Water hammer has the potential to rupture valves, pipes, and fittings. Condensate can collect on the bottom of steam lines, out of the flow path, so it requires some external means, like gravity for instance, to move it through the system. While damage is most often caused by repeated occurrences of water hammer, sometimes damage can be immediate and catastrophic, and sometimes harmful to employee safety.
Armstrong International has released an updated interactive 30 minutes course on Water Hammer. The course objectives are: --Understand basic mechanics of water hammer --Identify conditions under which water hammer may occur --Apply preventative solutions for water hammer
Check it out here: store.armstronginternational.c... Use this code to get the course for free! hammer

Excellent video! Honestly learned a lot and the it was very clear. I'm not involved in the industry or anything like that just find it interesting. One video I was learning about cavitation in the pump and now 'water hammer'. I had no idea about this before.

Nice video! I think my problem is the last one? Since hammering occurs when the building's central heating begins warming up and you can hear a liquid begin flowing within these vertical pipes that are in each room of my apartment as they soon become SCOLDING hot! Typically will get 3-6 "Bangs" that are surprisingly loud and makes me wonder how the energy to create that much noise can arise within such a small diameter because it really sounds as loud as a small child banging the pipe with a hammer!

I have hammer arrestor but still hammers. Was sized n installed by plumber. After 3 tests ( turn on washing machine n turning it off..) the hammer begins again. Occured after repiping the whole house and now water line now comes down from ceiling height to washing machine lines. Does that cause water to add to the speed/pressure ? Can you suggest a configuration of how arrestor should be installed for this situation? Rt now it's installed rt. b4 attaching washing machine lines.

From the comments you can tell alot of people don't deal with water on its extreme conditions and or steam on a daily basis and it's extreme hazards. But I bet if something happened to one of em because the people maintaining the equipment felt like these people commenting then they would be quick to point the finger and it would be such a tragedy, but yet it's not that important right? Lol. I liked the video did you see that water slug. Before I starter my place in 2002 a guy was killed by water hammer so it's no joke if you know what your talking about. Thanks for the video anyways.

... I can't believe I just watched this entire thing. heh. Is there a rough guideline on what the proper "closing speed" would be for a manual valve? I'm sure it's not just a matter of "as slow as you can" vs "as fast as you can".

It's great except with all the electric valves on water lines now that quickly turn on and off. Washing machines, ice makers, fridges. And because most faucets are quarter turn or less now most people just quickly shut them off. 👍

I had 3 really noisy, banging radiators. The boiler manual told me that one radiator somewhere in the system should not have a thermostat and should be open at all times - my one is in the bathroom - I turned it almost completely off to save on heating bills when we first moved in. It has a tap which can turn off water flow, instead of having a thermostat. I opened the tap to allow hot water into the radiator - hey presto, no more banging.
