CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Carl (Vincent D'Onofrio) asks Catherine (Jennifer Lopez) to euthanize him to protect him from his darker side.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In this science fiction thriller, child psychiatrist Catherine Deane (Jennifer Lopez) has developed a technique that allows her to travel through the minds of her patients. When Stargher (Vincent D'Onofrio), a multiple murderer who methodically drowns his victims and performs bizarre rituals with their bodies, falls into a coma, FBI agent Peter Novak (Vince Vaughn) asks Deane to enter the killer's psyche, in the hope of finding a missing girl whom Stargher has kidnapped; if she's not soon found, in all likelihood she'll die in his torture cell. However, once Deane enters the bizarre world of Stargher's mind, she finds getting out to be a very difficult matter. The Cell was the first feature from director Tarsem, who previously made award-winning commercials and music videos, including the video for R.E.M.'s "Losing My Religion." The supporting cast includes Catherine Sutherland, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Dylan Baker, and Pruitt Taylor Vince.

This movie is the best explanation of what having mental illness is like. Even though you’re innocent at your core, the damage is done, and the demons that entered through wounds and pain you’ve experienced in life will always resurface and take front stage.

When I think about it those last scenes have very deep meaning. Even though his consciousness was of an innocent child there was still no possible way to seperate him from the twisted and perverted serial killer. It's like trying to repair a broken mirror. It will never be whole again. Shows what kind of damage people can do to others. Sometimes the damage is so severe that you can never return from the demons that torment you inside your soul because they become a part of your self.

But how could his Father be so cruel? I know that in real life, there are Fathers who are truly this cruel. How could they? It boggles the mind. How can someone treat a little Boy or Girl in that way? You can explain it but I still cannot understand.

It actually is possible to regain sanity and to reconnect back to the innocent child you once were. God did that with me years ago. It requires a relationship with God through Jesus Christ. I was able, through a lot of work and therapy and journaling and MUCH pain and grieving, to reconnect back to who I was as a 4 year old before I began to go in a different, unhealthy direction. That's why this movie fascinates me because it actually explores this theme. Unfortunately it didn't work for Carl and I'm sure it doesn't work for many, if not most.

This is the sad truth for us borderliners and others who have an internalized malicious instance that is not integrated in our personality. We cannot eliminate it and it is maybe a life long struggle to integrate it, and maybe we never succeed at all. It always finds us and makes life a living hell. There are no continuous extended periods of peace of mind - the moment I think everything may take a turn for the better and I made substantial progress, it appears again like the dreadful emperor in this clip.

I had a boyfriend in my early twenties who had borderline personality disorder. I didn't know it at the time but when I coincidentally read a small article about it, that listed the symptoms, it was like check, check, check. I found it very interesting and I was saddened I didn't know it when I was with him because I would have ended the relationship sooner, seeing that there was no way to help him and by staying I would essentially harm me and him as well. But I can say, without a shadow of a doubt it is hell for the people that are in the affected person's life. I am not being deliberately cruel here, just honest. Au contraire when I found out what it was I stopped thinking so ill for him. I understood that his parents had a huge negative impact on his life by not second-guessing the reason their child behaved in such a diverging from normal manner. Parents have the responsibility to always second guess weird behaviors and activate themselves to find the answer to what causes it and how they can help the child. They should not just settle on "My child is a brat." What does "a brat" even mean??

This comment hits me on so many levels. With severe anxiety and depressions leading often to thoughts of suicide I can relate to the part where it's integrated in your personality. It really is like you say. One moment you think everything is well and then it hits you again. It's something other people often do not understand.

@@Evute02 Agreed it has to be so artificial because they stepped into an artificial symbol stemming from Catholicism. The virgin Mary is not a a real human, she is a completely artificial symbol of the divine vriginal allforgiving mother with no needs of her own. o woman ever existed like that, so this is show by keeping the artificial borders that these catholic depictions always have. I think they work extemely well for the visual symbolic purpose.
