “what she thought she had to do!” She did what she wanted to do by burying that baby. Even if the baby was still born, an 18-year-old girl knows that that is wrong and she should tell her parents when that is happening. She would not have told anybody, except for the fact that she had been told she was pregnant by the doctor and the doctor probably contacted her regarding her due date since she probably never came in again, asking about the baby, and she had to confess and tell a story that it was stillborn. Otherwise, I don’t think she would’ve told anybody had she found out she was pregnant on her own, and no one else knew. She would’ve had that baby, and disposed of it. The parents obviously do not hold her fully accountable for her actions which fuels kids/people like this girl, into believing they can get away with other things as they become adults. Terrible

I think the judge at the end, said it all. Her choices during pregnancy, during birth, and after birth, determined that babies fate. This exact case is what goes through my head as a mom of teenagers. It’s the reason I’ve sat them down on many occasions to make certain they know that they can come straight to me and dad in any and every situation and we’ll find a way to work it out. No matter how bad or scary it may be. I even gave them scenarios and examples so I know they get it. Parents need to make sure to do this. Kids see situations way differently than adults do and a lot of kids get into life destroying trouble trying to cover up stuff they don’t need to.

That is so very important, to let children know they are safe and can tell their parent/parents things. Just as it’s also very important to guide the child and introduce them to things at their level. Many parents do not like it, but talking about biology and sex is part of parenting in order to prevent these things. Imagine her being so terrified of what her parents would say, that she found keeping the pregnancy a secret, and sneeking out in the night to bury the baby in the backyard, to be a better option than to tell her parents what had happened. I do react though to the doctor not informing her children considering this happened when she was a minor, and she needed proper check-ups and a birthing plan etc. a teen asking the doctor to not say anything and they did nothing after that, is a violation.

Stop throwing these words around when you don’t know these people at all and probably don’t have the professional background to determine wether or not someone has a personality disorder to begin with. What they went through because of people who love to judge and insert themselves into other people’s lives is terrible. Don’t act like you wouldn’t care about being crucified on a national level, having people come to your house, being threatened. Of course they cared how other people reacted, that’s completely normal and not narcissistic at all. We are social animals and it’s in our DNA to care about community and our social standing.

Interrogation can definitely produce false confessions, especially in children. I remember when I was in middle school, my brother lost his new expensive sweater we had to wear at out private school. My mother kept asking him what he did with it. He said nothing, that he just lost track of it. She kept asking him if he threw it away out of spite, and finally he just caved and said yes, to end the drama. Several months later on the last day of school, he found the sweater in the back of his cubbyhole. He decided to just throw it away and keep the guilty adjudication, rather than stir it all up again.

Her mother 100% is a liar. She knew her daughter was pregnant. The texts sent about her prom dress and her belly being back say it all. Left out of this show is all the testimony that her mother monitored her daughters weight daily, and was extremely harsh on her about any small gained pound. Other parents from the cheerleading squad testified that mom was unnaturally involved with the Brooke, constantly critical of everything she did and her appearance. Her food was monitored, her boyfriends had to meet her moms standard. The father in general was and is clueless.

Yes. Cops can legally lie to you. But by the same token, law enforcement very rarely have anyone tell them the truth, about anything. Just listen to random talk on the street, in movies, tv shows and most likely in your own family. Maybe even yourself. People just talking about getting pulled over for speeding or some other reckless and illegal driving: the first thing the driver says is that they have no idea why they are pulled over. Next is the first thing they are trying to think of is how to lie about it and trying to get out of it. If the general public is that obviously always thinking up how to lie to try and get out of a ticket, don't you think when someone is trying to cover up something much worse, don't you think they would have spent weeks , months and even years honing their lies and story to give to the police when they finally catch up to them?

The first issue is the moms obsession with telling her daughter she looked great or a certain way and commenting on her body instead of really wanting to help her and educate her properly. Her parents let her be a cheerleader at 11 years old. When I was little, I asked my mom if I could be a ballerina, and she said no. Probably saved me from an eating disorder. When you encourage your daughter to pursue sport that’s likely to cause an ED, ain’t no way you’re all body positive and “oh you can quit if you want.”

What I never understand about these kinds of Internet comments is that surely you know how heavily edited these shows are? Have you ever been interviewed or TV? They ask you the same question worded slightly differently multiple times. They likely asked her, “and how has all of this impacted YOU personally?” “How are you dealing with this?” “How has this changed your life?” “For you, as a mom, this must not be what you expected in life for when your children would have children, right?” And so on. You really can’t honestly tell how bizarre someone’s statements like this are without watching unedited interview footage to see the context for the responses shown. For anyone who doesn’t understand what I’m saying, think carefully before going on reality television or doing any interviews because you are going to be blindsided by how clips can be arranged to give a context that didn’t exist in real life. That’s not always some big tragedy or even intended to be deceitful but it does mean that interviews like this are not “evidence.”

It's a terrible situation. If the state has no proof the baby was born alive then there's a reasonable doubt. And the detectives pushed her to say the baby was alive she never said it on her own.

Some people can’t accept they’re pregnant. My best friend found out she was pregnant at 7 months, but her mom was there and she didn’t really bind with her son for months. She was in denial and shock. I’m not excusing her behavior but I totally get why she would do all of this. When you’re pregnant, you can become very mentally I’ll.

I’ve suffered from ED(sometimes a lot, sometimes I had a little break from it… until I saw myself in a mirror or a photo) since… honestly, I tried every type of diet since I was able to read. When I was 13, my height: 165cm , my weight(lowest, end of summer 2007) : 37kg ( almost 5’5 feet , 81 pounds) and it was just a pure misery. I wouldn’t wish that to anyone… I got really mad when he almost said that she’s just a basically blonde Barbie that cared more about her looks than her baby… so many people die because of ED, it’s so sad to see her so nervous, feeling guilty and sorry …. Plus many mums have psych.problems after giving birth to their baby… and she was a teen. Just breaks my heart… poor Skylar… and Annabelle💔🕊

There's a point where you can't go to your parents to ask for help because you might feel ashamed or don't want to displease them, etc. And that can happen in the healthiest parent-child relationship as well, it's natural. But the fact that the doctors and the system doesn't have a "last resort" in case anyone needs it, is devastating. She could've been informed about adoption. In my country we have at least one incubator at every hospital in a small room without CCTV and people who might've been to scared to go to the hospital to give birth, can put the baby in the incubator anonymously so that it can be put up for adoption. It's not a huge investment by the government to do this at hospitals but it can literally save so many lives which is more important than anything.

I totally agree with the judge. He says he believes if she'd made different decisions during and after the pregnancy that the baby would probably be alive. Seems logical to me. She knew she was pregnant and didn't follow up with doctor. Its sad but she did endanger that baby. She didn't seem to upset about it either. Was at the gym and happy to have her body back.

It may seem odd, and I don't know how common it is, but there are those who just don't gain much weight when pregnant. I have a cousin on my mom's side who gained only 15-20 pounds with her first child. She gained 35 or so with her 2nd.

BUT after hearing how the 2nd interrogation went I firmly believe even if her dad had told her not to say anything and request a lawyer she still would have talked and answered their questions anyway bc she’s so naive and was absolutely terrified. They were easily putting words into her mouth and getting her to admit to EVERYTHING they were saying all bc she thought that’s what they wanted to hear and not bc that’s what actually happened.
