"Our company takes great pride in our product lineup." Yes, I have seen your price list and indeed you think quite highly of it. It'd be nice if the manufacturers could get together to change the per-hull way of doing liability insurance was changed to per-fleet or per-year to get costs down so these aircraft could be affordable again. No doubt, the Skylane (and Turbo) are good airplanes. I'll definitely give them credit where credit is due.

It would be even nicer if GA pilots quit making the same stupid mistakes over and over and over again, with tragic results for themselves and their loved ones...forcing up the cost of airplanes for everyone else.

@@williamrmcintosh4343 It ain't just GA. There's a certain company which makes certain aircraft in Renton, Washington which killed 346 people in 2018-2019... And yes, that affected GA rates. I had more than one insurance underwriter tell me this. "Aviation" is one large pool as far as the insurance industry is concerned.

@@grayrabbit2211 Yes but IMHO that company was excessively blamed for those accidents...after the defensive foreigners had their field day on the Max-8, it (quietly) came out that there was more than just a little operational deficiency in the pilots flying the airplanes...but Boeing had real liability ...Manufacturers of GA aircraft have to bake in substantial costs to the price of each unit to cover the inevitable lawsuits. @@williamrmcintosh4343 Not disagreeing at all. Given that the majority of 737Max aircraft flyling at the time were by US carriers by a substantial margin, irregualries should have shown up in the US system first. Irregularities were noted by US pilots but nothing was done by Boeing, FAA, or NTSB to remedy things. I'd also place blame on the FAA's certification process, both for being too onerous at times, which is part of the reason the 737 Max was created in the first place. Even just what's involved with flying and maintaining a GA certified aircraft is nuts. At the same time the FAA certification process didn't pick up on the fatal flaws which allowed the Max to fly and MCAS to exist in its very flawed design.

I used to be a "car guy", and complained how cars haven't really evolved much after ~2000 - just changing bodywork shape a bit here and there, adding bells and whistles - calling it a new model. Zero improvements in areas which would really make a difference such as fuel efficiency, reliability (seems to be going DOWN with some brands), and ease of maintenance (also going DOWN). But, about 3 years ago I became a pilot. And realized that cars have indeed improved DRAMATICALLY - since the 1960s. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about General Aviation :-( Turbo Skylane - let's revive a design from the 90s and call it a new model, yay! Oh the pricetag is updated for 2022, of course.
@williamrmcintosh43432 жыл бұрын
Yes, but the Skylane fits nicely into Cessna's design philosophy of INCREMENTAL improvements of existing models and building a loyal following of the model over the years. Today's 182 is substantially improved and more capable in every respect than was the 1956 model Expensive? Sure, but that's what modern airplanes cost. Gas used to be 18 cents a gallon. 182 on yhe way out? Hardly. The factory runs max shifts and you'll have to wait more than one year here for your new 182.

Great news. Now all we need to see is the Turbo Skylane RG and a Skyhawk RG back in the line up for those people wanting something to train in a complex airplane, and for the few extra knots that tucking up the gear affords. The Turbo Skylane RG is without doubt, short of a pressurized single, one of the best options for someone who wants to take a couple of family members or friends along for a fast trip to out of the way places with a bunch of stuff tucked in the back.

Depends on what you want. As a long distance cruiser going airport to airport the RG's are good, you get an extra 15 knots for the same powerplant. It's weird that Cessna continues using Lycomings in these aircraft when the Continental 550s seem the better choice. I get that Textron owns Lycoming but the IO-540 weighs significantly more for its output, is less efficient, has poorer fuel specifics, a lower TBO and costs almost twice as much as a Continental 550 after the recent price hike. Plus, Continental has had FADEC models out for over a decade now while Lycoming is still running its competing technology, the IE2 in experimental testbeds, one of which ended disastrously. Besides, the 540 crankshaft debacle that led to the 206 recall proves they aren't as bombproof as people think.

what's the difference between the Cessna 182 and 206?

Dwayne Wallace stopped by my desk occasionally. TWO BASIC RULES: NEVER entertain the question-- WHEN WILL CESSNA? NEVER entertain the question-- WHY DID CESSNA?

Exclusion of price means us normal pilots flying the line moving people and parts won’t be able to afford it.

I’d say that’s true for pretty much any certified manufacturer nowadays.

165kts? Wow. I had a 2004 Skylane and I think the wings would fall off at 165. Did the structure change? Aero improvements? I loved it for the work I did at the time. Super reliable and able to get into any airport and random strips with a solid load of equipment in the back. Loved it because my mission fit the plane and it was around $400k at the time for the NAVIII. Either way....the NXi, great speed, solid climb performance - the value is not there with current pricing. That is the direction of the whole industry, not just this model or Cessna in general. I would prefer to get a higher performance used aircraft. About the same total cost between acquisition and refurb - engine, avionics, P&I but I get faster and farther. Since the fundamentals of this model go back many many decades - the 'NEW' part is less interesting. To be interesting again, perhaps a FADEC, single lever, BRS, retract, IO550 twin-turbo, extended fuel tanks.....just random ideas that would make it more interesting to spend $600k on a heavy trainer.
