The Boston Celtics have the hottest defense in the league since the new year, and part of the reason why is Robert Williams III, aka the Timelord. In this segment from the Thinking Basketball podcast, Ben and Cody discuss how coach Ime Udoka has changed Rob's' role in the last few months, and how that's unlocked his incredible shot-blocking and boosted the Celtics defense.

@@jeofffrancisjayme7145 what do you mean his old style videos? You mean his film breakdowns? I mean he still puts those out, they take a ton of work though and using NBA film for that much of your video idk if he even gets to fully monetize it. He’s never gonna be able to put out a million breakdowns. But he can continue to put his breakdowns out, continue to do his podcast, (which is amazing, should listen if you don’t) and this is a way for him to put out more content with a little less work. Even if he continues his breakdowns at normal pace, (which isn’t that often) this way he can put out video clips of his podcast and incorporate some film. Which is cool. I’m sure he’s hard at work coming up with more breakdowns, more series, stuff like that. But he also surely wants to put out more content and promote his podcast. This is a win/win for everyone.

@@antonfagersten5719 it’s kinda confusing. I guess he thinks the greatest peaks series (ironically) was his greatest peak of specific content. That doesn’t mean he can’t make his channel better though. If he considers the greatest peaks series the best NBA breakdown content he’s ever seen, maybe Ben can’t top THAT, but by putting out more and consistently amazing content his channel can become better. Maybe that makes more sense idk. I was trying to breakdown his comment 😂

A very underrated aspect nearly noone talks about. This team is extremely young. Outside the 2 veteran bigs, every player is either just starting their prime, or isnt even there yet. We were very fortunate to get Rob. He was projected as a lottery pick but due to injury concerns he fell all the way to 27. I remember watching him catch a lob, and I said to myself no way this guy fails in the NBA. Offensively his passing is pretty good for a big and he’s obviously a really good roller. Next for him is to start shooting pick and pops, his shot needs work but isn’t bad

These are these exact reason why I think the Celtics would be a nightmare matchup for the Sixers in the Playoffs. They can do so much on the Defensive end and the Sixers typically don't have more than one of their scorers acting as reliable bucket getters at the same time. Harden makes a difference the Celtics acquiring Derrick White gives them another option to guard him.
@vinsmoketatum8583

This made me go re-watch the Nuggets v. Celtics highlights to see if it fit what you were talking about. That's actually the only Nuggets loss in their last 9 games so it shows how effective the Celtics have been. Williams was often on one of the J. Greens, both of whom had a pretty bad games. When Jokic drew Williams, Jokic was comfortable decoding the switches and finding the open players (he had a triple double by the third quarter), but the Celtics had a couple good runs against Denver's second unit to come away with the win. Notable how tight the Celtics rotation is. In that game they only played 8 players, with 4 starters logging 37+ minutes. Look at any recent close Celtics game and you see this pattern. I think this speaks to how important familiarity and communication is in order to play defense on this level. It does mean that this run of form could be easily derailed by an injury or two, though.

This video should give insight as to why certain tall 'wing' teams aren't really suffering from the lack of a traditional tall center as a rim protector. Because they got guys who make it difficult attacking the perimeter. If you invite the switch, as was noted on the video they will have other tall wings who will make the weakside play at the rim or use their length to challenge the ball handler as they try get at the basket. In case with the C's their communication is very good which makes use of their length and athleticism to track those shots at the rim. For the C's this as sustainable for the regular season as well in the playoffs until they meet certain teams who can break through and force them to adapt.

Great stuff. It's impossible for me to be any kind of objective as a Celtics' fan. I was taking their recent performance with a massive grain of salt because of the competition, but after watching 80% of their starters (no Jaylen) absolutely smother a very good Grizzlies team I got curious. I had a quick look into the starting 5's net rating and defensive rating since they've been on a roll since getting healthy, and it's pretty nuts. They've played 324 minutes together as of 3/4/22 and have a +27 net rating and a 88.8 defensive rating per NBA.com. I scrolled through some other years to see how many teams in the pace and space era matched those numbers in significant playing time (I used 200 minutes as the cutoff). There are no other 5 man lineups that put up those numbers. I couldn't find another sub 90 defensive rating or over +25 net rating example that played over 200 minutes together going back to 2016/17. Their 2022 numbers are even crazier- 11.7 point differential, and a +29.2 net rating and a 88.5 defensive rating for the starters. I won't be surprised when the Celtics fail to maintain those numbers as their schedule gets tougher, but their starters have been pretty impressive.

@michaelahurt
@michaelahurt 2 жыл бұрын
You have to take his advanced stats with a grain of salt. Almost every advanced metric overvalues low usage finishing bigs like him. Motrez, Gobert, Zubac, Enes Kanter. He's a significantly better player than 3 years ago but his advanced stats don't show it. He's cut way down on his fouling and is more disciplined this year than in years past. But part of that is also this role. It really does unlock him by letting him focus on weakside rim protection, where he excels, and less on blitzing -- which he can do but getting him 25 from the rim is a win for the offense -- or drop coverage which requires patience and careful footwork and isn't ideal work for a guy with his playmaking instincts. He wants to attack and make the first move and you can't do that in drop coverage

Most teams do that. Center in paint area ala Gobert. Its just that Towns is a different type of center that's why a 4 will guard him outside. That's why Celtics and Bucks have similarities in defense since Rob and Giannis can roam and having Horford and Portis to defend the pnr.
