The Catskill 9, aka the Neversink 9, is a Hike in the Catskill Mountains Covering Nine Catskills High Peaks! This hike covers Table Mountain, Peekamoose Mountain, Lone Mountain, Rocky Mountain, Balsam Cap, Friday Mountain, Cornell Mountain, Wittenberg Mountain and Slide Mountain! The Crazy Part of this hike is that you have to bushwhack From Table Mountain all the way to Cornell! Its about 8 miles straight of Bushwhacking, and for the most part, the real kind of bushwhacking. No herd path at all! To make things Interesting we had heard about a WWII B25 Bomber Plane that had crashed into the side of Friday mountain in 1948 in a Ravine so with having no idea of the terrain and the path that I specifically mapped out going straight down we decided to give it a try! Just gunna send it!! The terrain is treacherous with headwalls 50-100 feet tall and with boulders covered in moss leaving spruce traps all over the place. We descended 700 feet in a matter of .2 Mile and found the Plane! This was a real true bushwhack, a route that I have never heard of anyone doing so this was such an epic accomplishment for the day! Hope you enjoy this Vlog!

Tips for people just getting into hiking:
Don’t do this hike if you are a beginner! Seriously
LNT - leave no trace. Meaning if you carry it in then carry it out and if you do see trash on trail try to carry it out as well to help keep these mountains beautiful and clean.
Do The Rock Hop - The Alpine vegetation is very rare and very fragile so when you’re on the summit of these mountains please only walk on bare rocks to avoid killing the vegetation!

You guys did the plane crash the hard way. The way you showed on the GPS screen "that most people go" is a lot easier. (But maybe that's the old man talking - you guys look to be half my age. I was 65 when I finished the 3500s.)

Yea it’s such an amazing hike! I did it last week again because I’m working on my Catskill grid. It’s my fifth time now. You’ll have a great time. My recommendation is starting early and starting on Pekamoose and table. You wanna get the Bushwaking section out of the day early this way if it takes a long time you have marked trails for the end of your day. Every time I do it he gets easier as I learn the line

@@BrianHikesAllDay It was hard, but worth it! We wanted a 2 night backpacking trip, so we broke it up that way - stayed at the top of Table night 1, and between Cornell and Slide night 2. With a late start day 1, that was the perfect way to break it up for us. The insects were not bad at all, fortunately. But the extra weight/bulk really made the bushwhack section even harder than it would be anyway - I can see why people do this one as a long day. Lone really gives you a false hope that the bushwhack is gonna be easy, but it sure isn't once you get to the thicket on Balsam and Friday, that's one of the toughest stretches I've ever hiked. Don't mind the climbs much, but that pine brush is something else. Not sure if it would have been better if we watched our GPS constantly, but we couldn't afford that much battery use, so we got off the supposed "trail" quite a bit and spent a lot of time putting our heads down and trying to walk a straight line and just crashing through. The views were magnificent though. And it sure felt like an accomplishment doing 9 peaks in a stretch. And we were blessed with perfect weather and no bothersome insects. Your video was super helpful in the planning, thanks so much for putting it up!

You have no idea how happy I am that you decided to watch this specific blog. The cat skills don’t really have a big support team by the hiking enthusiast. I feel like many people are just drawn to the Adirondacks or the White Mountains in the Catskills get overlooked because of their lack of views and height. This hike was absolutely breathtaking and I thoroughly enjoyed videoing and documenting it for everyone and it never really got seen.. So I’m really glad that you watched it

@@BrianHikesAllDay I live in NJ, so the Catskills are too close NOT to take advantage of. I've focused most of my backpacking efforts on the AT (hence my user name), but videos like this make me want to abandon my AT hike endeavors and focus on some AMAZING (local-ish) trails. I'm recuperation from ankle surgery (from hiking! LOL) and I'm super glad I found your channel. I shared one of your other vids (Huntington Trail) on an AT section hikers group. Getting some rave reviews on there! I was thinking about another 150-200 on the AT this coming summer (provided my ankle is up to it), but I'm switching gears to explore the Catskills! I'll save the Whites for the following summer. And I gotta say, GREAT job with your videos! I know it's difficult to catch the perspective of the steepness, but you did an excellent job of it. Really looking forward to watching your other videos!

I was definitely pounding down the electrolytes all day. The one thing that I didn’t do for the first time ever was put liquid IV energy Multiplier in my fluids which I normally always do. The slow steady drinking of caffeine throughout the day always keeps me perky. I definitely noticed the lack of caffeine on this one

The Catkills look really beautiful! Bushwackalackin 🤣😭 Only hike I've done so far in the Catskills is Rip's Rock from Winter Clove Inn near Cairo. You can find it on All Trails. Not an official trail head but the views are beautiful from the cliffs at the top and it's not very trafficked at all. I was the only one on the trail. Once the blueberry bushes start blooming, you'll probably see some black bears. Easier than what you guys normally hike and only about 5.5 miles round trip, but I think it's worth it if you're in the area.

Wow, very impressive to do this in one day! And I know you just did it again yesterday, in the winter! I'm guessing the winter might be more enjoyable because no flies? Which did you prefer? I have done all of this (minus the B25 crash) but in two separate hikes, so I know the terrain and how hard it is. YOU TWO ROCKED THIS. Hats off to you both. I did the Slide/Cornell/Wittenburg route just a few days ago as well in the snow and ice, and although it was very slippery in spots, it was quite fun.

Maybe it's me. But I have climbed down the Cornell crack many times. I know it was a little moist but you guys went down the south side of Saddleback in the winter. I would consider the later much nastier. Anyway with the crack just get your feet in there solid and go down backwards. CAT35er 979 (winter 35er) and ADK46er 5203.

@@BrianHikesAllDay - Understandable. You did mention that. Changing subjects you guys really move. The most uphill I have done in a day is about 5300 ft. Done over 5000 feet about 6 times. But not on a bushwhack or in the winter. I think you did over 7000 ft uphill in one vlog. Just be careful about the butt sliding in the winter.

Well bushwhacking down the side of the mountain to see the plane and coming back up definitely added to the unnecessary.. but even with that probably hour and a half detour we still finished in about 12 1/2 hours. I did my winter round in 11 hours as well with a friend.
