In your opinion, who makes the best French onion soup?

Chain restaurant worker veteran here. Onion soup in chain restaurants comes frozen in a bag. The only difference between restaurants is type of cheese, type of bread and added flavors/ingredients. Some add sherry, additional onions etc...The soup is not kept warm but rather kept cold in a Cambro. Your soup is then heated in microwave then placed in Salimander to melt cheese. Some skip the preheating which means melted cheese but cold soup. Some don't give Cambro a stir and results in either all broth or all onions as the onions settle to bottom of Cambro. Scratch made onion soup is very time consuming, requires pounds upon pounds of onions and not cost effective to be made in house. Google an onion soup recipe it's tedious, time consuming process.

I've eaten a lot of French Onion soup in my 61 years of life, and I can tell you my favorite restaurant to enjoy it at is the Capital Grille. It's far better than any of the other places mentioned here, which is sad because the closest Capital Grille is 3.5 hours drive away from my house, or an hours long flight. Fortunately for me, I travel alot , so I get it at least once a month. I start off with a salad, then soup, then a nice New York strip with peppercorn sauce. Pure foodgasm.

I've recently switched to Gruyere cheese for any time I want cheese to melt. Melts better, blends better and tastes better. I use Aldi's shredded Swiss - Gruyere mix.

I'm certainly not a french onion connoisseur, but I love FO soup from Applebee's.

The best French onion soup I’ve ever had was at the Silver Saddle in Tucson, Arizona (located right next to the 10 freeway).

I live in a food desert (northern central MD). I often joke that our locals proudly boast of having both McDonald's *AND* Burger King. In truth, we have more than that, but no Flemmings, no Longhorn, no Morton's, no Capital Grille, not even a Shake Shack (much to my chagrin). So the best French Onion soup is definitely at Outback. With melty cheese and a sodium level that causes doctors to faint at the thought, it's the best that I have tried. Now, if I could only find the best vegetable beef soup...

No. The best WAS, the Jolly Ox, I worked there in 1975. Made from scratch daily, real beef stock, sherry, sweet onions, grated parmesan and toasted french bread, I watched it being made and often helped. No one else has come close. A bowl then cost $1.75, considered higher priced then and I could eat free then. No corporate rats on the ladder making more than their worth.

Panera’s is the worst.
