Rand Paul takes on socialist arguments about Venezuela, Scandinavia, and “fairness”

---------
Even as Venezuelans starve, Senator Rand Paul notes that socialism has gained ground in the United States.
That's why he wrote "The Case Against Socialism." The chapter on Venezuelan socialism is titled, "Because Eating Your Pets is Overrated.”
"You would think that ... when your economy gets to the point where people are eating their pets, people might have second thoughts about what economic system they’ve chosen,” Senator Paul tells John Stossel.
But Stossel notes that today American socialists say: "We won’t be like that.” Senator Bernie Sanders says, “when I talk about democratic socialism, I’m not looking at Venezuela. I’m not looking at Cuba. I’m looking at countries like Denmark and Sweden.”
But Paul debunks that myth in his book.
"It's not true that the Scandinavian countries are socialist," Paul tells Stossel.
Stossel points out that while Scandinavia tried socialist policies years ago, they then turned away from socialism, privatizing industries and repealing regulations. In fact, when experts rank economic freedom, Scandinavian countries rank near the top.
Denmark's prime minister even responded to Sanders, saying: "Denmark is far from a socialist planned economy."
Scandinavia did keep socialist policies like government-run health care. Media outlets suggest that's why Scandinavians live longer.
But Paul says: "This is the trick of statistics ... it started way before socialized medicine."
His book has the stats to back that up. In the 1960s, before Sweden's healthcare was totally nationalized, Swedish men already lived 5 years longer than American men. Now, they... still live 5 years longer.
Stossel says Paul’s book is different from other politicians’ platitude-filled books. Paul did actual research. He cites sources that back up his point about health care:
-- Swedish men in 1960s: www.scb.se/en/finding-statist...
-- American men in 1960s: www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/hus/hus...
Regarding Sweden's ability to pull people out of poverty, Paul credits Swedish culture, not government programs. He tells Stossel of a story about Nobel Prize winning economist Milton Friedman:
"This Swedish economist comes up to him and he says, 'You know in Sweden we have no poverty.' And Friedman responds, 'Well, yeah, in America we have no poverty among Swedish Americans.’"
Paul confirms that with data from Swedish researcher Nima Sanandaji, who writes: "Danish Americans today have fully 55 percent higher living standard than Danes. Similarly, Swedish Americans have a 53 percent higher living standard than Swedes."
Stossel says it's good that Senator Paul debunks these myths and warns against repeating the tragic history of socialism.
Paul gives a partial list of failures: "Stalin, Hitler, Mao, Pol Pot, Castro, Chavez, Maduro. It doesn’t work."

Exactly. Poland still suffers from the socialist era. People indoctrinated for so long are still under this idea. We need at least 2 more generations to free ourselves, both citizens and political leaders. Example ... people believe this 500+ system (government paid support of 125$/month for every kid) is better that bigger tax free amount - and they vote for this socialist (called far-right) party.

Socialism in Eastern Europe had very bad starting conditions after WW II. The war had been much more deadly and devastating in the East than in the West, not to mention the US which didn't get a single bomb dropped onto her roof. The socialist countries in Eastern Europe had suffered 90% of all the life losses and damages and they never really recovered from that. The United States were a late arriving war participant who as such eventually did the rip off in territories, scientists, engineers, academics, patents, gold and markets, and who declared only capitalism and hard work created all the wealth. LMAO.

@Caped Crusader Taking a liberty position such as ours is difficult. On the one hand, people should be free to decide on their own. On the other the left has near total control of news media, entertainment and education so how 'free' are these people? Yet, taking away their choices "for their own good" makes us no better than the authoritarian lefties (and it wasn't that long ago that the right was acting in this very way - so we know we have to be wary of our human nature getting the best of us). I don't envy anyone who actually has to make significant decisions about this.

mr Dead man - Socialism isn’t the answer to $900 ambulance rides. How are you trying to tie this into the conversation? I was shot in the back in 2000. The ambulance came, took me to the hospital, and billed me for it. The $1400 bill (not $900) and the subsequent $100,000 hospital bill didn’t prevent them from taking care of me. It just left me with a bill that I worked and paid for in reasonable monthly payments for a long time. The current system worked for me. If we were socialists indirectly YOU (and others in society) would have been forced to pay for my hospital bill. I would have benefited from this but it’s just not right to make my problems the responsibility of others to take care of. If you think it’s right for others to take care of your problems/responsibility without being fairly compensated for it, then I’m curious what kind of world you really want to live in?

Do you remember this? Almost exactly sixty years ago since Russia’s Khrushchev delivered his message to the UN; prediction for America. TV coverage of him banging his shoe on the podium. At that time, the word communism’ was feared throughout our nation. Do you remember September 29, 1959? Now here is some food for thought if it does not make us choke! THIS WAS HIS ENTIRE QUOTE: "Your children's children will live under communism, You Americans are so gullible. No, you won't accept communism outright; but we will keep feeding you small doses of socialism until you will finally wake up and find you already have Communism. We will not have to fight you; We will so weaken your economy, until you will fall like overripe fruit into our hands." "The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not." Remember, socialism leads to Communism. So, how do you create a Socialistic State? There are 8 levels of control; read the following recipe. 1) Healthcare - Control healthcare and you control the people 2) Poverty - Increase the poverty level as high as possible, poor people are easier to control and will not fight back if you are providing everything for them. 3) Debt - Increase the debt to an unsustainable level. That way you are able to increase taxes, and this will produce more poverty. 4) Gun Control - Remove the ability to defend themselves from the Government That way you are able to create a police state. 5) Welfare - Take control of every aspect (food, housing, income) of their lives because that will make them fully dependent on the government. 6) Education - Take control of what people read and listen to and take control of what children learn in school. 7) Religion - Remove the belief in God from the Government and schools because the people need to believe in ONLY the government knowing what is best for the people. 8) Class Warfare - Divide the people into the wealthy and the poor. Eliminate the middle class. This will cause more discontent and it will be easier to tax the wealthy with the support of the poor Sounds just like today's Democrat agenda!!!!

hokeypokeyalso1 I’m sorry, but what you just said is not accurate at all. Today’s Democrat’s agenda is to make America more like Scandinavian countries, not socialist. Bernie Sanders and the other left-wing representatives are more like centrist politicians by Scandinavian standards (except for Warrens’s proposal to end private healthcare, nobody wants that in Scandinavia or the complete student loan forgiveness by Bernie. Finland has a 40% forgiveness rate if graduated on time) Free education leads to a more educated, cultured society (as we can see in Finland, Sweden, Norway, Germany etc.) and free health care makes sure people don’t have to go bankrupt while facing an unexpected life event. In a countries like that, social mobility is also the highest in the world which represents the actual American dream, which is not as plausible here in the US anymore. Democrats by their policies have been much more successful endorsing middle class unlike the unsuccessful recent Republican leaders, (and Ronald Reagan for example with later proved wrong trickle-down-economics) which have stagnated the growth of salaries and shrunk the middle class of the US. Also I’d like to point out that there were multiple problems with the claims in the video that Scandinavian people just work harder. The main reason for Scandinavian success here in the US is the quality free education back home and healthier life style which give a huge advantage for job markets here in the US due to the decline in public education here. Also, none of the Scandinavian countries are police states, and have less gun violence than the US (surprise surprise) due to the stricter gun laws. In addition, Scandinavian countries are the least religious in the world and are doing better without it. Since the government is well-organized and people trust their government, there’s no problem with the stronger government. I’d like to point out that I’m a non-partisan, I just like to stay in facts.

A video that only cites one primary source and asks loaded questions. Ah, a John Stossel classic move since the late 90's, the man hasn't actually accomplished real journalism since the 80's. He's still an ardent supporter of many disparaging campaigns such as the repeal of outlawing smoking in public areas and in doors, fracking, and of course climate change in general. But of course, keep believing only what you want to see. I'm commenting on this very video because I CHOSE to watch and search both sides.

@@niklasmolen4753 NO. That is BULLCHIT. There is less than an Leaflet's bit of difference between Communism and Nazism. The ONLY THING that Nazism is to the Right of is Communism. It is to the LEFT of EVERYTHING ELSE. AUTHORITARIANISM IS LEFTISM!!! It has NO PLACE on the RIGHT. - Socialists and Communists use the SAME BS rhetoric to try to PRETEND that whatever has been done in the PAST was not REALLY Socialism. They act the same way that CULTS behave when the End of the World does not happen when they say it did. Maybe that is why it NEVER WORKS. If that last time wasn't REALLY Socialism then what can be LEARNED from that FAILURE. Write it off and move on LIKE A CULT would do and just KEEP FAILING. - The RIGHT is about Personal Accountability, Freedom and Liberty and it ENDURES despite allowing Leftists to LIVE and FLOURISH in a Country they HATE and are actively trying to DESTROY. Have a Right Wing Viewpoint in a Leftist Country and you be either Murdered, Executed or Imprisoned in whatever they call their Gulag (where you will most likely by Murdered, Executed or left to ROT).

USA have a great checks and balances system, federal vs state system, plus you Americans are generally more liberty-loving than world's population in average. So why would you be affraid if Sanders or even somebody who is a real communist is in power? Why are you affraid of Western Europe's type of public healthcare, if chance that public healthcare could lead to tyranny is very, very small, practicall non-existent? If I would choose any country in the world for socialists to take over, it's USA, because only absolute power corrupts, that's true for socialists and non-socialists, but there cannot be absolute power in USA. Person in power can't get away with any serious crime in USA, because of it's system.

I have to say, one reason people started calling policies similar to those in Scandinavia "socialist" is because that was the mantra from the right. They'd try to demonize any and all liberal policies by calling them socialist, and I think this led to many people saying "ok, then I want socialism." And now it's helped open the door to true socialistic thinking in America. Just goes to show that dishonest hyperbole is something to be avoided always.
